“There were five stones in the beginning. Over the centuries, they were dispersed by wars, sold off by thieves like you.” One of the key components of the Indiana Jones Adventure Series from Hasbro is the inclusion of a ‘build-an-artifact’ within the general release waves allowing collectors to assemble larger diorama pieces for their display. The first of these was The Ark from Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the second is this Skull Temple from The Temple of Doom. The pieces of the Temple are spread across the five figures of Wave 2. The biggest piece, the rear section, is packed with Short Round. Helena Shaw gets the upper part of the skull, Temple Indy the lower jaw, and Dial of Destiny Indy gets the snake to sit on top. The Sankara stones themselves are included with Hypnotized Indy and are a set of six - three normal, and three that are glowing. Assembly is simple enough, but instructions are provided on the inner cardboard tray of each of the Wave 2 figures. The plastic is soft where it needs to be allowing the two halves to be combined and then the lower jaw slotting into position. The snake fits on top with a slot and socket that line up to hold it in place. I had hoped the base of the piece would be open to allow a light source to go inside - but the piece is fully enclosed once assembled save a small gap under the chin. The paintwork is basic with the skull cast in a brown muddy tone with rock-like texture, and then a black dry brush added to bring out some detail. The snake contains a bit more decor with the cream stripe along the body, painted eyes, and mouth - although the fangs which you’d assume should be white are painted the same pink flesh tone as the mouth. Height-wise the Skull reaches just over the waist of a standard 6-inch figure and up to the neck when the snake is placed on top. You can finish your display by adding the Sankara stones to slots on either eye and in the nose where a circular segment is included in the sculpt to hold the stone. I use the word hold loosely as the design purely relies on gravity to hold the stone in place, and getting them in there is tricky - I ended up using a pair of tweezers. The stones are shaped differently, which is impressive in itself, and the sizing needs to be lined up with the smallest stone fitting in the nose. The standard stones have a marbled decor and do include the three lines painted on the largest. The glowing versions are cast in a translucent orange with a bit of a darker wash to dirty them up. With the piece assembled, it does look the part and displays really well alongside Short Round or one of the two Temple Indy’s - but probably needs more figures to give it context as we saw with the Ark of the Covenant and the inclusion of Belloq and Toht. There could certainly have been a bit more consideration around how the stones fit into place, and while I didn’t expect a light-up feature, leaving the base open for a small LED to be installed would have been the icing on the cake. As we mark the end of Season 1 of Ahsoka on Disney Plus, Hasbro have unveiled an intriguing new sub-line of the Star Wars Black series. The new Holocomm collection will feature articulated Black Series figures, cast in translucent blue plastic and packed with a light-up holopuck, allowing you to display each figure as seen in the various Star Wars properties as a hologram. The light-up feature lasts for 30 minutes via a push button and each takes 3 AAA batteries which are not included, The Holocomm series will be released later this Autumn 2023 and kicks off with two figures at launch - The Mandalorian and Bo-Katan Kryze. Three further figures of Han Solo (Original Trilogy) Axe Woves, and Ahsoka Tano, will arrive in the Spring of 2024.. Each of the figures is based on an existing Black Series release and the appropriate accessories and this does mean older figures like Han include pinned joints. The packaging follows the same design principles as the Phase 4 Galaxy Series with a deluxe-sized box and using a consistent blue holographic artwork with a red Aurebesh header on the side. There are also blue holographic hues to the black of the packaging around the box edges. Like the Credit Collection and Carbonized series figures, the Holocomm series is made up of exclusive releases with Mando a shared exclusive at Shop Disney and Hasbro Pulse. Han will be available via the Fan Channel retailers, Axe Woves at Amazon, Bo-Katan at Target, and Ahsoka at Walmart. Where these are US-only retailers the figures will get a Fan CHannel release in the UK and other territories. “Mola Ram! Prepare to meet Kali...IN HELL!” After the first set of Indiana Jones figures from Hasbro focused on Raiders of the Lost Ark, the second wave was themed around The Temple of Doom - albeit with a pair of figures from The Dial of Destiny also included. Indy himself was well represented in the wave, with three of the five figures in total, with the most iconic of those his Temple of Doom appearance. The figure arrives in the plastic-free square box packaging with a base sand colour that transitions lighter further up the box and is overlaid with the red map lines we see during Indy’s travel scenes in the films. With no window, the figure is depicted on the front as a posed image - with the contents confirmed on the rear of the box. The two sides are then turned over to some artwork on the right, and a checklist of the ‘build-an-artificat’ for this wave on the left. Indy is packed inside the packaging in waxy bags slotted into an inner cardboard tray. Like previous figures, this method of packaging doesn’t keep the figure or accessories secured as intended and in the case of Temple of Doom Indy, his sword accessory arrives hideously warped. Indy is a new figure as far as I can see, not utilising any of the Raider's parts - but sharing much of the figure with the Hypnotized Indy from the same wave. The figure has a ripped shirt over a skin-coloured cast torso with the cream of the shirt weathered with a darker yellow to recreate sweat and grime. Round the back of the torso the shirts ripped, recreating the wear and damage Indy takes during his escape. The right arm is fully exposed in a skin tone finish, while the left arm still has the ragged shirt sleeve with the same weathered decor as the rest of the shirt. The trousers are cast in brown with a sculpted rip in the left knee and come complete with further weathering, particularly around the base of each leg where a white dry brush adds further wear and tear. The Harrison Ford head sculpt is new, or at least tweaked from the previous releases, with a partially open mouth and visible teeth - although the sculpt doesn’t quite translate this into either a smile or a grimace either of which would have been more expressive. Face Print technology is applied to the head adding in detail of the eyes, the unshaven look, and some of Indy’s injuries including a bloody lip. The hat, which is the same as the Raiders release, is glued onto the head (it is not removable) and is finished in a similar way to the trousers with wear marks added at the folds and edges. The costume is finalised with Indy’s removable travel bag that is cast in a softer plastic and shaped to fit over his head and one shoulder and hang at his side. It is painted in places with a gold buckle on the strap and gold buttons on the bag itself. Temple of Doom Indy has a decent set of accessories, starting with the handgun that was included with the Raiders release. Technically, for screen accuracy, Indy shouldn’t have this gun at all, but what you get is OK in terms of filling up the holster on the belt. The gun itself is a touch small, and Temple Indy does not have any alternative hands and no trigger finger on his right hand so there are no options for having him wield the gun. We then have two whip pieces cast in a reddish brown plastic that could have perhaps been a bit darker for screen accuracy. The first is the unfurled whip that comes partly coiled and not as we see it on the box. It is a loose fit in either hand but does the job without being anything special. The coiled version is designed to be held or hung on the belt and the Hasbro team has improved the belt strap this time around to be more secure to hold the coiled whip in place. Indy’s final accessory is the sword he uses in the rope bridge scenes. It will likely arrive warped as I’ve mentioned but can be straightened with a bit of hot water. It has a silver blade with a brown handle and will fit in either hand more securely than the other pieces, as though the hands were specifically shaped for this weapon alone. The Temple of Doom Indiana Jones features 20 points of articulation, all pinless and where possible integrated with the body and outfit. We have single joints to the knees and elbows, with ball joint hips and shoulders and further butterfly joints where the shoulders plug into the torso. The head is on a dual joint neck, while the torso includes a ball joint at both the waist and the mid-section. This gives Indy plenty of posing options with any of the accessories, and all the joints are tight and secure and hold posing well. Considering the availability of parts from Raiders, Hasbro have created an almost entirely new figure for their Temple of Doom Indy with a new body and head, and executing it all with a decent level of decor to add weathering, wear, and tear to the overall look. The accessories do a job but could be of a better quality with very soft plastic and warped items. Indy would also benefit from alternative hands to use each accessory appropriately. These minor points aside, fans of The Temple of Doom will be pleased with the final figure and the various options for display - including the use of the Sankara Stones as a further accessory, although these are packed with Hypnotized Indy and part of the build-an-artifact arrangements for this wave. “Okey-Dokey, Dr. Jones! Hold on to your potatoes!” Short Round is the only other character released so far for The Temple of Doom within Hasbro’s Indiana Jones Adventure Series, the other two being two variations of Indy. Short Round is packed in the windowless square box with the Indy travel map design and sandy base colour scheme. The figure is depicted on the front and back with an illustration of the character on one side spine, and a checklist of the included Build-an-Artificact on the other. Inside the box, Short Round is enclosed in the waxy paper bags with the accessories in a second back at the other side of the inner cardboard tray. Short Round is a brand new figure, with Hasbro obviously intending to give us a figure that covers all the definitive looks of the character through his travels with Indy in The Temple of Doom. The figure arrives donned in the first soft goods of the line, Short Round's blue coat as worn in the Shanghai escape scenes and the plane ride and arrival into India. Like most soft goods, the tailoring is out of scale and the look is not quite right and reminiscent of late 90’s action figures with this type of clothing. Under the coat, we have Short Round in his plain brown trousers, buttoned jacket, and white vest seen throughout the rest of the movie. Each part is cast in its base colour and there are no obvious paint apps at all, nor any weathering which we did get on the corresponding Temple of Doom Indy. The likeness to 12-year-old Ke Huy Quan from 1984 is good without being anything special. The paintwork is rudimentary on the facial details reverting almost to hand-painted eyes, eyebrows, and mouth with no features as such that would be enhanced by photo decor. Short Round has two hat options within the set, the first being his iconic New York Giants white baseball cap with blue stripes and peak. This is removable and fits snugly on the figure's head without looking oversized. It can also fit on backwards, but the shaping here is off so it doesn’t look as fitted. We also then get a removable version of Indy’s Fedora. This is sized for Short Round so is actually smaller than the hats on the Indy figures, but is produced in the same way with a rubbery plastic finish and painted central band. Like the baseball cap, this fits snugly on Short Round’s head while also looking too big for him as per the scene in the movie. It also works well as an accessory for more scene-specific displays where you can have Short Round passing Indy his hat after breaking him from his hypnotic spell. Next on the list for Short Round are a dagger and a Voodoo doll, as used in the movie by Maharaja Zalim Singh. The two pieces have basic details and paint apps considering their size and can be held in either hand although in reality, they have no specific link to Short Round other than the fight he has with the other child towards the end of the scenes as they escape from the mines. The final accessory is arguably the best, another flaming torch for the line but very different from that included with Professor Indy from The Last Crusade. It is made up of a brown shaft with darker brown trim and a translucent orange/yellow flame piece. While it can fit into Short Round’s hands, the shaft is quite wide so it will stretch the softer plastic of the hands over time - like many Indy figures to date, alternative hands here would have been preferred but are not included. Articulation is reduced considering Short Round’s stature, and we have a total of 17 points of articulation, These are all pinless as per the rest of the range, and where possible designed into and around the outfit. Short Round poses well enough with the majority of accessories including some more dynamic posing such as running with the help of a display stand. Considering that The Temple of Doom range is currently limited to just three figures and a build-an-artifact, I am grateful that Short Round has made it as a figure in lieu of so many other characters who might have been chosen ahead of him in terms of looks or visual presence and popularity. In reality, once announced Short Round outsold every other figure in the wave if pre-orders were anything to go off validating Hasbro’s decision. The figure we get has plenty of options for display, although the soft goods coat doesn’t really work and will likely go in a 'spares box' for most collectors, with the flaming torch particularly good fun as are the two removable cats. The beauty of the figure is perhaps brought out fully when posed with either of the two Temple of Doom Indy figures, depicting their relationship for the movie in action figure form. The Diamond Select Toys offering at Toy Fair 2023 was by invite only and was very much themed around their extensive statue lines, Minimates, and the Gentle Giant Star Wars offerings. Action Figure collectors can look forward to the next Marvel Select release which was confirmed as Archangel - displayed alongside the new Captain America and Crimson Dynamo. We also have new figures in the Van Damme collection, including Jean Claude in a blue Gi. While Toy Fair was running in New York, the Shanghai Wonder Festival 2023 was also underway in China with Storm Collectibles showing off a number of new products including the new Gear of War figures Queen Myrrah and Dominic Santiago. We also saw new figures of Wanyudo from GetsuFumaDen, Skullomania from Fighting Ex Layer, Jason Cheng and Tyler from Warriors of Future and Morrigan from Darkstalkers. Storm Collectibles have announced two new Gears of War 6-inch scale figures for release in 2024. Up first is Queen Myrrah who features her Torque Bow, Locust Knife, and alternative hadns. She is joined by Corporal Dominic Santiago who will come with a Retro Lancer, Commando Knife, and Snub Pistol as well as alternative hands. Both figures are listed as Q2 releases for 2024, between April and June. Queen Myrrah is the revered leader of the Locust Horde. On Emergence Day, she led the Locust as they burst forth from underground – the beginning of a war to eradicate humanity and claim the surface of Sera. Myrrah, a human, was just a child when she contracted Rustlung but survived the deadly Imulsion-triggered disease. Realizing that her DNA held the secret to developing an Imulsion-mutated biological weapon – the Locust – Dr. Niles Sampson and a cadre of rogue Coalition of Ordered Governments scientists kidnapped Myrrah conducted their illegal experiments at a secret facility beneath Mount Kadar. Myrrah eventually led the Locust test subjects in an uprising against their captors, killing all and escaping into the underground network of tunnels where they would grow in strength and numbers. “Dr. Jones! Don't drink it! It's bad! Spit it out!” The second full wave of Indiana Jones Adventure Series figures from Hasbro, released in late Summer 2023, was themed around The Temple of Doom with three figures from that movie as well as a Sankara Stone Skull idol build-an-artifact packed in alongside Indy and Helena from The Dial of Destiny. The wave featured two Indiana Jones figures from Temple of Doom, the first of which being the Hypnotized Indy. The figure arrives in the established Adventure Series box with the box art including a desert-themed colour scheme with the red lines of the Indy travel map laid out as part of the design. The boxes are windowless, with the figure depicted on the front and back and a checklist of the rest of the wave to one side. The rear of the box also confirms the contents and accessories, while the final side contains artwork for the figure. Hypnotized Indy utilises many of the parts we see on the Temple of Doom Indy from the same wave. The bare-chested upper torso is shared between the two, with the Temple Indy applying a rubberised shirt over the top. The right arm is shared, while the left is currently specific to this release. The lower legs are also a shared piece although the left thigh segment on the Hypnotized Indy doesnt include the rip at the knee. Each segment of the body is cast in the base colour plastic with the only significant paint applied on Indy’s belt. The head sculpt looks new, or tweaked from another release, as he appears without his hat but with a more matted hairstyle that is not the same as that used on Professor Indy or Club Obi-Wan. The likeness to Harrison Ford is on par with the others in the line, enhanced by photo-print decor that also includes the red markings on his forehead. Again, the finish is glossy and waxy. Articulation is 19 points in total, all pinless, but the lack of clothing on the upper body does mean the joints are more visible than we might usually see. This is particularly evident with the butterfly shoulders and the neck joint which has a relatively large gap where it meets Indy’s chest. The joints all do what they should, and while there is a bit of a faff getting the shoes to sit flat, once that pose is found Indy stands perfectly well on his own. The figure comes with the red rope sash he wears during the ceremony and this can be removed if you wish. We also get Indy’s satchel and for the first time in the range, this can now be opened with an opening top flap and a space inside the bag for what we assume is the Sankara Stones which are also included in this set (although these are also a part of the build-an-artifact). The reality is that the bag is too small and just one Sankara stone proves problematic to get it into the bag. The other pieces in the set include the Chalice of Kali, from which Indy is forced to drink the blood. This is another neat archeological artifact slotted into the line and features a gold lower section, onto which a painted skull is added - with the spout of the Chalice protruding through the skull’s mouth. Despite the size and the fact it is an accessory, the paint detail on the skull is extensive including painted red eyes. Indy can also arm himself with the included spear, a nearly 7-inch piece with a wood effect shaft and a black-painted upper hook section. While the accessories are great, the hands selected for the figure are taken from other figures so while holding the spear isn't an issue, Indy isn’t equipped with a grip to hold the Chalice in any way shape, or form that would be stable enough for display. The Hypnotized Indy figure as a release ticks plenty of boxes giving us another scene-specific Indy with some good accessories and an overall design and execution that has just a handful of flaws. The key issue with the figure is the Indy overload we are now seeing within the line - especially when we are just at Wave 2 and have already had 9 Indy figures and a 10th on the way. There are even three Indy’s in this five-figure line and the key issue with that is the characters we are missing out on. I am aware there are sensitivities with some of the Temple of Doom characters, but a Willie Scott would have been a good choice if Mola Ram or any of the Thugee Guards were off the table. Hypnotized Indy would have perhaps been best served as a stand-alone retailer exclusive like Professor Indy or Club Obi-Wan Indy, allowing collectors to make a choice whether to pick him up without needing to in order to complete the Sankara Stones Skull Temple. The Super7 Ultimates were out in force at New York Toy Fair 2023 with previously announced and new figures across lines such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, and Silverhawks. Highlights included Ratar-O, Mongor, Snarf, and Willa from Thundercats. As well as new Turtle releases including Punk Rock Donatello, Robotic Rocksteady, Zak the Neutrino, Wingnut and Screwnut, Scumbug, and a new Splinter with flocked fur.
