We enjoyed a great day out today at Echo Base Live down in Redditch. While it was quite a distance to travel, the sheer volume of Star Wars products in one location was overwhelming and I was very much reliving my youth looking at all the Vintage goodies. I saw a Rocket Firing Boba Fett, showed my son the Palitoy Death Star playset I'd had as a child, checked out MDC Customs who have supplied a number of my custom projects to date, and Action Plastics from whom I've bought lots of stands. Great to also see In Demand Toys at the event as well as all the other traders. I am unfortunately sitting here having some non-buyer regret as procrastinated over a few purchases and ended up leaving all of them in Redditch, although my son is very pleased with his first Black Series figure, Grand Admiral Thrawn. The day was however more about the experience and I did leave with plenty of great memories and pictures of the event and some of my favourite stalls and items. The McFarlane DC Multiverse Gold Label Green Lantern from DC vs. Vampires was previewed back in August. The figure has now been fully revealed as part of Walmart's previews for their Collector Con Event. The figure is a US exclusive to Walmart, while UK retailers are taking preorders for the figure which will be a wider release over here through the UK distributor. “You already... have, Luke. You were right. You were right about me. Tell your sister... you were right.” The Star Wars Black Series 40th Anniversary series of figures is now six years old, launching in 2017 to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of A New Hope. We have now reached, unbelievably, the 40th Anniversary of Return of the Jedi and have had three full waves of figures to celebrate. The latest wave, released in the late Summer of 2023, features a mix of repacked figures like the Emperors Royal Guard, and new - or at least significantly updated - releases like the ROTJ Darth Vader we are reviewing here. The latest release of Darth Vader arrives on the Kenner-inspired backing card mimicking the original 1983 releases in design and the artwork used to illustrate the figure. It features the familiar tramline design as well as the original Return of the Jedi logo we saw lining store shelves back in the 80s. The only additions to the front of this replica is a 40th Anniversary logo at the top left and a few modern copyright and safety notifications. The rear of the card also plays on the nostalgia with a checklist of other figures in the line, all in their own individual coloured box. The use of these blister cards is certainly aimed predominantly at carded collectors - once opened there is no repacking of the figure as we might do with the standard Black Series releases. In hand, Darth Vader uses the long-established Vader body dating back originally to 2014 and the earliest releases in the line. Over time this has been tweaked and improved, and the latest version is accurate to his Return of the Jedi appearance including the coloured painted controls on the chest box and the panels on his belt. The body is sculpted with the ribbed suit, and cast in black. Over this are armoured pieces like the gloves and groin, with a very high gloss black finish on the boots. The shoulder piece has changed a few times over the life of this Vader figure this latest version is cast in gloss black with painted silver panels and straddles the front and back of the figure securing the soft goods in place as opposed to the original versions that used a metal chain. The soft goods are in two parts with an inner section running down either side of the chest from the shoulder armour, under the belt, and out to create a skirt section. Over this then sits the extensive outer cloak. Both materials work well, being soft enough to sit on the figure naturally and flow down and around Vader. The head is a new sculpt, improving substantially on the original ROTJ Vader with a removable helmet. The likeness to Sebastian Shaw as Anakin in those final scenes is impressive and the power of the photo-real decor really shines when there is so many features on a face that can be picked out and enhanced including the eyes, but also the red scarred tissue on the face and across the head. The head is positioned inside the mouth section of Vader’s helmet as it was in the scenes when Luke took off the helmet. The head is articulated within the mask piece allowing the ability to pose the head at a different orientation to the helmet base, while the helmet is also articulated and can move itself taking the head with it as it goes. Hasbro has designed two removable parts to attach to the head, following the same principles we see in the movie with a black gloss cast surround and a face mask piece. The face mask goes on first connecting into the base and over the head. The final surround has a circular insert inside that should line up with the circle on top of the face plate. In reality, the fit is not overly crisp or tight. There is no satisfying click or locking position, with the whole helmet relying on gravity and the molded shape to hold it in place. On our review version, a fit was possible, but quite often the helmet would split apart over time. That being said the beauty of this figure is the Anakin head sculpt, making the helmet pieces more of an accessory for Vader (or even Luke) to hold. There are other ROTJ Vaders out there with a fixed helmet that will satisfy other scenes - with more on the way via the Archive Series re-releases. In order to replicate the battle in the Emperor's Throne Room, the figure features an interchangeable right hand. It arrives with a stump at the wrist after the hand has been cut off. This can, if you wish, be exchanged with a full normal gloves hand to hold Vader’s lightsaber. The final accessory is Vader’s lightsaber - another reused piece cast in black with silver detailing and an included hook at one end that allows the saber hilt to hang on a hook on Vader’s belt. The usual translucent saber blade is included, in the required red for Vader, and with a secure peg that clips into the saber hilt as needed. Articulation is very much driven by the older body design but does have 20 points of articulation in total including the older, but more wide-ranging double-jointed pinned knees. The dual articulation in the neck adds an additional joint we haven't seen before as does a wrist rotation where the alternative right hand can be swapped. There are also butterfly joints at the shoulders, something that wasn't originally included but has been enhanced through the various Vaders over the lifespan of the Black Series. The figure does still have the loose hip issue that has also plagued every Vader to date and while he can stand perfectly well, the hips have a tendency to slide out to the side too easily. In summary, this is the definitive Return of the Jedi final scenes Darth Vader, being very much focused on a display item without the helmet showing off that wonderful Sebastian Shaw head sculpt in all its glory. The figure does contain sufficient parts for a standard ROTJ Vader with the two-part helmet and right hand, but the helmet is not quite there in terms of fit and looks. The retro card is very nostalgic and aimed particularly at in-package collectors, with the figure almost guaranteed a general release in the coming months in one guise or another. “And I'm Just Lucky That The Chaos I Emerged Into Gave Me All This, My Own Glorious Purpose." Following Loki’s first season on Disney+, the Marvel Legends team gave us a TVA Loki from the series as part of their first Disney+ wave of figures in 2021. The figure would, ironically, go on to have a variant release in 2022 packed with the 1:1 replica Tesseract light-up piece that had previously seen packed alongside a Red Skull figure in a 2018 SDCC Exclusive pack. This new Loki set is a boxed release, without any windows in the packaging, utilising product images to showcase the set. The Tesseract gets the biggest billing on the box, with just a small insert illustration of the new Loki 6-inch figure to one side. Inside the box, we find the two items secured into an inner cardboard tray with a short set of instructions for the Tesseract, and Loki and his accessories are further protected inside a waxy paper bag. Starting with the Tesseract, which is obviously intended to be the star of the set this arrives inside a clear plastic case, wrapped in the same waxy paper as the figure. The cube is cast in an uneven surface of irregular patterns, as seen on the actual prop, executed in translucent blue plastic that has darker edges to the patterns and lighter inner sections. The cube can be opened by way of a slightly odd split between the two halves, that is instigated through a small lip on one side edge to provide you with adequate grip. Inside the cube is the inner light-up workings in a circular block into which you will insert three AAA batteries. Once powered the inner section slots back into the cube and the motion of the inner gubbins within the cube then activates the light. The overall effect is OK, but not spectacular and the lack of any stand or display consideration for the item in the set makes it feel a bit lacklustre. For me, the set was picked up purely for the Loki figure which is based on his look towards the end of the Loki series after losing his TVA jacket and heading off to the Void to face whatever is controlling the TVA. The figure utilises the trousers and torso from the original Disney+ Loki, with these items themselves originating with the Nick Fury figure from Captain Marvel. To update Loki’s look, we have new arm sections from the bicep joint downward creating the rolled-up sleeve look. Loki is wearing a vest harness with a rear holster for his sword, and an updated left hand. Each part is cast in its base colour, with added detailing limited to the belt and buckle and Loki’s tie. The head is also new depicting Tom Hiddlestone’s look in the show with the added realism of the photo-real decor on the eyes in particular. The hair, which was sculpted blowing to the side on the original figure, is more neutral on this figure coloured in black and slicked back from the head as is Loki’s look. Articulation is a mix of pinned joints on the legs, and pinless on the arms with 19 points of articulation in total. The usual issue lingers with the suited legs in getting the shoes to a flat balanced position to pose Loki standing upright. This aside, the joints all work well enough but the lack of a shoulder butterfly joint, and limited bend in the elbow is evident when you bring the sword accessory into play as Loki can’t quite move his arm enough to be shown drawing it from its holster, or holding it in two hands. The older format neck also carries that visible pivot joint under the chin which does draw the eye a little. Loki’s sword is another new item cast in gold plastic with a painted handle, and a dark colour added to the blade to add weathering and to create a panel-beaten look. The sword is straight on arrival and in a robust feeling plastic that slots into the right hand of the figure, or snugly into the holster on Loki’s back. A second accessory creates the flaming look for the sword, utilising the established magic effect design of a soft translucent plastic moulded in the shape of the sword while retaining the flexibility to wrap around it and hold itself in position. The finish is great, and for those that like these effect designs it is as good as any of the others we have had so far like Thor’s lightning and Scarlet Witch’s magic. This is a very solid Loki figure, but packed away with a roleplay item that won't be to everyone's taste and with an initial RRP which was quite restrictive to those who just wanted the figure. Thankfully (I guess) the item has come down in price considerably to selected clearance prices lower than a standard figure which does indicate how this set has been received within the collector market. The Tesseract will go on my shelf as a curio item, while Loki is the part of the set that I wanted in particular and I am pleased that as expected this is a big improvement on the original release and also a look that will be carried into Season 2 of the show. With the set focusing on Loki’s relationship to the Tesseract, it is perhaps odd that a 6-inch scaled Tesseract accessory is not included, particularly with the way the left hand of the figure is shaped as though posed to hold the cube. I would imagine that this figure - or one very similar - will get a single release as part of the Loki Season 2 figures, but at the moment this set is at bargain prices at a number of retailers if you want to go and grab it now. The second batch of Character Toys Doctor Who figure sets heading exclusively to B&M stores for 2023 has been revealed. Like the Summer, we have three sets to look forward to starting with the first 3-pack of 2023 with the Deadly Assasin set featuring the Fourth Doctros in his Time Lord Robes and two of the key Time Lords from that serial - Cardinal Borusa and Chancellor Goth. The other two sets are part of the History of the Daleks collection. History of the Daleks Set #15 is taken from Remembrance of the Daleks, and includes a Renegade Dalek Drone and Renegade Dalek Supreme. The History of the Daleks then moves into New Series Doctor Who with a two-pack that is dual numbered as set #16 and #17 and features a Bronze Dalek Drone as seen in the 9th Doctor Story 'Dalek' - specifically featuring a bronze central strip unique to that story. It will be packed alongside a Dalek Sec from the 10th Doctor era first seen in 'Army of Ghosts'. It is worth noting that what looked to be Doctor-specific coloured packaging seen on the Summer releases isn't continued into these releases with all blue packaging design regardless of Doctor. The press release confirms the availability of these soon - but to be confirmed by B&M - so it is most likely late October into November with pricing TBC but likely to remain in line at the £21.99 currently charged in stores. The Deadly Assassin (08019) This figure trio features the Fourth Doctor in Time Lord robes, collar and skull cap, Chancellor Goth in his Prydonian Chancellery robes and the Claret robed Cardinal Borusa, all iconic characters from the third serial of Season 14. This was the only story in the Classic series of Doctor Who to feature the Doctor without a companion and saw the return of the Doctor's nemesis, the Master, but in a heavily decayed state at the end of his original regeneration cycle. The storyline sees the Doctor head to Gallifrey to answer to the Time Lords’ summons. On the way, he is struck by a premonition that he will assassinate the Lord President - a premonition that plays out! The Doctor is quickly apprehended but by claiming a right to stand for President he sends Gallifrey into a constitutional crisis. The full synopsis behind the episode and creation of the set can be enjoyed on the packaging. The History of the Daleks #15 – Remembrance of the Daleks (08020) This next installment for the History of the Daleks series includes a supreme Dalek and a Grey Renegade Dalek, from an episode that first aired in 1988. For Remembrance of the Daleks, the producer and writing team sought to give the Daleks more credibility and menace. The story reveals two factions of Daleks fighting a civil war: the Grey Daleks, or ‘renegades’ led by the black Supreme Dalek and the Imperial Dalek force led by The Emperor ‘Davros’. Humanity is caught in the crossfire as both sides hunt their objective, an ancient Gallifreyan Artifact known as the ‘Hand of Omega’ through London. The History of the Daleks #16/17 – New Series Gold and Black Daleks (08021) Featuring one Time War survivor Dalek and one Black Dalek, these Daleks herald back to the start of the New Series in 2005. During 2004 the props department were challenged with coming up with a new Dalek design for the series. The feeling of those involved was that the Dalek needed updating to a more modern look. In the story ‘Dalek’ one surviving Dalek is kept in an underground bunker, the pet plaything of a multi billionaire who collects alien junk. When it finally regenerates, we find out exactly how deadly one lone Dalek can be. Black Dalek Sec is one of a set of four Daleks to emerge from a Dimension Ship on Earth in the Torchwood research facility. These survivors of the Time War have hidden in the spaces between dimensions awaiting the moment to emerge once more. Upon their arrival, all hell breaks loose as the Daleks and Cybermen rally for an all-out war. Al Dewar, Creative Director at Character Options, said: “This time, we’ve jumped around a little. We’ve delved back into the Classic series to bring the collectors Time Lords, and not just any Time Lords .. these are the Time Lords of old, when they were still a mystery to fans in their second TV appearance. It was a delight to bring the 4th Doctor in his Time Lord robes, the beguiling Chancellor Goth as played by Bernard Horsefall, a true Doctor Who legend, and the Doctor’s old schoolmaster Cardinal Borusa, from the eternally fabulous Deadly Assassin story to the shelves. “Then we skipped over the Resurrection of the Daleks, though we will inevitably cover that one, and went straight to Remembrance to bring fans the iconic Black Dalek Supreme and Grey drone. These have a many updated features and stand out well. You just can’t beat a Remembrance Grey Dalek blasting its way around London! These flat grey ‘chunky’ Classic Daleks were so impressive in their last TV outing. “For Set two we delved into the New Series with the ‘original’ Bronze Dalek from ‘Dalek’, interestingly the only one to feature, the waistband in gold. The colour scheme on this Dalek is slightly different than the later ones with less contrast between the gold and bronze. Adding to the mix is Dalek Sec -the original though not last, Black Dalek Supreme. Ahead of Walmart's Collector Con later this month, the US retailer has begun previewing new items for the event on its website. This has given us a full look at a trio of new Hasbro G.I. Joe Classified figures. We have a Night Force Parth "Wolf Spider" Varma (#109) figure with removable helmet, mask, weapons and backpack. Night Force Tunnel Rat (#107) with night vision goggles, backpack and weaponry. From NECA we have new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle products - some as seen at New York Toy Fair 2023. From the third TMNT live action movie, Turtles in Time, are these two double packs of the Turtles in their Samurai Gear.
