A new two-pack of figures from The Muppets has been listed by Diamond Select Toys for a 2024 release. The set includes Pepe the King Prawn and Uncle Deadly. McFarlane have shared images of a Platinum Edition of their DC Retro Lord Death Man from the Batman 1966 line. The chase variant, packed randomly into cases, will feature a glow-in-the-dark paint job. McFarlane are offering US collectors a chance to enter a EQL draw to be picked to buy this figure directly from the McFarlane Store. Lord Death Man was a mysterious crime boss who could return from the dead. In one gruesome incident, he came back to life mid-autopsy. Lord Death Man also had superhuman strength and stamina, which he used to battle Batman, The Outsiders, and Talon. Hasbro's Marvel Legends HasLab Giant-Man project will not include any additional figures as stretch goals, but Hasbro has confirmed that complementary figures for this 24-inch tall Giant-Man will be worked into the main line. The first of these has been revealed just a few days out from the end of the backing period, very likely intended to boost the backers which still sit some way short of the 10,000 backers needed. The Marvel Legends Janet Van Dyne as the Wasp will be released as part of the Avengers 60th Anniversary series which will continue into 2024. “I'm counting on you to see this through.” Ezra Bridger, as seen in the final season of Rebels translated to a live-action Ezra during the start of the Ahsoka series by way of a holo-recording that Sabine had kept during her time on Lothal. This has been translated into one of the first Star Wars Black Series figures from the Ahsoka Disney+ series, released in Autumn 2023. Ezra Bridger (Lothal) is a general release and part of Wave 13 of the Galaxy Collection Series, a wave turned over entirely to characters from or aligned to the Ahsoka series. The Ahsoka figures have been given another blue shade hue for their artwork and character details, with Ezra number #02 in the line sitting directly after the Ahsoka release and ahead of Sabine, Morgan Elsbeth, and the HK-87 droid. The wave is the first full wave to revert to the window boxes after Hasbro reversed the decision on plastic-free packaging. By some quirk of distribution, it also beat Wave 12 to market. Ezra is a full new figure as you would expect and is modeled specifically on the Ahsoka holo-recording but without (thankfully) Hasbro converting it into a holo-comms figure - that may be to come. Ezra is wearing an orange shirt with dark burgundy painted panel across his stomach area. A yellow armour piece is positioned over the shoulders inlaid with orange trim and also some battle damage with silver-grey scratch marks painted into the front of the piece. The left arm features a gauntlet piece with red and white controls, and Ezra is wearing olive green gloves with orange fingertips. The legs are brown cast plastic with metallic grey armoured shins and brown boots trimmed in yellow. Ezra is sporting a belt that features thigh straps on either side with a holster on the right and a hook for his lightsaber on the left. The head is modeled after actor Eman Esfandi who plays Ezra in Ahsoka and while this look was limited to a small holo-recording, the likeness to the actor before he grows the extensive beard we see Ezra sporting later in the series is strong. There is the usual photo-real decor application for the eyes as well as Ezra’s scar on his left cheek. The hair is a flat black colour neatly combed into a side parting. As is a common issue with the current Black Series release the hair, face, and eyes all still look glossy and sweaty. Ezra comes with his blaster which he utlises in Rebels while sporting this look, but not actually featured during Ahsoka. This is a heavy DL-44, similar to that used by Han Solo, and cast in metallic gunmetal plastic with a silver-painted barrel. Despite this, the weapon has a good level of detail, including a ridged grip and pivots and component parts picked out across the body of the weapon. It is also made in much sturdy plastic than we have seen in other Black Series releases, holding its shape well and not deforming when dropped into Ezra’s right-hand trigger grip. It will also fit into the holster, but this is a tight squeeze. The lightsaber Exra constructs after his first weapon was destroyed by Darth Vader on Malachor is also included. This is the usual combination of a cast hilt with black and silver detail and a translucent green blade that clips into place. The saber hilt will fit into either hand or both if needed, and can be slung via the hook on the belt when not in use. Ezra comes with an entirely pinless body but retains the thigh articulation that we are starting to see phased out on some newer figures. There are 19 points of articulation in total and with no robes, or hefty armour to restrict him Ezra is very extensive in his movement and posing options including with his saber and his blaster - or both. The joints are also worked into the sculpt to aid the look of the figure apart from the neck which does look a bit odd in some cases as the neck tends to turn with the head misaligning the cut of the shirt collar beneath. This is unlikely to be the last Ezra figure we see in the Black Series, and it is a clever release that bridges the gap from Rebels into Ahsoka making it of interest to collectors of both series. While it is badged via the packaging as an Ahsoka release it definitely won't look out of place in a display with the other Rebels figures released to date. There is little to fault with the figure other than a slightly glossy finish to the face and a neck joint that sometimes has a mind of its own. It is also good to see further enhancements within the Black Series such as the now almost standard use of Butterfly joints, and what feels like an improved quality plastic on the accessories - long may these continue. We are getting closer to the full reveal of McFarlane's DC Multiverse wave from the 1997 movie Batman & Robin starring George Clooney. The wave was previewed at SDCC 2023 and shown off at New York Toy Fair and we now know the wave will open for pre-order on the 8th of November 2023. The wave will include figures of Batman, Robin, Batgirl, and Poison Ivy with parts spread across each of the four releases to build a Mr. Freeze figure. "Your screams are like music to my audio-receptors!" The first General Grievous figure was released in 2019 and based on his live-action appearance in Revenge of the Sith. The figure would have an update in 2022 with a lighter colour scheme and updated cloak to recreate Grievous as seen in the Tartakovsky Clone Wars series. The latest iteration of Grievous in the Black Series line is this 2023 Gaming Greats release, tweaking the original figure into a battle-damaged variant as seen in the EA Battlefront 2 video game. Like the first release, Grievous is a Deluxe release warranted by his height and the volume of accessories included to complete his look. He is a Gamestop exclusive in the US and sold via the Fan Channel elsewhere. Grievous arrives in a window box as Hasbro reverses its plastic-free packaging decision. The wider Deluxe box follows the same design principles as the other Galaxy Collection figures with the slanted side and artwork in the blue hue allocated to the Gaming Greats collection. Grievous is number 25 in the series, following on from the Darth Malgus release. Grievous is a full re-use of the original figure from 2019 but with some enhancement as we will see shortly. Hasbro has a good track record of realising droids in figure form, and the General uses the same principles as other robotic figures with a body sculpted to incorporate the joints mechanically into the figure with visible pegs and pivots. The main body of Grievous is cast in black plastic with a hint of a metallic finish. This is then overlaid with cream armoured panels across the chest, groin, arms, and legs. As per the Battlefront 2 graphics and in keeping with the ‘battle damaged’ sub-title for the release, the damage is added via paint decor across Grievous’ chest, arms, and legs. However, the figure has lost decor too with the silver scratches and wear seen on the original figure around the legs and midsection has been lost completely. This damage is also carried into the head and the mask carries a scorched patch over the left eye. These eyes are sculpted beneath the mask and then painted with the red and orange organic hue we see on screen from what is left of Grievous’s organic body. The head is joined up to the main body by a further mechanically designed joint and surrounded with silver-painted hydraulic pipework. The big improvement in my eyes to this new figure is how much more stable he is out of the box and into a standing position. The original Grievous suffered from gummy ankle pivots that did not come back far enough to level out the clawed feet, this appears to have been tweaked on this new release leaving Grievous able to stand fully upright out of the box and with joints secure enough to support his weight and that of any accessories. Like the first figure, the arms arrive in a two-armed configuration but can be split to create the four-armed variation for Grievous. Each pair of arms is held together by interlocking pegs on the hands and from here can be used as a single pair of arms or split into four. Once split, this makes the articulation count a total of 19 points. The slimness of the arms once split only allows for a single elbow joint and shoulder joint and not any wrist movement and that can be a bit more problematic when you employ the General's 'collection'. This release of Grievous does not feature a soft goods cloak, it wasn’t featured in the gameplay either. We do however get the collection of lightsabers Grievous has acquired - four in total all featuring a removable hilt with different detailing on each and four removable translucent blades - two green and two blue. These slot into the hands of Grievous, with some trial and error around which fits best whereas there isn't much play in the small, clawed hands and some of the thicker saber hilts are easier to work with in the lower grips. With no wrist articulation, the position of the sabers can only be orientated via the elbow or shoulder joint, which is frustrating when you are trying to align the position of the blades. The slim arms and the joints connecting them also lead to some posing frustration, with my figure's right upper arm already unable to hold itself fully upright. Grievous works fine as a Gaming Greats release, aligning to the Battlefront 2 source material via the battle damage although the finish is not an improvement on the first release rather replacing one set of weathering with another. The figure does improve significantly on stability and to that end offers an upgrade option to the original figure. The complexity of Grievous and the split arms must be a headache for designers and I am pleased Hasbro has tackled these key elements rather than maybe using alternative arms or leaving them as a two-arm option - the negative in this is the lack of that wrist articulation which would really help the lightsaber posing. The Exclusive box set of Cassian Andor and B2EMO from the Disney+ Andor series was a Summer 2022 Convention release and followed suit with the previous 2-3 years by bringing collectors an upcoming figure in exclusive packaging with an exclusive part included - in this case the B2EMO droid. The packaging uses the Phase 4 closed box format of exclusives established in 2020 with Cad Bane and uses an outer sleeve and inner box - or in this case boxes - that can slide out like drawers. The front sleeve uses a two-tone black design with images of Cassian and B2EMO worked into the design as shadows. This is overlaid by a red-trimmed Black Series logo. At each side is a tray that is shaped and sized exactly to the Galaxy Collection format inclusive of the angled side which contains artwork specific to the figure although it is not part of a wider montage. B2EMO sits to the right-hand side of the box with Cassian to the left. There are no windows to the figures and they are tied into the deep red box interior to keep them secure. The rear of Cassian’s box follows suit with the main line releases with some character details, but B2EMO’s side is left clear. While the box can be saved, you will have to cut or carefully stretch the cable ties to free the figures. This is a new head sculpt for Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor with a longer unkempt hairstyle and a fuller beard. The likeness to Luna is good with photo-real decor applied and adding some realism to the eyes and the beard. The skin tone is glossy and that does detract a little from the overall look. Cassian is presented the outfit we first see him wearing in the Andor series as he heads to Morlana One and this presents a number of different layers on the figure from a brown undershirt, blue outer shirt, green two-tone tunic, and an outer jacket in a gloss burgundy with brown trim that is executed as an outer rubberized plastic sleeve. Other paint decor includes a sculpted belt with painted gold buckles and some darker brown panels on the knees of Cassian’s trousers, and the same colour applied to his boots. All of these painted layers are neat and defined with no obvious issues. Articulation is 19 points in total with Andor picking up the dual joint neckpiece and a pair of butterfly shoulders tucked away under the outer jacket. The joints are all designed to fit around the look of the figure and outfit, and are all pinless. Cassian can be posed in a number of different stances both dynamic and static depending on your display preferences. His sole accessory is the MW-20 Bryar pistol he inherited from his adoptive father Clem Andor. It fits into the right hand specifically where a trigger finger slots into place - it also will just about work in the left which is similar in terms of trigger finger design but not quite snug enough for a tight grip. Like most Black Series weapons of the current era, the gun is a metallic finish plastic and is unpainted in terms of any detail but the sculpt itself is crisp. There is no holster or any way of stowing the blaster under Cassian’s coat when not in use? The Andor family droid, B2EMO is the exclusive element to the set. It is cast in red plastic with pitted wear and tear built into the sculpt. The two sets of drive wheels sit on either side of the main body with the treaded wheels painted in a dark grey - and somewhat messily if you look from underneath. One of the wheel covers is a construction yellow colour as seen on screen and weathering is applied over the top of all the wheeled sections. The droid's main body is made up of a base, two central rings and the upper dome and these can extend outwards to when B2EMO is operating, or be folded back into a compressed mode when it is offline. These panels include some turquoise panels and stripes which are applied to look worn and scratched. There are also some painted exposed internal components around the upper central ring. Inside the body of B2EMO you can see the internal mechanisms cast in a grey but devoid of any paint with the exception of the droid's eyepiece which includes a very neatly executed dual red ring. This 2022 exclusive release ticks quite a few positive boxes for collectors with a collectors feel to the packaging and in keeping with previous releases. It gives us a main character that is released exactly the same way as a general release while maintaining exclusivity with the inclusion of B2EMO. The set was also not overly difficult to obtain and at the time of writing is entering a period of price cutting making it even more desirable. Considering the reception for Andor, and B2EMO being the ‘signature’ droid of Season 1, I certainly am glad to have both figures in my collection and can happily dip out on the main release. I would say it is not worth the original RRP but now is a great time to buy, with prices falling below the £30 mark before the set disappears from retailers completely. “Hello there.” As we might expect, there have now been four Obi-Wan Kenobi Black Series figures released from his 2022 Disney+ series. The latest of these is another exclusive, and interestingly titled ‘Jedi Legend’ depicting Obi-Wan as we see him at the end of the series heading out into the Tatooine wastelands. The figure is exclusive to Walmart in the US and sold via the Fan Channel elsewhere. It is part of the Obi-Wan Kenobi Galaxy Collection, number 17 following on directly from the Qui-Gon ‘Force Spirit’ figure that shares some of his final scenes. The packaging remains in line with the rest of the releases, but we are now seeing the return to window boxes after a number of months of dealing with the plastic-free boxes. Obi-Wan ‘Jedi Legend’ is the final transition of the Obi-Wan costume from the simpler robes we see on the first two figures (Wandering Jedi and Tibidon Station) to an outfit now more aligned to his original Jedi Robes. These robed elements are carried forward from the Jabiim Obi-Wan and are cast in an off-white finish with some painted detail on the belt and around the collar of the tunic. The lower legs are updated to include higher-sitting brown leather boots with some black wrapping around the top and over off-white Jedi trousers. He retains the fingerless gloves we saw used on the Tibidon release, although these are not sculpted to be fingerless and are executed solely with black paint over the flesh-coloured plastic. The head sculpt is the newest Obi-Wan likeness and a further improvement on the previous 2022 releases inclusive of a sculpted beard, longer hair, and facial printing to capture Kenobi’s eyes and mouth. It is, as you would expect from the latest release, the best McGregor sculpt in the line to date. Obi-Wan is wearing the sleeveless hooded robe also used on the Jabiim figure. This is tailored from the softer material we’ve seen on most Jedi and Sith robes. This hangs on the frame of the body well enough but still flows flat around the figure rather than falling into more natural-looking folds and creases as we might expect. It is designed and stitched to allow the hood to sit more naturally around the figure's head, while the usual issue of getting the hood to sit against the figure in the down position being quite difficult to find an adequate look. It can be removed if you want to display Obi-Wan simply in his Jedi Robes. Obi-Wan comes with his lightsaber, the standard two-part design with a cast hilt with black, silver, and gold decor and a blue translucent blade. Despite coming with a trigger finger right hand, Obi-Wan can wield the saber perfectly well in either or both hands, and when not in use the belt socket is retained allowing the peg on the saber to plug into the socket and ‘hang’ on Obi-Wan’s belt. You can also slip the saber hilt into a pocket tailored on the left side of the soft goods robes. The figure also features the goggles that we see around Obi-Wan’s neck in those final scenes. These are an individual accessory but arrive fitted around the figure's neck. They can be carefully teased up and around the head and then will sit just as well on Obi-Wan’s forehead or across his eyes as they are of course intended. We’ve had a number of goggle accessories to date in the Black Series and these are definitely the best so far in terms of their sculpt the use of translucent red lenses that show the eyes underneath when worn, and the use of a rubberised strap and not those poor quality elasticated ones we had on the Hoth Soldier. This also feels like another nod via the show and into the figure to the Mythos Obi-Wan. There is a final accessory in the shape of the toy T-16 Skyhopper that Obi-Wan gifts to the young Luke Skywalker in the show. This is very detailed considering the scale with panel definition across the tri-wing ship and visible cockpit and engine details. It is cast in off-white with painted silver on the engines and cockpit windows and red markings on the wings. It sits on a tripod stand and this can be detached, as can the pneumatic cannon section, to make it easier for Kenobi to hold it. Articulation totals 19 points all of which are pinless and worked into the outfit and sculpt as best they can be. The figure benefits from butterfly shoulders beneath the robes which aids lightsaber stances as well as a dual joint neck and sufficient movement in the arms, legs, and waist to facilitate some action-orientated positions and potentially allowing him to ride an Eopie if Hasbro ever brings us one (or if you source one via a 3D printing option). All in all this final version of Obi-Wan in figure form completes his journey through the series from Tibidon station to him heading out into the sands of Tatooine guided by his old master. The figure is impeccably executed with no flaws to speak of other than the risk of damaging those goggles when stretching them up over his head. The figure is as close to Mythos Obi-Wan as we may get, particularly if you can adjust the Tibidon Obi-Wan's backpack to fit this release (it is a bit tight as it stands) to replicate the Mythos look. Exclusivity may pose a problem for some collectors, more so in the US from what I can gather, but thankfully this one hasn’t seen too much of a price premium vs general releases. It is certainly my favourite to date and one I’d recommend to fellow collectors. “I was always here, Obi-Wan. You were just not ready to see.” Force Spirit figures have been part of the Star Wars Black Series since 2017 when the first figure of Obi-Wan from the Original Trilogy was released in this spirit format. Since then we have also had figures of Yoda and Anakin Skywalker. And now we can add Qui-Gon Jinn to that list thanks to his latest appearance, as a Force Spirit, in the 2022 Obi-Wan Kenobi series. Every Force Spirit figure to date has been an exclusive, with this Qui-Gon version exclusive to Walmart in the US and sold via Fan Channel retailers elsewhere. It is the first Spirit figure released in the Galaxy Collection phase and rather than using blue-hued boxes as has happened in the past with Obi-Wan and Yoda, the Qui-Gon figure is packed in the same packaging as all the other Obi-Wan figures although by that definition a blue accent hue is still used on the artwork and character details. Qui-Gon is number 16 in the Obi-Wan series which follows on from the Final Duel Darth Vader and precedes the Jedi Legend Obi-Wan release at the same time. As with all Jedi Spirit figures, Hasbro has taken the existing Qui-Gon sculpt from 2017 and adapted this into an ethereal-looking Force Spirit by way of casting nearly all the parts in a translucent blue plastic. Extremities like hands, feet and the lower legs are left in this base colour while the closer we get to the core of the body and the head, paint apps come into play gradually transitioning from the blue force spirit glow to a colour more aligned to Qui-Gon’s Jedi robes but applied with a pearlescent finish. This is also applied to the head sculpt and hair, over the face print tech that enhances the likeness of the sculpt and creates a glossy glowing look. This design ethos for Force Ghosts is unchanged since the original Obi-Wan and while not to everyone's taste, it does look closer to the onscreen effects than a more traditional blue see-through figure. Over all of this sits a soft goods robe of a partially see-through sheer purple cloth. This is aiming to be reflective of Qui-Gon’s robes but is also trying to add to the mystical aura of the figure. While the body looks OK, I am not convinced by the robes which perhaps needed to be two-layered with a brown robe underneath and this sheer fabric on top to create the shimmering effect. The cut of this cloth is not as well-behaved as some of the latest soft goods and it the way it sits is quite awkward in places, particularly around the head where we have a hood section that can be posed either up or down. Up sits a bit too high over the head, while down looks a bit better but takes some work to get the hood to sit and behave behind the head. This robe piece is also removable if you want to discard it, which then won't align with the way Qui-Gon looks in his appearance in Kenobi, but may suit some collectors who find the purple robes displeasing. Qui-Gon features no accessories, as expected considering he is a ghost and there is nothing from the scenes that Hasbro could have included. That being said, the figure still retains the socket on its belt for Qui-Gon’s lightsaber as a hangover from the older base figure. Articulation is pinned due to the nature of the original release used to create this 2023 variant. This means we do get double-jointed pinned knees as part of the 16-point articulation count. The downside of the older body is the single-joint neck with a very visible joint in the neck. While we don’t need Force Spirit Qui-Gon to do much if we are recreating the Disney+ appearance, it is good to know options are there for more dynamic posing if that is your wish including some seated and kneeling positions. It is a pity that butterfly shoulders weren't included back in 2017 and couldn't be sneaked into this variant as the figure can't quite make that iconic Qui-Gon pose with his hands clasped across his waist and inside his sleeves. The Qui-Gon Jinn Force Spirit Exclusive won’t be everyone's cup of tea and therefore sits fairly well as an exclusive. The execution is probably as good as we can get within the pricing and limitations of the action figure technology and the figure itself works well enough from the translucent legs and arms through to the pearlescent hue to the main body and head. The robes don’t quite do it for me, they seem to be missing a layer to give that heft and weight of the robes we see Qui-Gon wearing on screen while retaining the outer sheer layer for the Force Spirit shimmer. Unlike many recent exclusives, this release has not seen a huge premium on top of the standard RRP and at the time of writing there appears to be a good supply at least here in the UK - US collectors may be experiencing otherwise if other Walmart exclusives are anything to go by.
