“I can't do it, R2. I can't go on alone.” R2-D2 was one of the founding members of the Star Wars Black Series, released as part of Wave 1 back in 2013. The figure has gone on to make multiple appearances as well as being the blueprint for all other Astromech figures in the line. R2 has also been a part of the previous two 40th Anniversary series for A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back and the character makes that three out of three with his Summer 2023 release as part of the 40th Anniversary of Return of the Jedi - albeit with some big upgrades on all of the prior releases. R2 arrives on the six-inch scaled backing card that uses the artwork and design of those original Kenner figures inclusive of the tramlines, retro Return of the Jedi logo, original card images of R2 in action and round the back a checklist of other releases all laid out against their coloured backgrounds. All of these painted panels are done neatly in a crisp colour finish and with no obvious errors. R2 is quite clean looking, lacking any weathering or grim as we may have expected around the feet in particular. I alluded to some big changes with this release of R2-D2 and this is because Hasbro have redesigned the Astromech body making it both bigger and more screen accurate than the original, but also introducing a couple of new features. Looking initially at the aesthetics we have a droid cast in white plastic with inserted or painted blue and silver panels. The dome is cast silver with further blue segments painted over the top and a red lens just under his visual sensors, with a similarly sized green panel around the back. Height-wise, the new R2-D2 is taller than the original and stands to the waist of a standard 6-inch figure, more in line with the on-screen look while paired with C-3PO or other characters. Our droid retains the same articulation as the original with a rotating dome and legs that are articulated at the shoulder and again at the ankle to allow for variations in stance and movement. The third leg no longer ‘winds down’ by turning the dome but is still there tucked into the main part of the body. It has to be extended manually and once deployed has articulation at the ankle to allow all three feet to sit flat on the floor in R2’s rolling position. The first R2-D2 figure in the Black Series was designed to be as extensive in accessories and looks as it could be and this new version, while based on Return of the Jedi, is no exception. The front of the body has two opening blue panels just under the dome, as seen when he blows a fuse. To either side of the main body, we have the same opening doors as the original inside which is a grey interior sculpted with mechanical workings and three slot-in holes. All four doors are a bit tricky to open and may need a slim tool to prise them into operation. They are also disguised so well into the main body that they are not immediately obvious. The panels inside the opening doors are made to slot in some of the various tools included with R2 including the welder he used to fix C-3PO’s leg in Empire to the plug-in data probe, terminal probe and grasping arm. Each accessory slots into any of the six holes provided for a variety of differing looks and configurations. We also have two scanners that fit into the top of R2-D2’s dome by way of a single blue panel that pops off and reveals a slot underneath. These scanners include the one used on Hoth to scan for life signs, and the periscope used predominantly on Dagobah. Like the tools, these slot into the hole snugly and add a level of character to R2 depending on the situation you would like to represent when posing him on display. Hasbro’s final improvement to R2 is an internal storage functionality that allows all of these fiddly parts to be stowed away with the figure for future use. This is executed by pulling up the dome which then grants access to an internal section - sculpted with detailing to look like the innards of a droid - which includes six grooved slots that hold each of the included accessories in place. As a feature, it is hugely practical with a good level of execution and ease of use with only the Periscope part proving slightly problematic when trying to close the Droid back up with its full complement of gear. The 40th Anniversary R2-D2 does most things really well. It is a well-sculpted figure, with crisp decor - albeit lacking a touch of real-world weathering, good articulation as expected on a droid, great accessories and a fun storage feature built in. It also addresses the sizing issue that has long since been a criticism of the Black Series Astromechs and this new sizing will go on to the new standard with an R5-D4 already in the works using the same body. The only issue the figure, and the resizing, causes are discrepancies across other Droids in the line with Hasbro unlikely to remake the likes of the Red Squadron Droids or the Imperial Forces Droid. This carded 40th Anniversary release sees the first release of this new R2 and is aimed at the majority of carded collectors. For those who don't want the 40th Anniversary release, a general Galaxy Collection release is incoming although this one will be labelled as a Mandalorian release. “We need to think of our own hides right now.” Hasbro’s Dungeons & Dragons Golden Archive series of 6-inch collector-focused figures was built on the initial release of 2020’s Drizzt Do’Urden and Guenhyver set, and came into being on the back of the 2023 release of the new Dungeons & Dragons movie - Honor Among Thieves. This new collection kicked off with the odd release of the Gelatinous Cube and soon expanded into the first full wave of figures based on the movie characters. Each figure is packed in a plastic-free windowless box with a top hanging tab and a corner angled off into a triangle a the top right, paying homage to the dice used playing D&D. The box is predominantly black with gold ornate trim surrounding the character image on the front and the logo with a picture of the figure and contents set into the front as an insert over the main image. To the left of the box is a larger image of the character, while the right side spine carries a brief character bio. The rear of the box includes a larger posed picture of the figure and further confirmation of the accessories as well as a QR code taking you to the DnD homepage. Holga is wearing her barbarian clothing as seen throughout the movie. These are a mixture of brown cast elements like the legs and waist area, overlaid with darker leather look panels and off-white fur trim. The central chest armour also incorporates a silver central plate with brass fastenings and the outfit is finished off with a belt section with further hanging fur and a tied plaited rope fastening that hangs down almost to Holga’s fur-lined boots. The detailing is impressive, but it is all pretty much done in the base colour with no washes or highlighting which would have taken the various textures to a whole new level. Holga’s headsculpt is pretty weak overall with no definitive likeness to Michelle Rodriguez of any description. The face is quite generic and is missing the more distinctive elements of Holga’s look, particularly the strong jaw, cheekbones, and that facial smirk she seems to carry off in most scenes. There is also a lack of any applied print technology, the eyes have almost reverted to the older white paint and black lining and iris we saw on figures some 5-10 years ago. The forehead feels too large and out of proportion with the head. The only highlight of the head is the hair piece with its variety of plaits and ties - it is just missing some added highlights or a wash to bring these details out further. While the head is disappointing, a brilliant job has then been done on Holga’s tattoos as seen on either arm - these appear to be decal applied. You might expect Holga to get the same 20-point articulation count as Forge, but instead, she is sold short with just 16 points of articulation. Holga is particularly short-changed in the arms with only a single elbow joint that can't even make a 90-degree bend. There is also no bicep swivel and no butterfly shoulders. The D&D figures have not yet adopted the dual joint neck, so Holga’s head sits on a fixed neck with an upper ball joint - the head is then restricted considerably by the hair which forces the head to be looking down too much when moved. For a figure based on a Barbarian Warrior, this is really disappointing when it comes to wielding her included weaponry restricting Holga to neutral poses only. That weaponry includes a short dagger, held in a working sheath on her belt. This features a gold-painted hilt and dark blade. The main weapon is the axe Holga takes from her would-be executioner. Like other accessories in the line, this loosely recreates the screen prop but in much more rudimentary detail, and what should be an impressive and ornate war axe looks sloppy and feels out of place with the detail on the figure itself. The axe is cast in grey with silver applied loosely in two areas of the handle, and the axe head is trimmed in a bronze metallic finish. The axe can be extended from a short handle to a longer grip not by some clever telescoping mechanism, but by swapping out the handles with two lengths included in the set. When not in use the axe can be holstered via a plug-in sheath on Holga’s back. Like the other figures in the wave, a lot of work has gone into the costume that has not then been matched in the quality of head sculpt or the accessories. Holga is also disadvantaged further by reduced articulation on a character that needed the full arm options more than any considering her use of the war axe. At the £25 RRP this would have felt like a disappointing purchase, at the discount prices these are now reaching the figure is more palatable but that in itself is not a great sign for the longevity of this line. Hasbro's presentation at MCM London Comic Con featured reveals from Marvel, Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and Transformers. After a number of months without any new products, we finally got some new Transformers Studio Series reveals, all due for release in the Spring of 2024. The new Transformers included Deluxe Class Wheeljack and Scorponok from Rise of the Beasts. There are Core Class figures of Mohawk from The Last Knight, and Rumble a figure based on concept art from Bumblebee. The Voyager Class releases were Scrapheap from the 1986 movie and the Gamer Edition Starscream from War for Cybertron, The Leader Class is another concept art release, this time of Megatron from Bumblebee - he will be a triple-changer. Forge Fitzwilliam, is depicted in figure form in his Lord of Neverwinter finary starting off with a red tunic into which is sculpted an emerald pendant with gold surround. He is wearing a pair of blue trousers with knee-high dark grey boots. Over this sits an ornate golden long coat with relief scrollwork and patterns picked out in gold over the glossy brown base. Forge is also wearing a belt with a gold buckle and a blue necktie. The paintwork, where applied, is impressive - not just the coat, but also the detailing of the pendant even when it is mostly hidden by the neck scarf. Other jewelry detail is also evident on the hands with individual rings sculpted and then painted to finish Forge’s look. The head sculpt is not quite at the standard of the Marvel Legends line which is currently leading the way on likeness across most of its MCU figures, but Forge does have a passing likeness to Hugh Grant a look that is more accurate from a side on position rather than looking at him head-on. Faceprint tech is used to colour the eyes and mouth, but there are no obvious additional skin tones to add definition and texture to what is quite a smooth face. Forge’s hair is well done with a grey base coat and lighter highlights around the sculpted side parting and front brushed fringe that has been Grant’s trademark look for many years. The figure has a trio of accessories starting with a large crossbow. This is also relatively featureless and includes a brown central shaft, grey cross-section, and front ring. The bow itself is black and the trigger is a silver segment underneath the main body of the weapon. While this is all accurate in terms of shape vs. the prop, it is all too bulky and looks out of place with a 6-inch collector line. Forge is also armed with a small knife, tucked away in a working holster beneath his coat. This is also relatively featureless with a simple handle and curved silver blade. The final accessory, the ornate chalice, is the best of the three pieces but is not the gold we are shown on the box and instead is a dull brown finish once unpacked. There are more details sculpted into this piece than the weaponry, but much of this is lost in the dull colour and lack of any additional highlighting or washes. It also feels oversized when placed into Forge’s hands. The articulation count on Forge is 20 in total, all pinless and inclusive of double-jointed knees and elbows, butterfly joint shoulders, a ball joint waist, and a single neck joint. While the coat limits some movement, the articulation supports a good level of posing options with any of the three accessories including some of Forge’s more expressive mannerisms and poses from the movie. The bicep swivels are the weakest element with their shape cut as a flat line and not shaped like Marvel Legends, leaving them out of line when posed to turn the elbows or arms inward or outward. The D&D figures are going to need time - time they may not get - to find their feet, and Forge is an example of a new line where certain aspects are absolutely nailed on like the coat decor, and other elements like the facial features are still not taking advantage of the techniques we are seeing on other Hasbro lines. This same issue was seen in the first Ghostbusters and Indiana Jones waves and is repeating itself with the D&D line. The accessories are poor for a fantasy line that is going to live or die by the quality of weaponry, armour, and costumes. Forge was also not a particularly engaging ‘enemy’ in the movie, with more ‘Toyetic’ potential in the Red Wizard characters he was allied with. Forge is currently on deep discount which is not great news for the line, but at half the RRP or more the line is certainly worth picking up fans of D&D in general or the movie itself. Hasbro's Premium Members 1027 event took place on the evening of the 27th of October 2023 and had reveals from across the Hasbro key product lines. We had three new Spider-Man figures unveiled during the 1027 event, each part of the carded retro wave. We can look forward to 2024 releases of the Last Stand Spider-Man, Jack O'Lantern, and Scarlet Spider. The Hasbro team have confirmed that the carded packaging will be used ongoing for selected releases with a new Spider-Man modern inspired card now in play for characters from newer comic properties like the Last Stand Spider-Man. Hasbro's Premium Members 1027 event took place on the evening of the 27th of October 2023 and had reveals from across the Hasbro key product lines. The Star Wars Black Series reveals started a bit ahead of time with a sneak peek at a new sub-series of Black Series figures called the 'Clones of the Republic' series. The first of these new releases will see an exclusive 2-pack of Mace Mindu - updated with his Clone armour - and a 187th Clone Trooper (this time with the purple colouring inspired by the comics and Hasbro's original 3.75-inch figure rather than the muted burgundy we saw on the Clone Wars single release. The dual angle-sided box remains in line with the Galaxy Collection, but the series doesn't fit in with the other Clone Wars releases and was named as a 'Entertainment Agnostic' packaging - so not aligned with any of the other collections. The set is a Disney Store exclusive with stocks also sold on Hasbro Pulse. The set is a March 2024 release, with the pre-orders on Hasbro Pulse open now - while the team confirmed the Shop Disney listing will follow as part of a wider 'Clones of the Republic' program. We also knew that a re-release of Paz Vizsla from The Mandalorian was incoming after a pipeline reveal earlier this year. The figure will be a deluxe repack and placed into the Galaxy Collection box under The Mandalorian banner. It will be released in April 2024 and is a general release across all Black Series retailers. In terms of the Vintage Collection, the solitary 1027 reveal was the full look at the previously confirmed updated Cassian Andor figure from Rogue One. He is due to be a March 2024 release. Joe segment kicked off with some 'name only' reveals of figures they are working on with confirmation that Raptor and the Iron Grenadiers are currently in the works and will be previewed in due course. The team then went on to unbox the VAMP, the first of their new larger vehicle format - indicating their may be others in the works? The VAMP had been known about for some time now after a digital render reveal back at SDCC 2023, and the 1027 event provided the full reveal and the pre-order launch ahead of a May 2024 release. The set will be number 112 in the line, with Cluth featuring two helmet options, a wrench and a pair of weapons. The VAMP itself includes further accessories including a fire extinguisher, fire axe, and fuel cans. The VAMP with Clutch is a Hasbro Pulse exclusive and is a May 2024 release. Hasbro does like to put future releases into their promo art, so if you do want to read into it, the VAMP box also features a Cobra Ferret in the background of the artwork. There was also a fairly heavy hint during the unboxing of the VAMP that they have created the ability to hook up a trailer and it seems the MMS (Mobile Missile System) may well be in the works. G.I. Heading to Amazon as a Gold Label exclusive is this new McFarlane DC Multiverse deluxe release of Lobo and Spacehog. The set will feature an alternative head for Lobo as well as his chain and guitar. Intergalactic biker LOBO is the last survivor of the alien CZARNIAN race, but only because he killed the whole lot of them. “We’re fighting against the dark.” Vel Sertha was released as part of Wave 11 of the Star Wars Black Series Galaxy Collection. The wave was a mix of figures from Star Wars properties including three from Obi-Wan Kenobi, and a pair of Gaming Greats from The Old Republic. The wave was plastic-free and windowless with artwork of the figures used on the box. The packaging uses a deep red accent colour as assigned to Andor and this is present on some of the labelling and the side artwork. Vel Sertha should be #09 in the Andor series, following on directly from Cassian Andor from the previous wave. Unfortunately, a packaging error has labelled her as #08, the same as Cassian. I picked up Vel Sartha at the same time as Luthen Rael and Cassian Andor as I rounded off my Andor series figures. Out of the box I was struck with her diminutive stature as she stands a full head shorter than Luthen and at least half a head shorter than Cassian. The sizing is however accurate with Actor Faye Marsey listed as 1.57m tall, which translates to the 13.3cm height of Vel in the Black Series. She is wearing her combat uniform as seen on the mission to Aldhani and this is made up of her brown dual front jacket which appears to be a rubberised sleeve over a more generic female torso. Paint apps here include some darker trim to the jacket front and a lighter brown to depict the shirt underneath. The trousers are cast in black with no further decor, and the outfit is completed with a pair of knee-high brown boots. Vel is wearing fingerless black gloves, and her left hand also features a sculpted and painted wrist communicator. The head sculpt is a reasonable likeness to Marsey, but like the Fourth Sister from the same wave the sculpt quality and said likeness are not as good as what was originally shown in the promo art. A more bronzed skin tone doesn’t help, and neither does the glossy finish to the face. Facial details include the photo-real application for Vel Sartha’s eyes, and there are also details picked out on her lips and an earring in her right ear. The hair is initially sculpted with the head, painted in sandy brown. The ponytail is an individual piece plugged in at the back of the head and made to flow around her left shoulder. This is a lighter tone to the bulk of the hair, with some transition blending between the two, but this is lost when looking at the figure face on and the two shades don't quite work together and would have been better left as the same tone muted down and with a bit of a wash. Vel is armed with a single blaster that is not initially what we see on the front of the box. The reason is some built-in ‘articulation’ for want of a better word with a foldable rear stock that pivots outward, and a barrel that sits within the body of the gun until pulled out and extended. This gives the gun a few different looks if you want to go down that route while it is also reasonably well-detailed cast in its dark grey plastic and even comes with a torch of silver painted detail on the top of the main barrel. The gun fits into the right hand with a bit of a squeeze with Vel’s hands being quite small. Getting the stock to work is also tricky, but worth it for firing poses - although it will slip out of its pins if you aren’t careful. The left hand can grip the barrel for two-handed poses. Articulation weighs in at 19 points in total with the inclusion of butterfly shoulders under the jacket sleeve and a dual joint neck. The joints all work as they should and support various poses including kneeling and more dynamic stances with or without the blaster rifle - although the latter can be frustrating in finding the sweet spot of articulated pose and keeping the blaster in a natural position via the smaller hands of Vel Sartha. The release of Vel Sartha within the Andor series adds a further supporting character to any display, building out the worlds and scenes of Andor. As a figure, Vel Sartha ticks most boxes positively, although the head likeness is not quite right and the skin and hair tones are too orange and really needed to be paired back. The gun is fun but can be frustrating in slotting it, and all its moving parts, into a posed position. This aside, the articulation is at the highest level we now expect in the Black Series, retaining the butterfly shoulders that had been dropped on other figures in the same wave like the Fourth Sister. Vel Sartha is a relatively new release and remains available. She is a recommended addition for Andor fans, looking great in a wider display - and we can hope to see more of the Aldhani rebel team join her in the future. “There will be no rules going forward.” Luthen Rael, as seen in the first season of Andor, was released in Spring 2023 in the first wave of Andor-focused figures - the 10th wave of the Galaxy collection overall. The wave was the first to see what would end up being a temporary move to plastic-free windowless boxes. Images of the figure were presented on the box instead, posed on the front and with a checklist of contents around the side. The Andor figures use a deep red colour scheme on top of the black and with the slanted side artwork. Luthen is number #06 in the Andor collection sitting between Bix Calleen and Mon Mothma. The first thing to strike me as I unpacked Luthen was his height, he is a tall character standing at 16cm or 6.3 inches tall. I was initially puzzled by his stature, but checking online it is accurate with actor Stellan Skarsgård standing 1.9m tall. Luthen is wearing his large overcoat as worn during his dealings on Ferrix in the show. The coat is an individual piece in a drab green softer plastic with a lighter painted trim up either side of the extended collar. The coat is removable, but that is essentially pointless considering the arms of the coat are sculpted down to flared sleeves from which the shirt beneath is painted a purple hue, and the hands as fingerless black gloves. Under the coat, Luthen the torso is cast in the purple of the shirt with sculpted buttons and a pair of brown painted braces. The baggy trousers are a differing shade of the green tones used on the figure and ends tucked into a pair of ankle-height black boots. The head sculpt on Luthen is remarkable in its likeness to Skarsgård and it is certainly one of the best this year. The depth of the sculpt captures the lines and features of Luthen’s face, overlaid with the photo-real paint application but without the glossy finish which we’ve seen so often on other recent Black Series figures - and the difference is astonishingly good. There are 17 points of articulation on Luthen, with the figure losing the thigh swivels that are now apparently being phased out across the line. Leg movement remains sufficient with the rotation built into the knees and sufficient movement in ankle rockers and hips to present a number of alternative stances within the confines of the coat which does reach down to Luthen’s ankles. The arms include elbow and wrist joints and a two-part shoulder that includes the ball joint and a butterfly joint. The arms are fully manoeuvrable, but perhaps not that pretty once they are posed as the arms of the coat are flattened and then flared meaning when they move they don't act as they should in terms of gravity and it can look off and out of place. The head sits on a dual joint neck aiding posing and expressions without the need for a visible joint. Luthen features two accessories, the first is a hold-out blaster cast in grey plastic with a metallic gunmetal finish and with a painted off-white grip. This is made to fit in the right hand of the figure but there is no holster options as we might expect considering all that space to hide one beneath the coat. The second weapon is the baton which can actually split apart revealing the knife underneath. This is cast in brown with a painted grey cap on one end and a dull grey-silver blade on the knife. These two elements fit in either hand but again there is no place to stow these when not in use. Luthen Rael is a figure that delivers one of the best head sculpts and finishes in the line this year, with clever accessories including a baton that hides a knife as we see on screen. He is wearing a costume as seen in the show, but the execution of this does leave the figure looking bulky and with articulation limited both physically by the costume, but also aesthetically as those huge puffy flattened arms start to look really odd when raised from a neutral position. This was not perhaps Luthen’s most striking costume from the show either, and I do hope that we may see the head sculpt reused on a second figure with the blue hooded look we see later in the series. Luthen Rael remains widely available at retail along with most of the Andor figures. McFarlane are expanding their Page Punchers line into the Pacific Rim series, with a new wave of releases based on the Pacific Rim 'Tales from the Drift' and 'Afternmath' comic book series. The sets feature a 4-inch figure, a street scene with a break-apart building as well as scaled vehicles. As is the premise of the Page Punchers line, a comic book is also included with each release. There are four Jaegers to choose from including Gypsy Danger, Cherno Alpha, Crimson Typhoon, and Striker Eureka. They are joined by four Kaiju - Knifehead, Raiiju, Otachi, and Leatherback. The series is also expanded further with an Amazon Exclusive Gold Label 'Starter Pack' release that comes with variants of Gypsy Danger, Striker Eureka, and Raiiju. The set also comes with three buildings and a selection of military planes and vehicles. All of these Pacific Rim sets are down to release in November 2023. Gipsy Danger is powered by a nuclear heart and built to destroy. With its deadly Chain Sword it whips and slashes enemies in close-quarters combat. For extra blasting power, upgrade to the PlasmaCaster energy cannon. Cherno Alpha is a 'head-strong' soldier built to stand its ground no matter what. Massive electro-fists and fire-shooting turrets make this mech a real powerhouse, but Cherno prefers to punch and crunch. Crimson Typhoon is the only 3-armed mech in the fleet, attacking with mind-blowing arts moves. Power punches, rocket kicks, and special weapons make "The Red Goliath" the ultimate triple threat. Striker Eureka is the strongest, fastest mech on the planet. Its Sting-Blades are sharp enough to cut through bone and buildings. Striker's secret weapon is a chest full of missiles blowing enemies to bits with its powerful 'Six Shooter' attack. Knifehead is a jagged-toothed headhunter with a deadly toxic bite and acid flowing through its veins. Raiju is a two-faced killer, dangerous from head to toe. The 'Thunder Beast' is armed with razor-sharp claws, a double set of snapping jaws, and a powerful tail. Under Raiju's armor-plated skin, acidic toxicity surges through its bloodstream, making him double the trouble. Otachi is an acid-spitting, creepy-crawling giant with a slimy secret.
