“Yesterday belongs to us, Doctor Jones” Hasbro’s 3rd general releasewave of their Indiana Jones Adventure Series figures was themed predominantly around The Last Crusade, but as with wave 2, they have also shoe-horned in a couple of figures from The Dial of Destiny. Jurgen Voller is packed in the now-established Adventure Series square window-less box packaging with the decor paying homage to the Indiana Jones red-line travel map overlaid with images of the figure and the generic Indy logo. The side art is sand coloured and character-specific, while the alternative spine includes a checklist of releases and a breakdown of the various ‘build-an-artifact’ parts spread across the wave. Only on the rear of the box is any reference made to Dial of Destiny as the source of the figure alongside a visual guide of the figure, the accessories, and the build-an-artifact parts. There is no inclusion on the packaging of any synopsis for the movie or background info for the character. The Jurgen Voller figure is designed on his look during the hunt for the Dial in 1969. He is designed in his brown suit which is all cast in its base colour with the only paint app the blue cuffs of his shirt at the end of each sleeve. The shirt itself is a cast torso in light blue with a separate collar section with painted blue collars and a brown tie that extends down over the shirt as a flexible plastic piece. The majority of the suited body is carried forward from the Professor Indiana Jones figure and was also used on the recent Marcus Brody, only the suit jacket is updated for Voller. The head sculpts on the Indy figures are very much finding their feet and the Mads Mikkelsen likeness on the figure is pretty strong with his eyes in particular executed well via the photo-real decor application. The glasses are OK considering the scale and include actual clear plastic lenses, although the rims and arms are a bit on the thick size. I was surprised they can actually be removed from the head, revealing the full sculpt beneath. Sadly, the hat is not removable although it is an individual piece with a flexi-plastic rim glued on the head sculpt. The suited body of Voller has 19 points of articulation including the usual elbow, knee, and shoulder joints, the latter also including the butterfly joint under the coat. These are all pin-less and fairly well integrated into the sculpt of the suit and disguised further by the darker brown colouring of the clothing. Everything works well enough, with the exception of the ankle rockers which are not quite aligned to get a flat-footed pose easily. The figure comes with a single accessory, Voller’s satchel. It is cast in a darker brown than the suit and includes sculpted clasps that are picked out in gold. The bag uses a flexible plastic strap that allows the bag to be shoulder slung and it also includes a handle that can also be used. The figure fails to deliver on any weaponry, despite having a trigger finger right hand, and the big miss is the lack of the actual Dial of Destiny which is still missing from the line. Jurgen Voller is another suited figure in a line dominated by suited figures and while the figure is a predominant re-use of existing bodies, this doesn't cause any particular concerns. The outfit colouring and the cut of the newer jacket are relatively accurate with what we see Jurgen wearing in the movie and the look is further enhanced by a strong head sculpt. The glasses kind of work and the removable aspect is a nice touch, and it is a pity that the hat wasn't also similarly removable. While the bag accentuates the costume the lack of any other accessory is poor - particularly the Dial of Destiny itself which remains absent in the line. For fans of the latest Indy movie, the release provides us a representation of the key protagonist to display with Indy and Helena, but is nothing particularly spectacular in a wave that has some much more impressive figures visually. It was one year ago when I came out of hospital after 5-months of fighting a pretty serious illness. In that time my website went into a forced hiatus, losing valuable visitors and followers as well as putting a 6-month hole into my reviews and databases. People I know are now referring to this time as my 'blip'. In the last year, I have been working on recovering physically and mentally, and one of the key goals I set for myself was to recover the website as much as I can including working through a huge box of figures to review. As October approached I wanted to ramp up that challenge and set a personal target to do one review a day across October - both of incoming new releases, but filling in the gaps with reviews of figures from my 'blip' box. As we reach Halloween I can confirm that the challenge has indeed been met, along with some visitor numbers that are starting to reach the heights the website was getting pre-May 2022. “We must never stop failing, because the minute we do, we've failed” Hasbro’s Dungeons & Dragons Golden Archive series of 6-inch collector-focused figures was built on the initial release of 2020’s Drizzt Do’Urden and Guenhyver set, and came into being on the back of the 2023 release of the new Dungeons & Dragons movie - Honor Among Thieves. This new collection kicked off with the odd release of the Gelatinous Cube and soon expanded into the first full wave of figures based on the movie characters. Each figure is packed in a plastic-free windowless box with a top hanging tab and a corner angled off into a triangle a the top right, paying homage to the dice used playing D&D. The box is predominantly black with gold ornate trim surrounding the character image on the front and the logo with a picture of the figure and contents set into the front as an insert over the main image. To the left of the box is a larger image of the character, while the right side spine carries a brief character bio. The rear of the box includes a larger posed picture of the figure and further confirmation of the accessories as well as a QR code taking you to the DnD homepage. Edgin Darvin’s figure replicates his movie costume with a blue shirt, beige trousers, and knee-high boots, each cast in their base colour and with no further paint application. This casting of parts has caused some colour variations in the legs with the knees and groin a visibly different shade than the other parts of the legs. Edgin also features a belt, added as an individual piece around the waist with sculpted but unpainted buckle detail - a shame considering the details we've seen on other costumes like Holga and Simon. Over this is Edgin’s coat, a softer plastic overcoat in a deep olive green finish with painted bronze fastenings down the front. In reality, this colour is out of line with the screen costume which has a more blue/grey tone. The head sculpt bears a passing resemblance to Chris Pine but features a more elongated look and like Holga a forehead that looks a bit too big. Photo-real print tech is applied to the eyes and mouth and adds stubble around the lower part of the face. There is a glossy finish to some elements of Edgin’s face, the heavy eyebrows in particular. As we saw with Forge, Edgin’s better likeness is when viewed from the side profile. Edgin features a small dagger tucked away in a holster under his coat. This is particularly difficult to access and is rudimentary in execution with a dark grey handle, and silver blade. Edgin also comes with the Tablet of Reawakening, a green jade cast accessory with very well-defined carvings but no paintwork to enhance these further. Edgin comes with his Lute and the strap and harness in which to mount it over his back when not in use. The harness is a removable piece, created in a softer brown plastic with a basked weaved bottom section and inlaid with a gold-painted clasp. The Lute is a lighter red/brown finish with inlaid relief details including the strings which are painted in beige. The rear of the Lute features a nutshell design with patched elements in metallic silver, brown wood with silver rivets, and a leather-look patch. The Lute and its harness are the best accessory to date in the D&D Golden Archive line and work perfectly in terms of being held by the figure, and in a holstered position on the figure's back. Articulation on Edgin is the highest of the line so far, 22 points in total with the addition of a boot cut swivel alongside the double joint knees & elbows, butterfly joint shoulders, and ball joint waist and neck. That provides Edgin with sufficient movement to play his Lute as well as wield the other included accessories - his gripped hands having enough play in their softer plastic to hold all of them - although the dagger grip is quite loose. Edgin does quite a few things right, with another well-recreated costume - albeit with the wrong shade on the coat. The head sculpt is OK, the accessories well designed and brought to life, and the figure comes with the best articulation we’ve seen to date providing Edgin plenty of posing options. Even with all this going for him, Edgin and the rest of Wave 1 have not sold brilliantly well and are now on deep discount - which does pose questions over any further figures in the line. Worth picking up for the less than half-price RRP, and he does make for a nice Adventurers display heading up the other Wave 1 figures. McFarlane have announced a Gold Label Movie Maniac exclusive release of Red Miller - as played by Nicolas Cage - from the movie Mandy. The set is a posed 6-inch figure featuring a printed backdrop and a diorama base. The set is limited to 3000 units and available in the US exclusively at the McFarlane Store. In 2024 we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of The Phantom Menace, and the first action figure products marking that occasion have been previewed by Bandai. The Tamashii Nations S.H. Figuarts releases of Darth Maul and Qui-Gon Jinn from The Phantom Menace will be April 2024 releases. Maul will come with at least two head options, alternative hands, his cloak, probe droid, and of course his dual-bladed lightsaber. Qui-Gon will also feature a soft goods robe as well has his poncho. He too looks to have two portraits and features his lightsaber as well as smaller accessories including the hologram of the projected Naboo Starship, and his communicator. NECA have listed another classic Horror figure pre-order on the NECA store with this Ultimate John Carver figure from the 2023 movie Thanksgiving. The release will come with a removable hat and three masks for Carver. Simon the Sorcerer is captured in his robes starting with grey trousers, and a drab yellow shirt. Over this is a wonderfully intricately texturally sculpted purple tunic tied off with a similarly detailed belt with painted silver buckles. Hanging from the belt are a pair of spell pouches, a simple leather pouch with hanging rope ties, and the golden mechanical pouch which itself includes sculpted circular pattern which is then painted in a darker finish. The outfit is finished off with a rubberised plastic cloak in brown with further internal sculpted shapes and runes, and an outer textured hem that is weathered to loom mud-spattered. Simon is also carrying his bag of holding, fitted under the cloak, with a brown and red strap and a red, blue and white patterned front cover. Both bag and cloak are technically removable, but to do this you will need to pop off the head first. The head sculpt for Simon is the best of the first wave with a strong likeness to actor Justice Smith and with the best facial printed application of the wave to assist the realism of the sculpt around the eyes and mouth in particular. The textured hair is a single colour but is deep enough in the sculpt to allow the light to provide shading and highlights. The only issue with the hair is coverage, with the back part of the hair visibly unpainted and left in the base flesh tone. Simon has 16 points of articulation, arriving with a full set of leg joints including double-jointed knees. The arm joints are poor, with a single joint elbow that barely bends and shoulders that lack the butterfly joints and that are prevented from upward movement by the cut of the purple tunic. With only a single ball joint for the neck, the head movement is also restricted, and like Holga, the neck feels like the head is pushed too far forward and is looking down too much. Simon’s hands are sculpted with the right featuring a gripping action, with the left designed to emulate a spell-casting pose with fingers outstretched. Simon comes with the helmet of disjunction an individual piece cast in a yellow/gold softer plastic with a hammered metal finish and with a painted silver trim around the centre. It is shaped to fit over Simon’s head and this does make it look oversized around Simon’s head. Simon’s other accessory is the Hither-Thither staff, cast in brown with a blue metallic painted jewel inset at the top and with some blue dotted patterns down the main shaft to the gold trim at the base. The finish is more detailed than other accessories we’ve seen in wave 1 but remains soft and lacking clarity and the colour choice is out of line with the wood needing to be darker and washed and the blue pattern brighter. While the staff fits into Simon’s right hand, the lack of elbow and shoulder movement limits the posing options with the Hither-Thither staff. Simon is probably a better all-round figure than most of the Wave 1 releases. Hasbro's presentation at MCM London Comic Con featured reveals from Marvel, Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and Transformers. The Star Wars Black Series reveals included the promo image and details for Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala (Theed Palace) from The Phantom Menace. Both figures had been known about for some time having been revealed via the pipeline process a few months earlier during the May the 4th livestream. It is understood that these figures are shared Fan Channel exclusives - not part of a general release wave - and they are due to ship in Spring 2024 and are live for pre-order as of the 30th of October. Also coming in Spring 2024 is a new Black Series roleplay Carson Teva X-Wing helmet as seen in The Mandalorian. We also got pipeline reveals for 2024 from the Hasbro Team, starting with another 'Clones of the Republic' 2-Pack of a Phase II Clone Trooper and a B1 Battle Droid - this will be an exclusive to Shop Disney & Hasbro Pulse.
