McFarlane has released the details of the 10th figure in their DC Multiverse Collector Edition Series. This new Wonder Woman figure, based on Who is Wonder Woman, will feature alternative hands, the Lasso of Truth as well as Sword, Axe, and Shield. She also comes with the collector's card and a stand in which to display it. She is not specifically listed as being part of a wave and is a general release due to arrive in January 2024 release. Preternia have also shared details of a Platinum Edition Chase variant of the figure, repainted in more classic Wonder Woman comic book colouring. “If the Master is here on Gallifrey, then this represents the final challenge. It explains why I was brought here.” The second batch of Doctor Who 5.5-inch collectors sets for B&M stores in the UK arrived in November 2023 and included a pair of History of the Daleks releases as well as the sole 3-pack of 2023. This single three-pack had long been rumoured as being taken from the 1976 story, The Deadly Assassin, which had many speculating on the contents including a re-release of the decaying Master. Instead, Character surprised us by delivering a set containing three robed Time Lords from the story. The packaging for this new three-pack has the same dimensions as the older sets but has now moved to the newer theme and colour schemes, established for the 2023 anniversary year with the late Summer B&M releases. This translates as a white box overlaid with a secondary blue colour and carrying various call-outs confirming the contents of the set, the story from which it is taken, and that this falls in the era of Tom Baker’s 4th Doctor. The new format of colour coding Doctor’s remains a bit undefined within the limited sets we’ve had so far. The Deadly Assassin set seems to be using the same blue accent colour that was described as the general colour scheme for non-era specific sets and as has been used on the Five Doctors set from a couple of months back, and again on the new series Daleks this time around. I assume the colour coding will become clearer as more sets are released. The box continues with the long-established inclusion of the gold ‘limited edition’ sticker in the bottom corner. Around the back of the box is the very extensive background text detailing a very in-depth breakdown of The Deadly Assassin storyline. This is a relatively recent update to the 3-packs from 2021 as earlier sets have been lacking in this level of detail while the Dalek and TARDIS releases have always carried it. On this release, the text doesn’t feature the usual Character Options ‘behind the scenes’ info around the props, costume or the making of the serial. It seems this release also marks the transition of the 3-pack format to include a backing card and blister packaging to hold the figures rather than a traditional window box. This does leave the edges of where the window should be prone to feathering and damage. It also means there is no longer a clean way of opening the box and then resealing the contents afterward. This change does, however, bring back a coloured backing card for the sets, with a blue vortex cardboard insert as opposed to the drab grey that has been used since the diorama backdrops were withdrawn. *original 2008 Time Lord figure on the far right The Deadly Assassin set, based on the 1976 story, actually doesn’t include the Deadly Assassin and instead takes the Time Lord figure released back in 2008 and from this base body creates three new figures based on the Deadly Assassin. These robed characters include Chancellor Goth, Cardinal Borusa, and the Fourth Doctor himself. We start with Borusa who is actually just a full repaint of the original Time Lord figure, even though that wasn’t specifically designed as Borusa but instead the Time Lord seen in the flashback scenes from David Tennant’s Season 3 final story arc. As this was never sculpted to look like Borusa, the likeness to actor Angus MacKay is lacking and ironically the paintwork of the original figure with the grey hair is more accurate than this new version where the hair has been painted in brown. The costume is however impressive with the robes of the original Timelord figure recast in deep red plastic and painted with golden line work and a silver trim down the front of the gown. The shoulder and headpiece remain a translucent plastic, now deep red, and include further red trims around the edge and through the middle alongside the painted Timelord Seal which is executed in a black base colour, dry brushed over with gold. Borusa’s costume is finished off with the hands painted in black to simulate gloves with a circular silver disk. Chancellor Goth does get a new head sculpt, one that does have a resemblance to actor Bernard Horsfall, albeit quite basic in execution as is the way of the long-running Doctor Who figures. The head for Goth appears larger than his peers in the set, not too much to look out-of-scale, but certainly larger. Goth’s body is again the same robed Time Lord figure, now cast in a light brown, almost orange, plastic. The robes for Goth lack the detailing of Borusa but are weathered ever so subtly with a lighter brown colour. We also get a diamond silver & black pattern down the front trim - a slightly simplified but reasonably accurate replication of the onscreen costume. Goth’s shoulder and headpiece is translucent orange with orange, gold and red trims. The Time Lord seals are painted in the same way with a black base and gold details, and Goth’s finish on these seals appears much crisper than Borusa’s. Like Borusa, Goth’s hands are also painted to represent gloves. This time they are a glossy brown finish and include the silver disk on the rear of each hand. The final figure is the Fourth Doctor in his Timelord robes from The Deadly Assassin. As with Borusa and Goth, the whole base figure is the same 2008 Time Lord with the Doctor. The base colour plastic is pretty much the same as used on Goth although the Doctor’s inner robes are the same brown as the outer robes and these also lack any ornate pattern or details, although they do carry forward the lighter brown weathering. The shoulder piece is once again translucent plastic, with the Doctor receiving orange trim only and black and gold painted Timelord seals. The Doctor’s hands are flesh-coloured. The head sculpt is a new Tom Baker sculpt which does have a minimal likeness while also appearing slightly too slim and dour for the Doctor. The hair is crammed in under the skull cap which also throws the likeness slightly although Character have done their best at depicting the hair pushing its way out at the front and sides. As all three figures share the same body, they also share the same articulation. On paper, this is 16 points in total, but the reality of a robed figure does mean much of the lower leg articulation is locked in by the skirted part of the robes. The arms too are held back at the shoulders leaving movement really only available at the pinned elbow joints and in the wrists. The heads can rotate slightly within the headpiece, and the only other movement of note is the waist which will rotate but adds nothing other than repositioning the inner skirt slightly. The B&M Doctor Who Collectors sets have been built on repaints and repacks over the years, with only the more recent sets starting to see additional cast parts like new heads. To that end, this Deadly Assassin set and its re-use of the Timelord robed body is not a surprise and fits very much with the keeping of these sets ensuring a low retail price of £21.99 is held - less than £8 per figure. The set will, in my opinion, suffer slightly from lacking any variety, and including a decaying Master in lieu of one of the Time Lords may have been a better option. I do very much like the Time Lord figures, each of them is different enough in paint and head sculpt so as not to look regimented and I wouldn't be averse to seeing other variants in the future (very much like Dapol). Providing production numbers are not significantly reduced on this 3-pack after the 2022 sets hung around for far longer than B&M may have hoped, then this set is unlikely to attract the scalping problem seen with the Dalek & TARDIS sets. However, the inconsistent distribution and lack of an online offering will still see some collectors frustrated while tracking this down. I do assure you, for fans of the Classic era, it will be worth it. As expected, McFarlane have confirmed the 3rd Platinum Edition Chase variant from Wave 2 of their DC Multiverse Collector Edition figures as a repaint of Firestorm. The Chase variant features a deep red suit for Firestorm along with orange boots. The figure includes the same alternative hands and flame effects as the main release as well as the collectors card and stand. Platinum Edition figures are inserted into case quantities as a chase variant, so can be found in the wild. McFarlane are also using an online draw process through EQL for US collectors to be in with a chance of being able to purchase this version directly from the McFarlane Store. McFarlane have revealed another Jokerized Gold Label exclusive in their DC Multiverse line. Jokerized Batgirl is a Target US exclusive and features a batarang, grapnel launcher, and collector card with stand. Like all Jokerized releases, Batgirl also comes with a quartet of playing cards, with NECA now indicating that if you collect all their Jokerized releases these will combine into a full deck of cards. The figure is packed in the standard window box packaging and is a January 2024 release. A new NECA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze set featuring Keno in his Foot Clan training gear and a Foot Soldier has been listed on the Walmart website in the US, it was revealed on NECA's social channels soon after. The 2-pack will see Keno come with two head options as well as a punching bag, two sets of hands - one with gloves, one without - and training accessories. The included Foot Soldier, using the existing mold, features alternative hands and a TGRI cylinder. The item is available immediately. It is not however listed as a Walmart exclusive and is likely a 'fires to market' arrangement. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles return in the classic 1991 movie… with a little help from their friends! In TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze, the villainous Shredder plots his revenge with a stolen canister of mutagen. McFarlane's DC Multiverse Gold Label Animal Man is a Target US Exclusive. The figure will feature alternative hands for Animal Man as well as a non-articulated Wolverine figure. “Even Davros, your creator, is dead! You have no superiors, no inferiors, no reinforcements, no hope, no rescue!” The second batch of Doctor Who 5.5 inch collectors sets for B&M stores in the UK arrived in November 2023 and included a pair of History of the Daleks releases as well as the sole 3-pack of 2023. As the B&M History of the Daleks collectors set got closer to the 1988 Remembrance of the Daleks serial, there was a lot of speculation and rumination around the Daleks chosen to represent this anniversary story, particularly as it represents one of the most diverse sets of Daleks from the Classic era. Now we have reached that point, number 15 in the series, and despite a number of Dalek options to choose from the Character Options team has opted for one set only and has gone with the Renegade Dalek faction and new versions of the Renegade Dalek Drone and the Supreme Dalek. This may be disappointing to some who were hopeful for re-releases of the Imperial Drone, Special Weapons Dalek, or even Emperor Davros. The packaging, established for the 2023 anniversary year with the late Summer releases, remains in play with the usual sized History of the Dalek box now emblazoned with the 60th Anniversary logo and with a new colour coding scheme apparently in use. A purple secondary colour, applied over the white base of the box, is attributed to the 7th Doctor, and that era as well as the episode title are also called out on the box front and the two sides. The box also continues with the long-established inclusion of the gold ‘limited edition’ sticker in the bottom corner. Around the back of the box is the very extensive background for the 1988 story Remembrance of the Daleks as well as some further behind-the-scenes details regarding the Dalek props. This is very wordy but great for those interested in the inner workings of the serial and the Dalek props. The History of the Dalek sets continue to use an inner cardboard backing card - in the vortex blue design - onto which the figures are secured and then overlaid with a glued-on blister. That leaves no actual window in the box which does leave the edges easily feathered and damaged. The blister card also removes any option for collectors to open their sets and reseal them later. The Renegade Dalek Drone has been released twice previously in the Doctor Who line, first in 2010 in a 4-pack that also included the Renegade Dalek Supreme as well as the Special Weapons Dalek and Imperial Dalek Drone. The Renegade Drone would then be updated and released again in 2013 with the 7th Doctor and part of the Toys R Us Dalek & Doctor two packs. This third version in the B&M set for 2023 utilises the same base Classic Dalek body as every Classic Dalek released to date. The Drone is cast in hard plastic with a light grey base colour and overlaid black painted detail around the lower hemispheres, skirt, and mid-section. The band of central vents is cast in silver and overpainted with black on the solid panels, leaving the mesh infills in silver. This does leave a few slightly messy edges. The figure is finished with a smooth dome inclusive of two dark but translucent plastic headlights and the eyestalk. The eyestalk, gun, and manipulator arms are black plastic with silver detailing added to the rings around the eye stalk and the iris. It is worth mentioning at this point that our review copy included quite a visible gap at the front of the Dalek’s lower skirt where the two halves join together. This is only really an issue when viewed head-on, but is a disappointing lapse in quality control. The grey finish used on the 2023 model is much lighter than the previous versions. This doesn’t mean it is inaccurate as the original versions were probably too dark. When you look at what was on screen, in certain shots at least, this lighter grey is closer to the finish. The 2023 model also updates some component parts including a new two-step base, an updated gun arm without the ‘squeezed’ bit in the middle, and an updated eye stalk. It also features an updated panel between the gun and manipular arm with an oval design rather than the original circle. It does retain the same headlights as the previous releases and the midsection panels as seen on the 2013 update. Moving on to the Supreme Dalek, it is cast predominantly in black plastic with a particularly glossy finish. There is a silver midsection and silver rings around the neckpiece, while the trim at the top of the base and the hemispheres are painted over in silver. The Supreme sports a pair of orange translucent plastic headlights and silver cast gun and sucker arm, with the latter including the black sucker. The eye stalk is a black piece with white painted rings and a white iris. White over black is never a clean finish and these small areas both appear murky and dull. This 2023 version is only the second release of a Supreme Dalek from Remembrance, the first was from 2010 and was part of the same four-figure set as the Renegade Drone. This updated version sees a much glossier black finish across the figure vs the original as well as updated central panels & mesh, a new eye stalk, and a new gun - again losing the ‘squeezed’ in the centre weapon we’ve had for some time. Like the Drone, the panel between the gun and manipulator arm has also been changed to a fuller oval vs the more circular original release. Articulation remains standard to the classic era Daleks with both Drone and Supreme able to rotate their dome fully. They can also raise and lower the eye stalk within its sockets, while the gun and sucker arms have a wider breadth of movement with inserted ball joints into the central sockets. Across both figures, the plastic of these appendages is soft and they do warp easily in the box and on display. The Daleks also remain seated on small wheels within the base - both a play feature, but also lifting them ever so slightly off the floor which gives that levitating look. Putting aside what Dalek’s we have not yet got from Remembrance, this new two-pack provides a long-awaited re-release of the Renegade Supreme which has never been released in any format since a multipack in 2010. The inclusion of the Drone also marks only the third time this has been available, while both figures do have sufficient variations built into the decor and parts to not render the sought-after originals worthless. There are a few gripes, notably the soft plastic appendages that arrive warped, and the large visible gap on the front of the Drone which is more noticeable with the lighter grey paintwork. Like always, the sets are a one-shot and done so you will need to track them down now. The price of £21.99 in today’s market for action figures is competitive, but the B&M exclusivity coupled with distribution problems and no online offerings can make purchasing quite stressful. As seen with previous releases, there is generally enough to go around and stock will come in once the initial scalping dies down - don’t be tempted to pay excessive secondary market prices yet and reach out to fellow collectors to help where needed. NECA's release of Officer Murphy from Robocop was previewed at San Diego Comic-Con, and we now have the full details of the figure ahead of a release in 2024. Officer Murphy will feature a number of alternative parts including his 'blown off' hand, 'blown off' arm, and bullet-riddled vest. There are also three head options, alternative hands, and a pair of pistols. The figure is an Ultimate boxed release with an opening front flap. There will also be an extremely limited NECA Online Store exclusive bundle that will also include a replica Alex Murphy OCP ID Card signed by Peter Weller! This bundle is limited to just 475 units and goes on sale as of the 27th of November. Before he was a legend, he was Alex Murphy, dedicated OCP law enforcement officer! Even after his death at the hands of Boddicker's gang, he continues to serve and protect as RoboCop, law enforcement of the future. Some of the new Diamond Select action figure products previewed over the last few months have opened for preorders. Starting with their Invincible line, the first of these is a PX Previews exclusive set including a 7-inch Omni-Man figure along with an Invincible comic book, This is a December 2023 release. We then have the new figure of Rex-Splode, part of Series 4 of Diamond's Invincible line. Rex-Splode will include both masked and unmasked head options as well as energy-charged hands. Rex-Splode is joined in Series 4 by Mauler Twins, who also features two head options and is packed with an energy cannon accessory. These Series 4 figures are down for an August 2024 release. “Kenobi. Skywalker. Coruscant is under siege” In 2021, Lucasfilm celebrated its 50th Anniversary and to mark the occasion Hasbro developed and released a number of commemorative products within the Star Wars Black Series tied into the various Star Wars properties that Lucasfilm have released over the years. This ranged from the movies themselves to books & comics, and to the animated series. The line rolled over into 2022 and in the Spring of that year presented us with our first Star Wars Black Series figures from Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2003 Clone Wars animated series. Each of the 50th Anniversary figures was packed in special packaging, and for any figures that had an associated release at the time in the 3.75 inch Star Wars collections, Hasbro endeavoured to replicate this packaging giving us not only giving us more Kenner-inspired card backs, but also card backed figures from The Clone Wars and in this case the specific Tartakovsky versions. The cards are scaled up for the 6-inch series and are shaped with a Clone Trooper helmet design to one side. They are predominantly white in colour with black trim and a black Star Wars header logo. The character artwork, taken directly from the series, and the character name are an insert within the blister itself. The only variation to the original card is the addition of the Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary gold logo to the top right. Round the back we have the standard Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary timeline and background text as used on all of these 50th Anniversary badged products. Above this, we do also get more character art and background text with an accent colour applied to the top section of the card and appropriate in colour to the character with Mace Windu using a purple colour, reflective of his lightsaber blade. This Clone Wars release of Mace Windu uses the existing Windu figure as a base but with a number of tweaks and upgrades to reflect his look from the Tartakovsky series, albeit this Black Series version translated from the animated styling to a real-world setting. Mace is wearing his Jedi robes, the torso and legs a direct re-use from the original figure. The softer plastic skirt section has been replaced and is now more flared and dynamic. Each of these elements of the robe are cast in its base tan colour with no further paint apps save a white section added in the v-neck of the torso robes. Over the shoulders, we have a new Jedi Armour piece with shoulder armour. This is not, as expected, taken from the Obi-Wan Kenobi Clone Armoured figure but is new. It is a wider piece than Kenobi, giving Mace a broader look. It is cast in white plastic with black painted trim. The belt is taken from the Clone Trooper figure and applied around Mace’s waist. This is also a white cast with black details. The outfit is finalised with new forearm pieces, and these are also wider and bulkier than those used on General Kenobi. The whole outfit is then cloaked with a soft goods robe that is not removable and sits under the shoulder armour while also being attached in some way to the upper arms and pleated on the reverse. This allows it to sit more naturally around the figure, even when posed. The head is the same as used on all the Mace Windu releases. A good resemblance to Samuel L. Jackson with this Clone Wars version carrying some variances in the face print tech application. This new version is glossier than the original but in terms of which looks the best, that is very much open to interpretation by the collector. Mace features 18 points of articulation with an older configuration that includes pinned dual-jointed knees. The upper torso articulation is behind the soft goods robes, but does include butterfly shoulders with a number of lightsaber and force action poses available and the shoulder armour is hinged on a soft plastic tab to move with the arm and not to restrict it. All the joints are secure, but there is a slight concern over the ankle rocker cut which is not quite sufficient to pivot the feet forward leaving Mace prone to leaning and then falling backwards. The lightsaber included is the one from the original Mace Windu release and features a silver hilt with black and gold detailing. There is a small peg on the saber hilt which will line up to a socket on the left-hand side of Windu's belt for holstering - although the fit is not overly secure. The translucent purple blade is removable with a robust connection and no obvious sign of weakness or risk of snapping with limited pressure. The articulation supports a number of poses with single and two-handed options available. This is a nice update to Mace Windu which not only ticks the boxes for fans of the Clone Wars, but thanks to the real-world conversion Hasbro has done the figure also works really well in any Prequel era display, particularly with the larger selection of Clone Troopers we now have available. It is worth noting that an updated figure of Mace is incoming in 2024 as part of the Clones of the Republic sublime. This 2024 version will be part way between the original Jedi Windu and this General Windu coming with the armoured forearms but lacking the shoulder armour and outer robes.
