The Star Wars 'Gift the Galaxy' program has two new action figure reveals for us this week, starting with an exclusive Ahsoks series 2-pack featuring a Phase 1 Clone Trooper Lieutenant alongside a 332nd Clone Trooper. This set is based on flashback scenes from the Ahsoka series and is colour-coded as part of the Ahsoka Galaxy Collection series but not numbered. This is a Spring 2024 release and exclusive to Target in the US. Elsewhere it should be a Fan Channel exclusive. It is live for pre-order as of the 29th of November 2023. “Do You Think That What Makes Loki A Loki Is The Fact That We're Destined To Lose?” Sylvie was the third figure released in the Marvel Legends series and based on the first season of Loki on Disney+. She was part of the second Disney+ Wave of figures that also contained figures from What If? and included The Watcher as the Build-a-Figure. This 2021 release arrived in the standard Legends packaging with a window - dominated more by The Watcher BAF part than the Sylvie figure. The box artwork on each side, based on the character, was illustrated rather than drawn from footage or promo shots of the show. The rear of the box featured some brief background info on Sylvie, under which sat the checklist for The Watcher build-a-figure in relation to the other figures in the wave. Sylvie is wearing her dark green costume as seen during much of Loki Season 1, inspired in part by our universe Loki’s own outfit from his earlier appearances in Thor and Avengers. The bulk of the body is cast in deep grey plastic with sculpted detailing more or less exclusively on the torso where we find some green and bronze paint detailing to bring out the various panels and sculpted lines. Arms and legs are quite non-descript as are the ankle boots and fingerless gloves - all in very similar, if not the same, shade of deep grey. A belt is also provided, cast as a separate piece, and applied around the waist so as to move with the articulation. This is sadly the same boring grey with zero paint application despite the sculpted buckles that were crying out for a metallic finish. The figure arrives overlaid with Sylvie’s cloak. This is a softer plastic piece cast in green and shaped to wrap around the figure and over the majority of the upper arms. It includes some flowing folds and creases as well as a folded back hood around the back. The only variation in the deep green finish is a lighter green paint application at the collar. In situ, the cloak does give Sylvie a better overall look with the green of the cloak contrasting with the grey of her outfit. It does however seem to push the figure into a hunched pose pushing the head and torso forward. The cloak is removable, which presents the figure with more articulation options but does not flatter Sylvie aesthetically. Without the cloak, the proportions don’t quite look right leaving our Loki variant very gangly in the arms and legs and with a neckpiece sitting a bit too high. The head sculpt is a reasonable likeness to Sophia Di Martino without reaching the heights we have seen on some other recent female MCU figures like Mantis, Okoye, Scarlet Witch, and Jane Foster. Photo real paint decor is applied to add detailing to the eyes and lips, but little else considering it is working with a very smooth complexion. Sylvie is wearing her crown with one of the two horns snapped off as seen in the show. This is painted in gold. The head is finished off with the hair piece which is cast individually to the head in a yellow plastic with some darker blonde tone added for texture, The individual strands in softer plastic that hang down the side of the head are a nice addition. Sylvie features an alternative pair of hands allowing you to alternate as you wish between a left hand ‘magic casting’ hand, a right clenched fist, and a pair of gripping hands for use with the included sword. These all swap in and out without fuss. They are very much black cast pieces with painted flesh fingers, and that does leave a dirty finish to the flesh where it can’t quite cover the base black. The open spell-casting hand looks larger than the others, and with Hasbro not including a green translucent magic piece (which was readily available in the line) it does lack context. The sword does provide much better display potential, cast with a bronze and jade hilt with visible ornate detailing, and a metallic jade green blade. This will fit in either of Sylvie’s hands ready to strike down He Who Remains, or anyone else who gets in her way. Wielding of the sword is supported by 20 points of articulation - all pinless - and includes a boot cut swivel over and above the usual configuration, but she is lacking in any butterfly shoulders. With the cape discarded the posing options are extensive with full motion in the arms and legs supported by the torso joint and neck articulation. The cape will restrict these considerably once applied, pulling the arms back into the body and holding back the leg movement a touch. Sylvie as a figure release is relatively average across most metrics. The costume is reasonably accurate to the show but lacks depth with limited paint apps and very much grey on grey on grey. The cloak does enhance the look - without it, Sylvie's proportions are just right - but using the cloak does restrict much of the movement, pinning the arms at her side and restricting the legs within the wrap of the cloak's lower edge. Considering Sylvie’s look going into Season 2 has not changed massively, we are probably unlikely to see an update at any point - but those who do want to add Sylvie to your collection should be able to find and buy her at lower than RRP pricing considering what appears to be buyers apathy for her and much of the Watcher BAF wave. Definitely worth a purchase at sub £20 and she certainly looks more at home posed with a group, alongside the released figures of Loki, Morbius, and He Who Remains. After much speculation and a few leaks, the 7th wave of McFarlane's Warhammer 40k line has been revealed and will land on store shelves in January 2024. Wave 7 will feature standard figures of a Space Wolves Wolf Guard and a World Eater Khorne Bezerker Chaos Marine, both coming with an alternative pair of hands, Bolter and Power Axe. They are joined by a Megafig Ultramarine Terminator with a Storm Bolter. Each figure is also going to be released as an unpainted 'Artist Proof' with the World Eater featuring a different head sculpt and a Power Sword. Wave 7 also sees a redesign of the packaging removing the hanging tab from the box and going with a revised silver and white box with a side panel using the chapter colour of the Marines along with impressive rear artwork from the Warhammer 40k source material that will also be replicated on collectible cards within the box. They are the elite veterans of the Space Wolves. To be a member of this select brotherhood is to wield the very deadliest weapons of war while serving as the personal guard of their Wolf Lord. The McFarlane DC Multiverse release of Steel from The Reign of the Supermen has opened for pre-orders ahead of a release in February 2024. The figure features Steel and his hammer along with the usual circular stand and collectors card A former weapons engineer, John Henry Irons moved to Metropolis to start a new life. Four new MAFEX figures from Medicom have opened for pre-orders across MAFEX stockists. They include two new versions of Robocop - one from the original 1987 movie, and the other from Robocop 2. The 1987 version features alternative face plates and hands, his Auto-9 weapon with thigh holster parts and muzzle effects, and damaged helmet and chest plate. The Robocop 2 version looks to be very much the same figure and parts with a variant paint job - but this version also features Cain's brain as an accessory. There is then a new Star Wars Luke Skywalker figure from the Imperial Cruiser scenes in The Mandalorian. Luke will feature his soft goods cloak, lightsaber hilt, and two lightsaber blades. And the quartet is completed with a new comic book Riddler figure from DC's Batman: Hush series. The Riddler includes two heads, alternative hands, a stack of cash, a bag, and his cane. The Robocop figures are listed as due for release in Quarter 1 of 2024 (Jan-March) while Luke Skywalker and The Riddler have a November 2024 release date. McFarlane have announced a special Movie Maniacs Gold Label Exclusive from the classic Christmas Comedy, National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. The 6 inch posed figurine features Clark Griswold installing his Christmas lights. He stands on a diorama base and comes with a cardboard backdrop for display. From the 20th to the 25th of November we are marking this milestone event with some Doctor Who Action figure reviews as well as taking a look back across the full 60-year history of the series and the various action figures that Character Toys have produced since 2005, immortalising the Doctor and his foes in 5.5 inch action figure format. Our first stop is with the First and Second Doctors as we cover 1963 to 1969 and the black-and-white eras of William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton. The action figures from this era include both First and Second Doctors, as well as the early appearances from the show of the iconic Daleks and Cyberman. As we move into the 1970's the Doctor Who serials regenerated into Colour TV and saw Jon Pertwee 1970-1974 and then Tom Baker 1974-1981 take control of the TARDIS. Both Doctors have seen multiple releases & costumed across the Character line. The 1970s saw the introduction of The Master and Davros, as well as the first multi-doctor story with the 10th anniversary serial, the Three Doctors. We were also introduced to new foes including the Axons, Omega, the Giant Robot, and Magnus Greel - but also new allies including the regular appearances of UNIT as well as new companions including Jo Grant, Sarah-Jane Smith, Leela, and K9. Tom Baker's 4th Doctor also took us into the 1980's and was then replaced by Peter Davison from 1981-1984 followed by Colin Baker's 6th Doctor from 1984-1986 at which point the series was put on a temporary hiatus. During this period the Doctor revisited old foes like the Daleks and new ones like the sinister Shard Jek. We were introduced to new companion Peri and also enjoyed more multi-doctor stories including the 20th Anniversary story, The Five Doctors, and Colin Baker's The Two Doctors. The seventh Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, was brought to reinvigorate the series and ran from 1987 to 1989 before the BBC finally decided to cancel the series fully. The McCoy era is the one I associate most with, and from which some of my favourite Doctor Who figures are drawn - particularly the Imperial Dalek faction with Emperor Davros and his Special Weapons Dalek, and the very shiny Silver Nemesis Cyberman. And so we waited until 1996 for the next installment of Who when a joint venture between the BBC and Fox in the US gave us the TV movie, and Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor. Paul would go on to be a big part of the Big Finish audio adventures - alongside the other surviving Doctors - that filled the void for fans between 1998 and the series 'regeneration' in 2005. After a 9-year break, Doctor Who returned in 2005 with the 9th Doctor as played by Christopher Eccleston. We were also introduced to Rose and Captain Jack Harkness as well as the redesigned Daleks alongside a raft of new aliens such as the Slitheen, Cassandra, Jabe, and the Moxx of Balhoon. Eccleston would only remain as the Doctor for a single season, handing over the TARDIS key to David Tennant as of the 2005 Christmas Special, and Tennant's 10th Doctor would remain at the helm from 2005-2010 across four seasons and a number of specials. During his time on the show, we saw the return of the Cybermen and The Master as well as meeting the Ood, the Clockwork Men, Scarecrows, Pig Slaves, Vashta Nerada, and the very frightening Weeping Angels. Tennant's era also kicked off both the long-running Action Figure series by Character that now spans 18 years, and also a number of spin-off shows including the Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood. These shows also spun off their own action figures with Character creating a small line of Sarah Jane Adventure figures, while Sci-Fi Collector created a line of complementary Torchwood Collector figures. Tennant exited the role of the Doctor in 2010 handing over to Matt Smith and the 11th Doctor. The 11th Doctor era ran from 2010-2013 and with him came the new companions of Amy Pond, Rory, and then Clara. We also met historic figures like Churchill and saw a redesign of the Daleks first to a WW2 paint job and then a full change to the Paradigm Daleks. Other notable foes included the Silence and the return of the Silurians. It was Matt Smith's 11th Doctor who took us into the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who alongside returning Doctors such as the 8th Doctor's minisode, and then the return of David Tennant and Tom Baker in the 50th Anniversary story - along with the introduction of John Hurt's War Doctor who would go on to have further adventures in the Big Finish series. The 11th Doctor's tenure would come to a close not long after the 50th Anniversary and we went into the 12th Doctor era alongside Peter Capaldi who remained in charge of the TARDIS between 2014-2017. The 12th Doctor era was relatively barren for 5.5 inch action figures with Character moving to a smaller 3.75 inch scale but we did see a few key characters released including multiple versions of the Doctor alongside Missy - the latest incarnation of The Master - and new companion Bill Potts. The series also revisited a few old favourites too including Davros and the Daleks. The 13th Doctor, Jodie Whittaker, took over from Capaldi in 2018 after the latter had regenerated in the 2017 Christmas special. The 13th Doctor era would span another 3 series as well as a handful of specials, running between 2018-2022. The Whitaker era introduced the concept of a group of companions - not really seen since the time of the 5th Doctor. A short resurgence in general release 5.5 inch action figures brought us releases of Yaz, Graham, and Ryan as well as the Doctor herself and a redesigned Dalek from the 2019 New Year special. The 13th Doctor would exit the series in late 2022, ahead of the build-up to the 60th Anniversary. While a new Doctor had been announced as Ncuti Gatwa, the role of the 14th Doctor was a surprise return of David Tennant who will now steer the show through 2023 and the 60th Anniversary specials - handing over to Gatwa's 15th Doctor for Christmas 2023.
