“Peter, it's me. Flint Marko. Do you remember?” The 2021 release of Spider-Man: No Way Home was shrouded in a lot of secrecy ahead of its release due to the number of returning characters that appeared in the movie as cameos, or as key characters. This meant that Hasbro was a little restricted by the Marvel Legends releases to coincide with the December release to a figure of Doctor Strange and two versions of Spider-Man himself, both as seen in the trailers. Following the movie, there was a huge clamoring for many more figures from the movie and it has taken a full 2 years to finally bring the next batch of Spider-Man: No Way Home figures to store shelves. The Marvel Legends ‘No Way Home’ wave is dedicated to movie figures and goes down a similar track as the Across the Spiderverse releases by packing the figures onto blister cards and doing away with a build-a-figure option. The cards themselves are beautiful featuring a deep blue Spider-Suit-inspired backing overlaid with a bright gold panel that acts as the backing colour for the figure in its blister as well as depicting scenes from No Way Home with the three Peter Parkers. The movie logo sits above the blister while the Marvel Legends logo as well as the character name sits bottom left. Round the back is a repeat of the image of the three Peters, expanded now to show them on the scaffold of the Statue of Liberty and headed by the movie logo as though it were a movie poster. The standard Marvel Legends principle of a short character overview is then listed to the left of the card back. The decision to card this wave does mean there is no way of opening the figures without damaging the packaging in some way. Sandman did not come over well in the promo images for this wave, but in hand, I am pleased to say he is much more impressive. The figure is a full new sculpt and this is done so with a sand texture throughout including what can best be described as ‘absorbing’ sand at the side of both feet. The base colour is of course a sandy brown, the whole figure cast in the same colour. Definition, depth, and weathering are achieved by the use of at least two further brown tones applied around key areas of body definition such as the chest, stomach, legs, and arms - this doesn’t extend fully to the rear of the figure. The lack of a defined waist is what threw me about the promo images, it is still something that doesn’t quite look right and a waist cut joint may have helped. The head sculpt is impressive and a strong likeness to the CGI recreation of actor Thomas Haden Church from No Way Home. The face uses the same sand texture as the body, so much so that it is unlikely this can or will be repainted to a flesh tone for a Flint Marko release. The depth of sculpt, and the applied shading, gives definition to the eyes and to that prominent eyebrow ridge, as well as around the nose and mouth. Sandman is a fully pinless body and is articulated across 18 points. The knees and elbows remain double-jointed and he also retains the thigh swivel which is being phased on on some of Hasbro’s other lines. As we’ve mentioned, there is no waist cut - only a torso ball joint - and there is also only a single neck joint although that works better aesthetically considering there is no collar. There are no obvious butterfly shoulders, but these are not missed. Sandman is very easy to pose with no encumbering parts that restrict movement. He can sit, kneel, crouch, and extend his arms in nearly every direction. The arm movement is perhaps the critical element of the figure as the accessories are all themed around his use of his powers to create weapons from his body. The figure comes with a pair of clenched fists and a second pair of open, gripping hands. The real winners though are the two enormous hands supported by a wrist overlay that bridges the gap between the slimmer forearms and the exaggerated hands. The engineering is flawless and the hands and forearm pieces all swap in and out without a hitch. Both of these larger hands are sculpted in an open grip, a part of me would have perhaps also wanted to see a clenched fist version. Doing a fully sand-coloured Sandman - as per No Way Home - was a brave decision for Hasbro when something more aligned to the comic book releases of Flint Marko may have been an option basing the figure more around the Spider-Man 3 appearance than the CGI No Way Home look. This execution won’t please everyone particularly as Sandman is essentially a naked figure complete with sculpted abs, and buttocks. The sculpting itself is to a good standard, as is the sand texture finish and the paintwork. The head sculpt is glorious and the swap out hand parts are fun. I do however wonder what a Deluxe version would have given us in terms of display options to make Flint more menacing. The packaging change away from the classic Legends boxes isn’t too much of a big deal as the MCU releases have always fluctuated in places. The lack of a BAF will also drive disparity in shopping, with many focusing on the three Peter Parker releases and most likely leaving other characters to peg warm - including a BAF of someone like Lizard would have perhaps smoothed out the sales. Sandman, in my opinion, is a recommended purchase in so much that he is unlikely to get any do-overs any time soon and is a key part of building up the No Way Home collection of villains alongside the incoming releases of Goblin and Doc Ock. We just have to hope Hasbro can complete the set and bring us Lizard and Electro to finish the collection. A trio of new McFarlane DC Multiverse releases that have been previewed over the last week or so have now opened for pre-order. We start with Nightwing from Batman: Knightfall. He features a set of alternative hands and the usual circular base and collectors card. He is a January 2024 release. Also arriving in January is the DC Classics Superman. He will come with alternative hands, a collectors card, and a flight stand. We then have the 2-pack of Bizarro and Batzarro, two new figures with alternative hands and a diorama base. Hasbro's December 7th Fan First Livestream for G.I, Joe collectors revealed several new items heading to the Classified series for release in 2024. None of these were brand-new reveals, and they had all been revealed at some point in 2023 as digital renders. The figures unveiled fully and that now have a confirmed release include four general releases of Quick Kick, the Cobra Techno Ciper, Airbourne, and Big Boa. There are also the Retro carded releases of Recondo, Duke, and Scarlet, and the new 60th Anniversary carded figures of the Wetsuit Trooper and Camo Trooper. These all appear to be general releases in the US. Here in the UK, Hasbro are only supplying this line exclusively via their own Hasbro Pulse online store. The majority of these figures are April 2024 releases apart from the Quick Kick and Big Boa who are down for May 2024, and the Recon Diver who is listed for July 2024. While there were no images for future figures incoming for the line, the event did name check four new characters in the works as Starduster, Nemesis Immortal, Zandar, and Leatherneck. “I would never choose to bring anybody into this.” Carol Danvers is not short of Marvel Legends releases having picked up four different variations in 2019 when she debuted in her solo origin story, and getting a fifth on the back of her Avengers: Endgame appearance. This sixth MCU Carol Danvers Captain Marvel is part of a trio of releases from The Marvels. The movie had been pushed back from its original Summer release slot into November, putting the figures onto shelves a good 4 months ahead of the movie. Unlike Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, The Marvels did not receive a full wave of figures - nor did we get a MCU Build-a-Figure like Quatumania. The figures were released within a comic book themed wave with four other comic book based figures and a 'Totally Awesome' Hulk build-a-figure. The 'Totally Awesome' Hulk BAF wave was in production before the reversal to window boxes so arrives in plastic-free packaging with the figure illustrated on the front and back, with the BAF checklist moving to the left-hand spine, leaving the right to carry the character illustration. The box design remains standard with the scooped sides, hanging tab, and black base colour - while specific elements for The Marvels include the logo, the blue energy background for the figure art, and some gold, blue, red, and white tramlines offset to the main panel - paying homage to each of the main characters. While the other two figures in the Marvels wave, Ms. Marvel and Photon, are wearing the outfit created for them on Aladna the Captain Marvel release is based on her outfit from the first half of the movie. This is similar in styling to the original Captain Marvel figures - but is a new sculpt cast in the main in blue plastic with sculpted suit lines and panels, but with paint is pretty limited to the red painted top panel of her uniform and the gold linings around the chest, shoulder and the central sculpted star emblem. Even boots and belts are left in the exact same blue colour, but do get a touch more gold trimming. The forearms are sculpted with the shorter sleeve look with flesh-coloured paint applied over the blue for the forearms and again at the fingers for her fingerless gloves. The new head sculpt is an improvement on those that have gone before and is a reasonable likeness to actor Brie Larson. It uses the now standard facial print tech to apply eyes and mouth in particular and like Photon, Captain Marvel is provided with a neutral stoic expression. The hair is an additional piece with included sculpted braids and ties but left in the base sandy blonde colour with no additional washes or highlights. Captain Marvel is provided with two sets of hands that can clip in and out with relative ease. The first set includes a gripping left hand and a right hand in more of a claw shape. You then also get a pair of clenched fists. While powered effects were skipped completely for Photon and Ms. Marvel, the Captain does get a re-used set of those flexible ‘powered’ arm wrap pieces that we have seen used repetitively on magic or powered characters - most recently the new Scarlet Witch and Clea figures. These are cast in a translucent yellow and wrap the forearms neatly intertwining the hands where required for a powered-up effect. Articulation is fully pinless and includes 18 points in total. There are no butterfly shoulders to speak of nor is the neck dual articulated, but we do get a good range of motion in the arms and legs with no cumbersome cloaks, skirts, or armour to hold Carol back when posing. She also stands pretty well despite the slim wedge-heeled boots and can also be placed into flying poses with an appropriate after-market stand. Like Photon and Ms. Marvel from the same wave and movie, Captain Marvel does enough without doing anything spectacular to set her apart. It's quite a lazy release with limited paint and articulation and while it looks and poses OK it is not to the standard of some other more recent releases like Scarlet Witch from the Multiverse of Madness, or Agatha from WandaVision. The outfit choice is also a bit disappointing - although I am sure Hasbro made the decision based on the movie poster. I would personally much rather have had Carol in her latter updated costume with the larger star emblem and red midsection that would then be relative to the Aladna costumes worn by Photon and Ms. Marvel. “Oh my God. We’re a team” Despite only making her MCU debut in 2022, this is already the second Ms. Marvel figure in the Marvel Legends MCU series. This time round it was part of a trio of releases from The Marvels. The movie had been pushed back from its original Summer release slot into November, putting the figures onto shelves a good 4 months ahead of the movie. Unlike Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, The Marvels did not receive a full wave of figures - nor did we get an MCU Build-a-Figure like Quatumania. The figures were released within a comic-book themed wave with four other comic-book based figures and a 'Totally Awesome' Hulk build-a-figure. Ms. Marvel arrives in the costume that she is given on Aladna ahead of the finale of The Marvels back on Earth. The body is mostly cast red plastic overpainted with blue and gold detailing. The skirt section is a softer plastic sitting over a generic waist section and shaped down over the legs. A similar approach is taken with the scarf which sits around Ms. Marvel’s neck and flows down, with some shaping, down her back. The blues are neatly painted, while the gold is perhaps not as vibrant as we’d like and looks a little patchy in places. The Kree bracelet, sculpted onto the left forearm, is also quite dull with a mix of gold and green and with no other real details While the other Marvels figures are given a neutral facial expression, Ms. Marvel has been sculpted with a smile on her face. I understand why this decision has been made considering the way Kamala Khan plays through the movie, but as we saw when they tried this with Ant-Man it does actually throw off the likeness to Iman Vellani. Everything else is there for the face with a good level of detail in the eyes accentuated with the facial printing. The hair too isn’t quite right, sitting too close around her face and with a more centralised parting. It also lacks any depth with no added paint apps over the base cast plastic colouring. Kamala comes with two pairs of hands, there is a pair that includes a clenched fist on one side and a gripping hand on the other. We then get a pair with fingers outstretched - but like Photon lack any accessories or effects to recreate Ms. Marvel’s light powers. Instead, Ms. Marvel comes backed with a Flerkin complete with its mouth open and tendrils extended. This is not Goose, which in a way is a shame, and rather a non-descript grey cat that is almost cartoon-like in its proportions. It is cast in grey plastic with the only paint applied to the eyes in green. The tentacles are a vibrant pink with segmented sculpting. The piece is not articulated and is designed to free stand with a flat base to the seated cat, and a further flat base to the lowest tentacle. Sadly these do not line up and the tentacle sits lower than the cat which leads the piece to tip to one side or to fall over completely. Articulation comes in at 18 points, with pinless joints across the board and good use of double-jointed knees and elbows to extend the range of motion. We do lack any butterfly shoulders and only have a single neck joint and a single torso joint. The legs are partly obstructed by the skirt, while the upper bicep joint is a flat cut and not shaped like normal leading to some ugly arm aesthetics when posed. The lines of the costume also go out of line very quickly during posing particularly the arms and the central torso. Ms. Marvel was always a given for a Marvels MCU wave considering she shares the lead role with Monica and Captain Marvel. The figure is a pretty faithful recreation of her final costume but lacks some finesse in the finish with dull gold patches throughout. The head sculpt, and its smiling expression is a choice that won’t please everyone, and it does throw off the overall likeness - an alternative head may have been the better option. I would have also sacrificed the weak Flerkin figurine for an extra head, and/or some light power effects to add some dynamics when posing Kamala. Combined with the other two MCU figures from the wave, the movie poster can be recreated to a decent degree and this trio then becomes a bit more than the sum of its parts. NECA have released the full details and gallery for their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ultimate Leonardo 7-inch scale figure from The Last Ronin. The figure will come with two head options, alternative hands, throwing knives, and katanas. He is packed in a closed box with an opening front cover. He should ship in March 2024. From the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book series, The Last Ronin! In a future NYC far different than the one we know today; a lone surviving Turtle goes on a seemingly hopeless mission to obtain justice for his fallen family and friends. Based on issue #3 of the comic, the Leonardo figure stands in 7” scale with over 20 points of articulation, and includes two interchangeable head sculpts, interchangeable hands, katanas, and five throwing knives that fit into the figure’s belt. Following the full listing of their Leonardo figure, NECA have released the full detail for another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Last Ronin figure in the shape of Splinter. This Ultimate release of Splinter will feature alternative hands and forearms, a sword with sheath, and Splinter's walking cane. The figure is packed into the usual closed Ultimate collector box with opening front cover. Like Leonardo, Splinter is live for pre-order at the NECA Store as of the 5th of December. The figures do not appear to be exclusive, but rather a first to market offering via NECA before the listings go up at other stockists. It is due for a March 2024 release.
