“The truth is a matter of circumstances; it's not all things to all people all the time.” The first curated releases from the Marvel Cinematic Universe outside of the main Legends waves came in 2018. The ‘First Ten Years’ sets marked the 10th Anniversary of the MCU and went on to fill several gaps in our collections with figures like Red Skull, Yellow Jacket, Crossbones, and more. The series was then renamed the 80th Anniversary series in 2019 and here, alongside comic book releases, we saw more new releases including Skurge, Ghost, and Peggy Carter. 2020's releases saw a switch to the Fox movies and a set of releases celebrating both the original X-Men movies and Deadpool. And then finally in 2021, these annual releases evolved again into the Infinity Saga collection, a series of figures celebrating the first three phases of the MCU and including a mix of re-releases, and new characters such as Quicksilver, Odin, and Obadiah Stane. The Infinity Saga would go on to skip 2022 but returned in 2023 with a set of 8 figures from the first full arc of the MCU. The packaging’s square box shape is consistent with all the movie releases dating back to 2018, while the design for the Infinity Saga established in 2021 is continued with a black window box, reflective side artwork - which is the same on every released - and the use of the movie logo on the box front, and the movie poster on the rear alongside a small piece of supporting text. Black Widow is the first of two figures in the 2023 Infinity Saga Series taken from Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The Winter Soldier Black Widow dates back to the very infancy of the MCU figures within Marvel Legends as we know them today, and despite being 10 years old our new 2023 version is pretty much a direct re-release of that 2014 release of Natasha, albeit with some tweaks and updated paint decor. The core of the Black Widow we receive the same as was packed into the Winter Soldier wave in 2014 and this does feature some of the more exaggerated body proportions that Legends were following at that point, applying comic book proportions to MCU real world set figures. Black Widow arrives in her black suit as seen in Winter Soldier, and prior to that in the first Avengers movie. It is cast in black with paint apps limnited to some silver on her two belts, zipper and a ring at the base of her wrist stingers. This is less decor than we saw on the 2014 version which also featured painted clasps on the thigh holsters and a more defined central zipper. The proportions mentioned early present in the very slim waist and very shapely hips neither of which are fully accurate to Scarlet Johannson in costume. The figure retains the glued on belt with guns sculpted into the holster - there has been no attempt to update these to a working version. The arms are definitely updated from the original with a small painted S.H.I.E.L.D. logo on the right arm, updated articulation, and removable stinger devices at the wrists. We get both head sculpts as seen in the 2014 release, a long haired version accurate to The Winter Soldier, and a shorter one that was a nod to her Avengers appearance. Neither head is changed in terms of sculpting, but does now feature facial printing which improves both of them no end and also shows how good the base sculpting was when these heads were first produced. Both heads swap in and out of the neck peg easily with a small amount of force, and the auburn hair pieces are designed to flow onto and in the case of the longer haired version over Black Widow’s shoulders. Also included with the Black Widow release are two sets of hands. The clenched fists were not part of the 2014 release, nor used for Age of Ultron when the figure got a repaint. I think they may originate with the Yelena Belova figure from 2021. We then get the original gripping hands which include an extended trigger finger. These are used to wield the twin pistols also included in the set, and also taken from the Yelena Belova release. This is both a nice addition, but also annoying when you have pistols to fit in Widow’s hands, but also a fixed pair on her hip. The fit into the gripping hands is poor, and Widow would have benefited from bringing over the shooting hands from Yelena to hold the guns more securely. The final accessory is a pair of blue translucent effect pieces designed to replicate the electric shock feature of Widow’s wrist stingers. Again, these are donated from a prior set - namely the Black Widow in white suit from the 2021 Black Widow movie. These slot in by removing the hands, slipping off the removable stinger wrist section, and then engaging the effect. These work fine, but won’t be too everyone’s liking for display purposes. Moving onto articulation and this remains broadly the same as 2014 with 18 points in total. The updated arms does now provide a pinless double jointed elbow which vastly improves arm movement although the shoulders still project the arms some distance out from the body. The legs are the same with pinned double joint knees. The wedged boots and slightly misaligned ankle rockers make Black Widow really difficult to stand. There is no doubt that Black Widow was very much in need of an updated figure from her earlier MCU appearances like Winter Soldier and of course Avengers. Sadly, this release does not go far enough to make this the definitive Black Widow for your Infinity Saga collection. It really needed a full body update and new articulation to help it pose and stand, as well as enhancements to the hands and a belt with working holsters. There is no denying the updated decor to the heads looks great, and I welcome the updated arms, it just doesn’t go far enough. Widow has been selling well in the wave regardless of these issues and this shows her popularity, and no doubt driven by the realism that this is probably be the last Natasha we will see in the Cinematic Legends line with Hasbro perhaps calling time on her Infinity Saga appearances with this improved, but limited update. The new Infinity Saga 2023 release of Captain America in his Stealth Suit from The Winter Soldier is, like Black Widow from the same wave, made using a base figure from 2014. The body is that of the original Stealth Suit release, a figure that is showing its age in places. The very earlier MCU Legends of 2014 carried with them a little of the comic book proportions that we saw in the other Legends releases, this means our Stealth Suit cap is a little bit slim in the waist, and broad in the chest. Cap has also always suffered from a height problem and like all Cap’s to date, this re-release is still much shorter than the Thor and Iron-Man figures from the exact same wave. The Stealth Suit is done pretty well with a dark blue plastic base over which are painted the silver details of the chest. Incorporated into these silver details are the S.H.I.E.L.D. logo on the right shoulder, a small but intricate Stars and Stripes flag on the left, and the ‘Rogers’ wording. The legs feature a red painted stripe down the side, with the boots finished in two tones of brown using a lighter tone for the straps. Hands are fingerless brown gloves, while a belt in the same colour is an individual piece attached round the waist with some movement up and down as you pose Cap. There are two heads included, one masked and the other unmasked. The masked head is not the original 2014 release and is taken from the newer Cap figures and is the same as the ‘Worthy’ Cap from Endgame. The visible elements of the face are a good likeness to Chris Evans and facial printing is still used to pick out the eyes even though they sit behind the mask section. There are certainly more than one component to the head with the mask appearing to be an individual piece slotted down onto the lower head. This means there is a risk of misalignment and the head I received certainly has the eyes sat very low compared to the mask vs other reviews I’ve seen that are more central. The unmasked head I think is new, or at least reworked. It is probably the best Evans likeness to date and is aged appropriately to his time filming The Winter Soldier with a hairpiece updated to be lighter than we see later on towards the end of the Infinity Saga. Facial printing enhances the sculpt and there is a clean finish to the head without any glossy plastic or paint bleed between the head and hair thanks to the individual hair pieces we are now seeing. The unmasked head is larger than the masked head and some may find it a bit oversized on the Stealth Suit body. Cap has no alternative hands and comes only with his Shield. This is not from the original release but is a repaint of one of the newer shields complete with lines and rivets in the central star. The shield is cast in blue with silver paint added, and both are given a hue that is almost metallic - probably more pearlescent. The finish is not quite as nice as the original which had much cleaner colouring and finish. Round the back we have two brown fitted straps that engage over either of Steve’s arms to hold the shield in place. Articulation is pinned, and that does carry with it some aesthetic issues, particularly in the legs where the red stripe is broken by a visible blue pin. There are 21 points of articulation in total, including an extra boot cut swivel. The knees and elbows are double-jointed, while the torso features both a waist swivel and a full ab-crunch. Cap is easy to pose and all the joints move easily into position and hold any pose given to them. Working with the shield is a little harder with the strap sitting over the elbow joint, but there remains a good level of options for displaying Cap with the shield. Like Black Widow from the same wave and same movie, this Winter Soldier Cap was long overdue a rework considering the enhancements in the figures since 2014. What we get is a partial upgrade with new head sculpts, but on an older body that remains undersized against the wider MCU collection and has some comic book proportions. A newer body would have been ideal, but cost-prohibitive in a sub-line of the Legends series that now seems more aligned to repaints and tweaks than bridging us any brand-new figures. The unmasked head is the highlight of the set and may also present an upgrade option to other Cap figures. The new Marvel Legends Exclusive of Captain America from Secret Empire was first previewed in December 2023. Now, courtesy of overseas retailer RobotKingdom, we now have more images for the figure including packaging shots for the front and rear of the box. Revealed initially through Looper.com and then via Hasbro's PR team, we have our first look at the Star Wars Black Series Mandalorian Nite Owl female figure that we were told was in the pipeline. This Mandalorian Season 3 Nite Owl utilises the female Mandalorian body used on figures like Bo-Katan and Koska Reeves. This generic figure does not feature a removable helmet and is armed with a single blaster which also fits into a working holster. The figure is a US Walmart exclusive and opened for pre-order on the first day of the Walmart Collector Con on 14th of March. It is a July 2024 release. Outside of the US this is sold via the Fan Channel including Hasbro Pulse/ A male version of the Nite Owl Mandalorian warrior is incoming also as a Target US exclusive. Medicom has teased two new MAFEX releases from The Boys (Amazon Prime) with teaser images of new figures of The Deep and Soldier Boy. McFarlane has announced a new Justice League of America 'build a figure' wave opening for pre-order as of the 13th of March 2024 and with a May 2024 release date. The JLA Wave includes four figures with JLA versions of Aquaman, Superman, Batman, and John Stewart Green Lantern. If you collect all four, you then get parts to build a fifth figure of Plastic Man - including alternative 'plastic stretched' body parts. Jazwares has revealed a new Target Exclusive release of the N-1 Naboo Starfighter in their Star Wars Micro Galaxy Squadron line. The Starfighter Class release features mini-figures of Anakin Skywalker and R2-D2 from The Phantom Menace. It is down for an April 7th 2024 release. There are no details of a release outside of the US with ongoing international availability on this line limited at best. “I know you seek vengeance as much as I do.” The first curated releases from the Marvel Cinematic Universe outside of the main Legends waves came in 2018. The ‘First Ten Years’ sets marked the 10th Anniversary of the MCU and went on to fill several gaps in our collections with figures like Red Skull, Yellow Jacket, Crossbones, and more. The series was then renamed the 80th Anniversary series in 2019 and here, alongside comic book releases, we saw more new releases including Skurge, Ghost, and Peggy Carter. 2020's releases saw a switch to the Fox movies and a set of releases celebrating both the original X-Men movies and Deadpool. And then finally in 2021, these annual releases evolved again into the Infinity Saga collection, a series of figures celebrating the first three phases of the MCU and including a mix of re-releases, and new characters such as Quicksilver, Odin, and Obadiah Stane. The Infinity Saga would go on to skip 2022 but returned in 2023 with a set of 8 figures from the first full arc of the MCU. The packaging’s square box shape is consistent with all the movie releases dating back to 2018, while the design for the Infinity Saga established in 2021 is continued with a black window box, reflective side artwork - which is the same on every released - and the use of the movie logo on the box front, and the movie poster on the rear alongside a small piece of supporting text. The release of a Dark World Thor as part of the 2023 Infinity Saga series is a little odd considering a Dark World Thor was created for the 2018 First Ten Years collection. While there have been enhancements over the past 5-years, there are certainly other figures that would have benefitted more from inclusion - particularly Thor himself who still lacks any new Legends format figures from his first movie, or from the first Avengers outing. This new Dark World Thor is a complete re-use of the body from the 2018 version. This body is well-proportioned for Thor with muscular arms and legs against a solid-looking torso, overlaid with armour. It is however very tall when displayed with other Legends - standing a good half a head taller than the Mk2 Iron-Man from the same wave, while dwarfing the Captain America and Black Widow. The decor feels more muted than the original releases and we have a dulled-back bronze look to the armour with a hint of blue trim around the waist and some red in the bracers. The cloak extends from the armour and flows down the back of Thor as a softer plastic piece. It is not painted at all, but is textured - differently on the inside vs the outer cape - and the light this texture captures adds definition. Thor features two head sculpts and I am pretty certain these are both different from the 2018 version or very heavily re-worked. The first is a neutral-looking Thor, while the second is a smiling Thor which doesn’t for me fit too well in terms of the story of The Dark World itself. Both heads are an improvement on the previous version, but they are still not absolutely perfect likenesses to Chris Hemsworth even with the latest face print application. The neutral version is the better of the two, particularly viewed from off-centre. The smiling version is OK, but only the hair and eyes define it as Thor. The hair colouring remains off - an issue with the first Dark World figure - with the hair a shade too light, and the beard a shade too dark. Bring both colourations closer in terms of a match and the overall look would be improved. The hair piece is an individual piece sculpted and then attached to the head with flowing strands of hair over Thor’s shoulders. Casting it as a single piece does make the hairline neat and tidy with no paint issues to speak of. Thor of course comes with Mjolnir, another re-used part, and with possible issues back at source as I have quite a substantial casting fault on my hammer. It is painted in silver with visible patterns around each face of the hammer. The shaft is brown with a silver spiral design, and the pommel is silver with a brown strap. The strap remains fixed and therefore when posing Thor with Mjolnir the gravity of the strap has to be taken into account. Mjolnir fits into either gripping hand provided with Thor. You also get an alternative pair of hands that appear to have been donated from the Avengers: Endgame Final Battle Thor. These are outstretched hands, sculpted as though to summon lightning - with lightning effects included with Endgame Thor, but not with this release. Articulation is pinned joints throughout, reflecting the base figure's age as most of it dates back to Age of Ultron and releases from 2015. We have 18 points of articulation in total with a full range of motion on both arms and legs, although the latter have to contend with the stiff plastic cape which doesn’t allow much in terms of leg positions. The joints all feel tight and robust, and Thor is easy enough to stand providing the legs are straight enough to lift the cape off the floor. In summary, this is a tweaked repack of a figure that dates back to 2015. There are other Thor’s that warranted a release ahead of this one - particularly the fact we still can’t assemble the 2012 Avengers in their entirety from the Legends stable - and even other Dark World characters that these releases used to bring us outside the main releases such as Malekith, Skurge or even Frigga. This new 2023 Dark World Thor is an improvement on the older version. The head sculpt is improved, but still not perfect with the hair and beard colouring in particular being too far apart in colouring. The additional head is an odd choice, and any Marvel Legends head that tries to convey a particular emotion or facial gesture have always fallen short (Ant-Man) so I am not too sure why this figure warranted an additional head or indeed one smiling in a slightly odd fashion. This one won’t be flying off the shelves, but it will fill a gap for anyone who missed the original Dark World Thor and provides an option to upgrade the head on an older Age of Ultron Thor if you wish.
