Now some 6-years later, it seems we are getting closer to Jar Jar's release. The figure is apparently due to open for pre-order on the 26th of April. • McFarlane DC Collector Edition Releases of Starfire, Captain Boomerang, and The Penguin

Three of the new McFarlane DC Collector Series figures previewed at WonderCon 2024 have now opened for pre-orders ahead of a June 2024 release. The trio features Starfire, Captain Boomerang, and a Classic Penguin. Starfire is based on her appearance during DC Rebirth and features two energy effects and a flight stand. Captain Boomerang from The Flash includes three sets of hands and a pair of boomerang accessories. Captain Boomerang also features a removable soft goods scarf and coat. And finally, The Penguin from the classic DC Comics will come with alternative hands and his umbrella. Each of these Collector Edition releases also comes with a collector art card and with its own display stand. Each figure also has a Platinum Edition Chase version with a different decor. These are going to be randomly packed into the main cases. Platinum Chase Edition An alien princess in exile, Koriand’r of Tamaran escaped a lifetime of brutality as a slave and lab rat for the Citadel and the Psions. Years after manifesting incredible energy powers, she led a revolt and escaped to Earth. An engine of righteous fury, she fights to ensure no other beings have to endure the pain and indignity that ruined her life. Platinum Chase Edition George “Digger” Harkness is a mercenary and killer with an aptitude for boomerangs and other projectiles. Antagonistic and often annoying to those around him, he has fought The Flash and, since his incarceration, has become a member of Task Force X, aka the Suicide Squad. Platinum Chase Edition They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but they also say evil is as evil does. A master manipulator, the Penguin is usually surrounded by violent henchmen who do his bidding without question. But when it comes down to a face-to-face, expect him to unleash a deadly barrage from a variety of umbrella weapons and other ingenious devices—often taking the form of fowl. And when all else fails, the Penguin will fight as dirty as they come, hand to hand combat doesn’t ruffle his feathers at all. • Review: Star Wars Black Series Padme Amidala, The Phantom Menace

“Now Viceroy, we will discuss a new treaty” A Fan Channel Exclusive wave of two figures from The Phantom Menace was released in March 2024, expanding our limited Episode 1 collection with new figures of the young Anakin Skywalker, and Padme Amidala. The figures were only the second and third figures for Episode 1 in the Galaxy Collection and the first general releases with the 01 figure in the line being the Deluxe release of Jar Jar Binks from 2021. The packaging utilises the usual black base with the yellow colouring of The Phantom Menace used on the character text and artwork. Padme is number 03 in the Episode 1 collection, with her side artwork connecting directly to Anakin from the same wave. Padme is designed in her Theed Palace outfit from the finale of The Phantom Menace where she and her Naboo guards capture Viceroy Gunray. The bulk of the figure is therefore cast in burgundy with a cloth texture and sculpted wide sleeves. A lower skirt piece is added as a softer plastic section around the waist, while the legs are plainer in their design and end in a pair of black boots. The outfit is trimmed in gold down either side - starting at the shoulder and proceeding down to the hem of the skirt piece. The other paintwork can be found on the black belt with a silver buckle. Her boots get a level of weathering for some reason applied as a light sandy finish up the front part of the boots, but not carried all the way up or indeed onto the skirt. While Padme has an Episode 2 release in the Black Series, the head sculpt for this release is brand new and is reflective of the younger Queen during the events of The Phantom Menace. Up close the likeness is impressive and captures the features of Natalie Portman with the photo-print facial technique adding a level of realism to the eyes, mouth and what feels like a touch of colour to the cheeks. The tied-back hair is part of the head sculpt but looks to be a clean paint job across the hairline, with the whole thing then translating to a twin-tied bun at the back of the head - this piece is an additional plug-in section. While the likeness is great, be mindful of how you pose Padme as her features can look skewed if you tilt the head down which makes the jawline look skinny and the forehead a touch too big. Padme features 15 points of articulation, all pinless. These include jointed knees and elbows, ankle rockers, hip and shoulder joints, a waist pivot and a dual-jointed neck. The outfit does hold back some posing, with the skirt restricting the options for the legs and the puffy sleeves causing some small hindrance for the arms. All the joints work as intended, are secure when posed, and still offer sufficient options for posing with or without her included accessories. The accessories start with the S-5 heavy blaster pistol and ascension gun that Padme uses during the assault on the Theed Palace. This is one of the best detailed weapons in the Black Series for some time and features a lot of cast detail as well as various paint colouring with a grey main body, silver sights and upper components and a light brown grip. This fits into Padme’s included right hand where a trigger finger slots into place. Padme also comes with the smaller Q2 hold-out blaster pistol hidden in the Throne Room during her final confrontation with Gunray. While the prop was quite smooth and organic, the accessory lacks any detail whatsoever arriving in a plain grey colour. If you put the two weapons side by side, you’d think they were from different figure lines. The hold-out blaster is delicate and won’t fit in the standard right hand, but Hasbro has unusually included an alternative right hand with a smaller grip and trigger finger to hold the Q2 blaster. Padme Amidala in her Theed Palace outfit is of course a key look for Padme from The Phantom Menace and the head sculpt in particular offers potential for further releases like her Mos Espa disguise. The figure is well executed with a strong head sculpt, adequate costume detail, and one great accessory. The other accessory we could have maybe done without. And the same could be said of the weathering on the boots which doesn’t feel in keeping with the figure - it is as though the weathering we wanted on Anakin has been inadvertently added to Padme. The Theed Palace Padme Amidala is certainly a recommended purchase for fans of Episode 1 - extending the figures from the movie marginally alongside Anakin. She is probably slightly the better of the two from the wave - driven by her head sculpt & likeness and very good blaster accessory. • Review: Star Wars Black Series Anakin Skywalker, The Phantom Menace

“Anakin Skywalker, meet Obi-Wan Kenobi” A Fan Channel Exclusive wave of two figures from The Phantom Menace was released in March 2024, expanding our limited Episode 1 collection with new figures of the young Anakin Skywalker, and Padme Amidala. Anakin is number 02 in the Episode 1 collection and his side artwork connects directly to Jar Jar and then onward to Padme. Anakin is a new figure and is designed on the Tatooine look that he wears for much of the movie. The body starts with a darker brown textured torso over which is placed a softer plastic jacket that then makes up Anakin’s tunic. This extends down into a softer skirt section, tied at the waist with a belt which is painted in brown and given a metallic bronze buckle. The arms and trousers follow a similar styling, with the lower legs changing to a cloth-wrapped texture before finishing in a pair of simple shows. Aside from the belt, the figure is devoid of any paintwork, and considering Anakin’s life on Tatooine - and what we see on screen - the figure is too clean and needs some level of weathering. The face is a good likeness to young Anakin (Jake Lloyd) without being spectacular and while photo print has been used, the features remain basic and a bit of throwback to some of the earlier Black Series figures. The hair, a plug-in piece on the head, is sandy-coloured and features a darker wash to bring out the depth of the sculpt. Anakin has 14 points of articulation, a quantity driven by recent removal of the thigh swivel, and due to his small stature. There is sufficient movement in each of the pinless single joints to have Anakin standing, running, or waving goodbye to his mother. Everything works as it should and Anakin is perfectly stable when posed. Despite a number of obvious potential inclusions, Anakin’s only accessory is his backpack. This is a dark brown piece with soft plastic straps. Detailing is limited with a plain rounded main section and a couple of additional pouches on the upper section - the cylindrical one of them has a small painted trim in light brown. The straps do not unplug as we see with other backpacks from Hasbro, but Anakin is small and articulated enough to get the piece on and off without any issues. Once in place, it sits naturally, shaped to the body and looks just like part of the figure. The release of Anakin Skywalker from The Phantom Menace does plug a hole in that collection, allowing a display now to feature Qui-Gonn, Obi-Wan and Anakin together. The look is good in terms of the execution of his Tatooine clothing, there is just a lack of weathering. The head sculpt is standard fair, nothing impressive, but a fair likeness and the hair does get a wash to give that element some depth. The backpack is fine and replicates those scenes as he says goodbye to Shmi, but the figure overall feels short-changed. When you look at Omega from Bad Batch - who is of course a similar size and design - her releases have featured additional weapons, an extra head on the Season 2 release, and Ruby the Lizard with Season 1. Anakin’s box feels empty and we should really have been getting more - perhaps his Pod Racing helmet, or even a Pit Droid considering that sculpt already exists. Accessories aside, Anakin Skywalker from The Phantom Menace is a welcome addition to the Black Series and looks great alongside the older Episode 1 characters - or with Padme, as released in the same wave.
