“But in the arena, anything goes. That’s your best chance” For the Summer Conventions of 2022, Hasbro moved away from their normal convention format established over the previous 3-years and instead dipped into the Publishing Series for a new exclusive offering. The War of the Bounty Hunters Boba Fett in disguise was a simple repaint of the existing Boba Fett figure alongside a new tooled weapon. The packaging was pretty much in line with the other Publishing releases to date, replicating the look of a Book with an opening front cover, but to mark the exclusivity of the figure the cover was given a foil finish. The packaging was adorned with artwork from the 2021 comic series and the front cover depicted Fett in his black armour against a stark red and grey backdrop as seen on the ‘Directors Cut’ comic book cover. Inside the opening cover was more artwork from the comic series and a short piece of background text. The packaging is essentially plastic-free but the figure is still visible, with Hasbro having simply removed the plastic window from this set and then tying the figure into the inner cardboard tray with twist ties. The figure is designed to replicate Fett’s disguise that he uses during the events on Nal Shaddaa at the start of War of the Bounty Hunters. Boba has to earn some credits and to do this he fights in an arena against a series of foes. To avoid causing offence to the Kanji Hutt Clan, he paints his armour black to disguise himself and uses his father’s name Jango. As these events are set almost immediately after Fett leaves Cloud City with Han Solo, Hasbro has chosen to use the older Empire Strikes Back Boba Fett figure from 2013 as the base rather than the much improved 2021 base. The Fett armour has very simply been cast entirely in black plastic with no discernable shade or finish variation between the armoured panels and the suit underneath. All the weaponry on either wrist and the backpack are finished in the same colour and the soft goods cape is now black fabric. The cape is pristine in its finish and folded flat behind the backpack - in the comic art, this is shown as ragged and torn after a few battles which would have been a nice tweak for the figure release. The helmet carries the same moulded dent and is similarly coloured in a matt black, but there is a gloss finish to the visor. The look is a strange one as it is accurate enough to the comic artwork, but it does make the figure look like it's been undercoated in black and is pending more work. We really needed something else over the black to liven the whole figure up - whether that be a wash of some description, some battle damage and chipping with silver-flaked paint, or some detailing on key components to make them pop. The accessories include a black cast version of Boba Fett’s blaster, a simple piece that can be wielded in his right hand, or holstered in the working holster on the figure’s belt. There is then the new tooled piece a 7-inch spear with spikes at either end and a twin blade sitting at the top section like an axe head. This is thankfully not the same black as everything else and uses a very glossy deep brown almost grey finish. The smooth shaft fits into either - or both - hands for posing purposes. Posing is limited as the 2013 Boba Fett figure base was not particularly hot on articulation. While there are 16 points in total the single elbow joints won't quite reach the 90-degree mark due to the bulk of the forearm gauntlets. The shoulders are similarly held back by armour, with the figure pre-dating the flexible pauldrons or those that retract into the torso as the arms are raised. The legs fair better with double-jointed pinned knees sitting above an ankle rocker and beneath both a ball joint hip and thigh swivel. While the legs have a good range of motion, the shaping isn't quite right and Fett can look a tad bow-legged. The hips are also very loose and Fett has a tendency to slide off into the splits. Releasing a Boba Fett convention exclusive based on a unique comic book look at a time when his stock could not have been higher - thanks to his return to live action - should have been a huge success. Unfortunately, the figure has not done as well as expected and went from convention-exclusive to being available more readily at other retailers for a fraction of what Con attendees would have paid. The figure suffers from using a ten-year-old body with limited articulation to replicate a Boba Fett whom we find fighting in an arena - we needed more movement to take advantage of that setting and the huge new melee weapon included in the set. The paint finish too is lacklustre. Colouring the whole thing the same shade of black bar the visor has not worked and it looks flat and boring. There should have been other paint apps on top considering the price and some battle-worn detailing like a tattered cape and paint scratches. All-in-all this one is for the hardcore Boba Fett and comic book collectors. “We did the right thing. We told the truth.” Omega from the Bad Batch was first released in 2022 in her Season 1 outfit, just a year later she received an updated look from Season 2 with a fully reworked figure reflecting her ‘Mercenary’ look. The figure was part of Wave 12 of the Galaxy Collection, and the final wave to feature plastic-free packaging. Omega therefore has a window-less box with the character and figure illustrated around the box front, back and side - while the final slanted side continues the montage artwork for Bad Batch in the deep red assigned colour. Omega is 18 in the Bad Batch series, and her artwork connects to the prior release of ‘Mercenary Gear’ Echo. The Season 2 Omega is a full new figure with no obvious re-use from the first release. She arrives in her more colourful Mercenary outfit including grey trousers, dark brown boots, a red top, two two-tone blue flight jacket, and an overlaid combat strap featuring sculpted pouches and tools. Paintwork is minimised as usual with the components cast in their base colours. We do get silver detail on the strap and some applied red paint to Omega’s right wrist where she has some wrapped cloth. There are two head sculpts included, one wearing her cap and the other without. Again these are both new and are a much better likeness to the now older Omega than the first figure. Like all the animated shows, the Black Series release has converted Omega’s look to a ‘real world’ setting and the final look is impressive with a recognizable look of Omega while not looking out of place alongside any of the live-action figures thanks to the strength of the sculpt and the applied facial print tech. The helmeted version features a brightly painted top to the hat in orange, yellow and red - while the alternative version sees the helmet replaced by an inserted hairpiece. Swapping of the heads is a bit more delicate than usual due to Omega’s size and proportions with a slimmer neck and therefore a smaller ball joint to connect to. I was pleased to find the heads are interchangeable across both Season 1 and Season 2 figures allowing you to use your spare head from this figure to also upgrade your Season 1 Omega if you wanted - be aware that the neck on the first Omega is even more delicate and while the ball joint is a perfect fit to the new head, you may inadvertently remove the whole neck when trying to take off the old figures head. The first Omega featured her energy bow but made it a bit too large for her to handle. This new version surprisingly reworks the bow for a new piece, making it smaller and more manageable for Omega to wield in its drawn position. Like the first version, it is coloured in gold and black with a translucent pink ‘string’ and energy dart. The front guard is an individual piece that clips onto the front of the bow via two plugs. The security on this piece once engaged has also been improved. And Hasbro has not stopped there, as Omega also features a folder version of her bow in the same gold and black colour scheme. She can hold this, or it can be plugged into a socket on the rear of her back and will then sit in the holstered position. Articulation has not been reduced despite Omega’s smaller frame, and she features 19 points of articulation all fully pinless. That provides her with sufficient movement to be posed with her bow in the firing position if you want to maximise that accessory - while also allowing her the ability to kneel, sit, or be posed running among just a few of the options available. The joints are all tight and secure and Omega holds most poses without support. The ‘Mercenary Gear’ Omega is most certainly a huge improvement on the original release and ties in Omega with the rest of the Season 2 Bad Batch figures. The articulation is great considering the smaller frame, and the accessories are a big improvement too on the original with the bow now useable in a posed position. There is nothing really to fault with this Omega, and it also offers a secondary benefit of allowing the first Omega to get an upgrade as the heads are interchangeable between the two figures - allowing a single Mercenary Omega to not only complete the Season 2 Bad Batch line up but allowing the second head to be used to improve the look of the Season 1 release. "Afraid I was gonna leave without giving you a goodbye kiss?" "I'd just as soon kiss a Wookiee." Released as an Exclusive across the European Convention circuit of 2018, the Echo Base set from The Empire Strikes Back featured Han Solo and Princess Leia in their Hoth gear posed inside a diorama-designed box to recreate the Echo Base corridor scene. The set was initially restricted to the conventions at which it appeared including MCM London. Since then, it has made its way into more general circulation as additional stocks are cleared and offered to retailers. The packaging is the main selling point of the set. Considering the two-figure content, it is very large, sized more for the posed scene inside than anything else. It features a blue ice-coloured cardboard window box with a large front window including an icy border design and a further window on the top of the set. This is then all enclosed in an outer clear plastic opening sleeve that features the Black Series logo in ice blue. The side of the box features lined artwork of Solo and Leia, while the rear of the box carries a short piece of background text. Once opened, the two figures are secured into plastic trays that themselves are incorporated into the Echo Base corridor backdrop. As has been the case with all Black Series releases featuring some form of internal diorama, the background has little use outside of the packaging. Princess Leia in her Echo Base Hoth gear is the same figure as released earlier in 2018 as a mainline red box release. There are no exclusive elements or accessories included, and if you have the single release this is essentially a duplicate for your collection. That being said, it is an excellent figure with a great recreation of her padded jumpsuit, over which sits the beige waistcoat complete with Rebel rank insignia painted in silver, red, and blue. The head sculpt is fantastic and utilises both a great likeness to Carrie Fisher and the facial printing to capture the Empire Strikes Back Leia to a tee. The figure was also one of the early releases to feature two-part hair pieces meaning her hairline is crisp and clean against her skin, while the hair itself is detailed with her trademark plaited ringlets. She features three accessories, starting with a pair of removable goggles as seen when repairing the Falcon later on in the movie. While this is therefore not screen accurate to Echo Base itself I am glad that Hasbro included them. They feature a turquoise body with black painted lenses and a softer black strap that goes over Leia’s head. The fit is extremely tight and a bit of gentle heat will ease it along. The sizing is perfect in that the goggles can be posed on her forehead, or over her eyes. Leia also comes with the the welding tool, also seen during the scenes in the belly of the Exogorth, a black cast piece with good detail considering the size but zero decor. The final accessory is a DH-17 blaster, a weapon she went on to use on Bespin - but not on Hoth and not in this cold weather gear? The blaster itself has seen plenty of use in the Black Series and features a black cast main body and sights with a painted silver barrel. Leia features 16 points of articulation, including double-jointed pinned knees. The joints permit her a wide range of display options including wielding any of the included accessories. At the time this set was released, Han Solo had been seen just once previously in his Hoth gear and as part of the Deluxe Release with his Tauntaun back in 2015. When that figure was released, Hasbro chose to go with the blue colour for the jacket - the colour most people associated with Hoth Han thanks to the lighting during the Hoth scenes and the original Kenner figure release from 1980. For this set, they re-used the base figure but updated the coat to brown - the colour of the original prop. The body therefore is a re-use and like Leia, features a padded outfit from the boots, legs, and into the coat. The brown coat is detailed with a similar Rebel rank insignia as Leia but features a different set of coloured pins to reflect their differing ranks. Over the jacket, Han is wearing his gunslinger belt - carried forward from the original A New Hope Han - with a brown base colour, and silver detailing. The original Hoth Han figure had the hood up on the figure and a sculpted scarf, this new version saw the scarf be removed and the fur-lined hood recreated in soft goods. This is an individual piece and features a scarf piece in white material, stitched into a brown segment, and then the fur lining. Soft goods are a point of debate among collectors and are usually chosen to ensure articulation is retained on figures who would be constricted were their robes or cloaks to be a molded piece. The decision here therefore is a little bit odd as the soft goods have no bearing on the figure's articulation, and do not quite work with the rest of the figure. The scarf in particular looks poorly made, and while the fur has some aesthetic quality it takes a while to get it positioned around Han’s head. The head is taken from the Bespin Han Solo release from the same year so he can be displayed without his hood or Rebel Trooper-issued headgear. This gives the figure a further point of difference to the general release. The likeness is strong in the sculpt, but the facial printing does not appear to be as detailed as Leia and that does detract a little on Han’s finished look as he needs more definition and some more colour in his lips. Han’s single accessory is his standard DL-44 blaster, cast in black and with a brown painted grip and silver painted barrel. This fits into Han’s right hand, or into the working holster which is secured by a strap that comes over the grip and clips into the body of the holster. Han features the same 16 points of articulation as Leia with double-jointed pinned knees. Unlike Leia, the joints on Han feel loose in places with far too much movement in both the hip and shoulder joints straight out of the box. This looseness does seem to be isolated to a neutral stance, and when posed for display Han holds his stance well enough. The Echo Base Convention Exclusive was very much a set that was ticking a box for a show exclusive with an emphasis more on the packaging and internal diorama than the figures themselves. Leia is no different to the standard release, and while Han was upgraded to a brown coat and a hoodless look - the soft goods do detract from the finish. This look for Han remains exclusive at the time of writing, with the 2022 Archive release of Han on Hoth reverting to the hood-up version with goggles and Rebel headgear. The set’s popularity can be perhaps judged on the fact that a number of years later this is still available through online sellers for a fraction of the original convention price. For boxed collectors, it is a statement piece but will take up a fair amount of shelf space. For out-of-pack collectors, your sole benefit from the set will be the Hoth Han. We have another NECA reveal courtesy of the Walmart Collector Con build-up, a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: The Last Ronin release of Casey Jones. Casey will feature a removable mask, alternative hands, a selection of improvised weapons, and his golf bag. The figure is not exclusive to Walmart but will be available first through them ahead of a wider general release at other retailers. There were four new Transformers Studio Series releases unveiled by Hasbro at WonderCon 2024. They included the Deluxe Class Sunstreaker (concept) from Bumblebee). A Deluxe Class Gamer Series Sideswipe from War For Cybertron. A Voyager Class Shockwave from the opening sequence of Bumblebee. These are May 2024 releases. We then have a Leader Class Dinobot Swoop from the 1986 Transformers movie coming in the Autumn. The G.I. Joe Classified Series reveals from Hasbro at WonderCon 2024 included a full look at the new Cobra Ferret and Ferret Scout. There were also Retro Carded reveals of the Snow Serpent. McFarlane have confirmed a Platinum Edition Chase release of The Spectre from the DC Multiverse line and based on the Crisis on Infinite Earths storyline. The figure is a repaint of the general release with a darker grey suit with Green Lantern symbol. It still features the build-a-figure part for The Monitor. The Platinum Edition should be randomly packed into the cases of the standard release, but McFarlane are also giving US collectors a chance to be drawn to win one through the 'Run Fair' program. The next three releases in McFarlane's Warhammer 40k series were revealed last month at the Warhammer Relics Festival. The figures have now gone up for pre-order at Target in the US for a May 2024 release. The Iron Warriors Chaos Marine is specifically labelled as a Gold Label Exclusive and includes Bolt Pistol, Combat Knife, Power Mace, and Boltgun. The Blood Angel Reiver Sergeant comes with a Bolt Pistol, Grapnel Launcher, Bolt Carbine, and Combat Knife. We also have a Ymagarl variant of the Genestrealer, a figure that has been released as an Artists Proof - but now comes fully painted. The Genestealer features alternative hands/claws for the upper arms. McFarlane has previewed another new DC Multiverse release, a Gold Label Exclusive release of Mister Zsasz. The figure will come with Zsasz's knife and will be a US Exclusive to the McFarlane Store.
