In 2015, Marvel Comics published a Princess Leia comic book miniseries of 5 issues that focused on Leia and the events between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back as she dealt with the destruction of her homeworld. The comic featured alternative looks for Leia outside those synonyms with the films and that has led to the 2022 Black Series release of Princess Leia from this comic series in the 2nd wave of Publishing figures. As is now standard, the Publishing figures use a book-inspired closed box packaging with an opening front cover. The cover artwork for the figure is taken directly from Issue 5 of the Princess Leia series, while further comic book art is found around the box sides and rear. Inside the inner cover is another comic illustration, some short background text, and the figure itself set behind the usual window. This new Princess Leia is a tweaked figure based on parts from other Black Series releases. The body is from the Hoth Princess Leia and was also used on the Bespin Escape version and it is that figure that also donates the head, albeit with a new hairpiece at the rear. The lower arms, lower legs and gun-belt all appear new, while the cloak is from the Padme Amidala release. The main body of the suit is simply cast in an off-white finish with sculpted quilting and paneling up the legs and across the main torso. The boot sections are a dark gloss brown while the long-sleeved gloves are coloured in a sandy brown which is a similar tone to the cloak - this is textured throughout with a tough hessian-like finish that is more evident on the coloured version vs the original white seen on Padme. The head is a good likeness to Carrie Fisher with the comic book release still realised in a full real-world setting and using facial printing to maximise the look. The hair piece is complex - as is standard for Leia - and is plugged into the back of the main head and incorporates both a plaited bun but also plaited loops that sit down over the top of the cloak. The cloak is removable and gives the option of a different look for Leia in her white jumpsuit. Leia is armed with two blasters, an E-11 blaster rifle in plain black plastic, and her more elegant Defender sporting blaster pistol we see her first use in her early appearance during A New Hope. The pistol features limited sculptural detail, but does include a silver end to the barrel. Both blasters fit into Leia’s right hand and the pistol can be holstered on the belt when not in use. Articulation is 16 points in total with the body featuring the older format pinned double-jointed knees. Without the cloak, Leia has a full range of motion with each joint working well and holding most poses. With the cloak in place, the leg movement is more restricted to upright posing while the shoulders can’t quite be extended too far upward before they begin to push against the cloak. Princess Leia Organa from Marvel Comics is a canon release in terms of the current Star Wars saga so unlike some of the other Publishing releases, she can fit straight into a display alongside other comic book releases from the same Marvel Series such as Doctor Aphra & her droids, and the Luke Skywalker Strikes release. She is a great-looking figure and a much more dynamic look for Leia vs her elegant robes from A New Hope demonstrating a transition outfit that will eventually fit in with her uniform on Hoth. "I may be of some use in locating my former master" Infinities was a series of Graphic Novels by Dark Horse Comics published between 2002 and 2004 that told an alternative story of each of the original Star Wars Trilogy films. During the re-telling of Return of the Jedi, Darth Vader was redeemed by both Luke and Leia and after escaping the Death Star he agreed to join the Rebels in hunting down Palpatine who was still a threat in this alternative timeline. This release entitled Infinities Darth Vader is technically the redeemed Anakin Skywalker from the end of the Return of the Jedi Infinities story where he dons a white version of the Darth Vader suit and sets off with Luke to hunt down Palpatine. The figure was released in 2022 as part of the 2nd wave of Publishing figures within the Star Wars Black Series. These all feature book-inspired packaging with a front cover that opens to reveal the figure within. The cover itself uses the artwork from the Dark Horse Novel while a comic panel within is taken from the Graphic Novel and also features a short piece of background text. The figure is a tweaked version of the existing Return of the Jedi Darth Vader, now entirely cast in white plastic and featuring white soft goods robes. Detailing is added around the chest unit and belt with blues and reds alongside silver and grey components. The soft goods are the same material as usually found on Vader and are secured under the shoulder panel and follow down through the belt section to create both an inner skirt and outer cloak. The helmet is also unchanged, just now cast in a gloss white plastic with silver painted visors. The overall look is a good match to the comic artwork but realised in the real-life setting by applying the colour scheme onto the movie Vader figure. Vader comes with his lightsaber, still complete with a red blade which is perhaps a touch contentious if this is the redeemed Anakin, and maybe his saber blade should have also reverted to its original blue. The saber features the usual black and silver hilt with a removable translucent red blade. The hilt has a hooked section near the emitter that corresponds to a hook on Vader/Anakin’s belt to allow it to be secured when not in use. Infinities Vader features pinned articulation in the legs and 16 points in all. The arms are suitable for most saber poses, even without butterfly shoulders, but the legs do carry forward the same issues as the other releases particularly the loose hips which do slide off too easily when having him stood. The soft goods work well with any pose, with plenty of material to fold and shape around the body. Infinities Vader is very much a Legends release for fans of the Dark Horse series. It is an interesting look, but one that hasn’t appeared to be overly well received by fans with the figure still available at discount prices at the time of writing. Taking the source material aside, the figure looks fine and is a dominant piece on display - he is just lacking any wider collection to sit within presently other than some of the other Legends pieces from the Publishing line like Carnor Jax (Kir Karnos) and Jaxxon. McFarlane's new Movie Maniacs releases from The Matrix have been fully unveiled and have opened for pre-orders at McFarlane stockists. The releases of Neo and Trinity will follow the usual Movie Maniacs format with a posed figure on a diorama base with a cardboard backdrop. Each set also includes an art card featuring a certificate of authenticity and a holder. There is also a mystery item included in each set. Neo is limited to 8500 units, while Trinity is just 5300 units. They both release in May 2024. Neo is a young software engineer and part-time hacker who is singled out by some mysterious figures who want to introduce him into the secret of the matrix. “Sounds great Sarge. But I fight to not get shot! I say we blow the whole building” The 3rd wave of Star Wars Black Series Publishing figures from Hasbro brought us our second member of Task Force 99 from the Star Wars comics series. SCAR Trooper Mic joins Sergeant Kreel from the Wave 2. As with all the Publishing releases, Mic is packed in closed, book-inspired packaging with the front cover art taken directly from a panel within the Star Wars comic series depicting SCAR squadron. The box features an opening front cover with more comic book artwork and some background text on the inside leaf. Sadly, the 3rd Wave of Publishing figures fell into the ‘plastic free’ era of packaging for Hasbro and rather than open the cover to reveal the figure, the cover disappointingly opens to reveal another cover with an image of the figure confirming the contents which themselves are wrapped in waxy paper and held in place by a cardboard inner tray. Mic uses the newer second edition Storm Trooper body, with no adjustments throughout the armour other than the inclusion on the left wrist of the same holo-comm device used on Kreel. Like all the newer Troopers the armour is a glossy hard white plastic and connected by black joints providing Mic with a crisp and clean look and practically zero paint applications. The body armour is tweaked through decor with some black lines on the chest armour and the midsection components left unpainted as opposed to the usual series of black component parts. Mic features a new sculpted helmet reflecting his role as the Squad’s slicer. This variation on the usual Stormtrooper helmet includes a side aerial and integrated light, a grooved pattern to the front of the helmet, and a reflective blue visor rather than black. The final element of Mic’s gear is a brand new backpack design - cast in white with a grey central panel inserted with a further blue metallic piece. The ‘arms’ of the backpack extend on grey pistons. Hasbro has tried to make the pack fit into the existing rear section of a Stormtrooper, shaping the rear of the back pack in an inverted pattern hoping the two would then clip together. Sadly this is a complete disaster and the backpack fails to engage in any level - this may vary between figures depending on the cast. The only way I could get the backpack to sit in place was through the use of Blutac. As well as the backpack, Mic is also provided with a standard E-11 blaster rifle. This is on closer inspection an adjusted version of the E-11 with sights both up top and to the side near the barrel. The piece is cast in grey with a touch of silver detail down the main shaft. Unlike Kreel, Mic does not get a working holster. The figure has the same 19 points of articulation as incorporated into the new Stormtrooper body with technical two further joints on the backpack although that opening mechanism is rudimentary at best. Mic poses really well and holds most poses with a good level of stability. These SCAR Trooper variants of the relatively uniform Stormtrooper design are a nice way of expanding Imperial Forces and providing rank variants, even if you are not a fan or follow the comic book series. For those who are invested in Task Force 99 we now have two of the team in figure form and perhaps can hope for more in the future under the Publishing Series banner. Hiya Toys have revealed a new 1/12 scale figure of Daryl Dixon from The Walking Dead in their Exquisite Super Series. Daryl will feature two head options, soft goods tailored clothing, hat, duffel bag and alternative hands. Weaponry included will vary from a crossbow, to a rifle, spear and mace. He also comes with a display base inclusive of the Walking Dead series logo He is listed as shipping in the first quarter (Jan-March) of 2025. Story follows【The Walking Dead】, Daryl wakes up on the southern coast of France, where he encounters Isabelle, a nun, and a child named Laurent. “We've spilled that blood into the dirt of every planet in the galaxy. Because we are the Empire's fist. We are stormtroopers. And you can never kill us all." Sergeant Kreel was introduced into the Star Wars Canon through the 2015 Star Wars comics. He started as an undercover Imperial Stormtrooper and then went on to be given command of SCAR Trooper Task Force 99 under the direct control of Darth Vader. Kreel is unusual in that he wields a lightsaber as a weapon. He was brought into the Star Wars Black Series in 2022 as part of Wave 2 of the Publishing Series of figures. Kreel is packed into the book-inspired closed packaging with the front artwork taken from the cover of Star Wars issue 60 with Kreel battling Luke Skywalker in a lightsaber duel. More artwork is included on the side panels of the ‘book’ and inside the cover along with some background text on Sergeant Kreel. The release fell just before Hasbo’s move to plastic-free packaging so the figure and accessories are visible via the window beneath the front cover. Sergeant Kreel is built on the second edition (pinless) Stormtrooper body as released first in 2020 at the start of the Galaxy Collection series. The figure features new pieces to mirror Kreel’s look in the comics with a new re-shaped smoother chest piece and a companion rear torso piece with an incorporated jet pack. There is also a tweak to the belt adding an extra slung pouch to the right-hand side and a working holster to the left. Kreel wears an orange Pauldron with black trim and the Imperial symbol that connects around the neck and sits over the right shoulder. This has come from the First Order Stormtrooper and is missing the under-arm strap we see on Sandtroopers. The final additions are smaller components added over the Stormtrooper armour with a holo-comms device on the left wrist made up of a blue screen and black case and straps that secure it over the wrist armour, and more commando black pouches around the left elbow - further bulking out the left arm - and the left thigh. The second edition Stormtroopers feature a full pinless assembly with armoured parts cast in bright white over joints cast in black plastic that replicate the Trooper’s undersuit. Kreel follows the same principles giving him a crisp finish. Kreel does feature black detailing on his stomach section - a piece that is usually white on standard Stormtroopers. The helmet is standard with a pretty standard paint job with the black rim, black visor, and black/silver/grey panels around the breathing apparatus. Kreel is equipped with a standard E–11 blater in cast black that fits into his right or left hands with trigger fingers fitted at both. The weapon can also be holstered via the included holster on the belt. We also get Kreel’s lightsaber, a relatively simple design of a black central section and silver-painted emitter. The saber is not new and is a repaint of one of the sabers included with the original General Grievous release from 2019. The hilt has no obvious way of being holstered - there is no incorporated pin or hook. You can wedge it between the sections of the belt for a reasonably secure hold. The Marvel Legends team at Hasbro has just shared another YouTube video update about the HasLab Giant Man figure. Within the video presentation, they have confirmed that the new Wasp figure shown a few months ago is now going to be part of a 2-pack with a new Hank Giant-Man (normal sized).
