McFarlane is working their way through their next batch of Movie Maniacs releases, and following on from the reveal of The Dude we now get a look at David Wooderson from Dazed and Confused. Mezco have revealed their new One:12 Collective figure of Miles Morales Spider-Man from Across the Spider-Verse. The figure features a fitted body suit, four head options and a selection of hands. You also get web effects, some 'Spider Sense' effects, and a comic book. The usual display stand and base is also included. Miles Morales will be a late 2024 release with a due date between October and December "Everyone keeps telling me how my story is supposed to go. Sorry, I'm doing my own thing." Joining the McFarlane Movie Maniacs line of static 6-inch posed figures is this June 2024 release of The Dude from The Big Lebowski. As is the usual format for Movie Maniacs the figure arrives in a large window box and is posed on a diorama base with a cardboard backdrop. Hasbro has fully unveiled two new Star Wars Black Series releases, sets previously announced as in the 'Pipeline'. Both are taken from the Mandalorian and both are exclusives. The first is a Droid pack containing R5-D4, BD-72 and a pair of Pit Droids as seen in Peli Motto's workshop. R5-D4 has of course been recently released as a single figure, but in this set he is now provided with his Jet Thrusters. This is a Target US exclusive, so Fan Channel elsewhere. It is a Summer 2024 release. This Droid pack remains in the angled side packaging. Also going to Target in the US is the Mandalorian Privateer, the male version of the Nite Owl Mandalorian. He comes with blaster and jedtpack and is also a Summer 2024 release. The Privateer will use the new boxed packaging for the Galaxy collection. Neither set has a pre-order date and for UK collectors, they will likely go up at Fan Channel retailers and Hasbro Pulse once Target lists them on their website in the US. Jazwares have released details of their next Star Wars Micro Galaxy Squadron release from The Vault. It will be a set of Series 3 Light Armor releases including the Rare and Chase variants. The five ship set will feature Obi-Wan's Interceptor, Anakin's Interceptor, First Order Tie Fighter, Aayla Secura's Interceptor (Rare), and Plo Koon's Jedi Starfighter (Rare). The listing will open on the 24th of April and is listed as limited to 1500 units. The Vault remains accessible only to US collectors. "Build your own droid at Black Spire Outpost’s industrial depot." The first Star Wars Black Series Disney Parks Exclusives for Galaxy’s Edge were released in 2019 with box sets created solely for the Parks and made up of both revamped existing figures and new ones such as Hondo Ohnaka and DJ-R3X. In 2022 three more packs were unveiled including a four-pack set called Droid Depot that featured repacks of a B1 Battle Droid and Babu Frik, a repainted KX Droid, a variant BB unit, and the Black Series’ first-ever Pit Droid. Like all the Disney Park releases, the sets are packed into closed presentation boxes using the Galaxy’s Edge design principles. The Droid Depot set uses a blue accent colour surrounding the grey-scale artwork of the four Droids. The artwork is repeated around the back with headline text for each character underneath detailing their place in the Star Wars Universe. The box opens up via a front cover to reveal the figures within against a deep red backdrop with more artwork and text on the inside cover sitting under the main Black Series logo. We will start our look at this set with CB-23 a BB Droid we were introduced to in Star Wars: Resistance and who worked with Poe Dameron while BB8 was off doing other missions. CB-23 uses the BB8 body but features an updated and flattened dome with extending aerials in a softer plastic. She is a pink/red colour with light blue panel details and silver inserts on each face of the ball section. The head includes a pair of silver eyes within a further ring of blue highlight panels. The flat top is silver with some sculpted droid gubbins visible and the two aerials extending from the centre. CB-23 is wonderfully painted and a very different-looking droid to those we have in the collection to date. Articulation is limited to the dome which moves around on a small internal axis for some varying positions. The droid’s circular design is a flaw in getting it to stay on display and there is no flattening of the base of the body, no included stand, and no obvious weighting to hold the figure upright. You will need some form of washer, ring, or even simple Blu-Tac to get CB-23 on display. Joining CB-23 is Babu Frik, the Anzellan Droid Smith we meet in The Rise of Skywalker. He has only had one release previously as an added part with the 2019 release of C-3PO and has become increasingly hard to obtain on the secondary market with a price that now exceeds that of a standard 6-inch figure. His popularity having been driven up further by his species' appearance in the Mandalorian. While the promo art shows a slightly lighter colour scheme, in hand this is more or less the same figure as released in 2019 paintwork-wise and that paintwork is pretty neat considering the scale of Babu Frik. He is decor includes a painted face with eye and mouth details, his hood, droids-smith belt & apron, and devices around his wrists. He features three points of articulation with tiny ball joints in the shoulders - which can pop out if you aren’t careful - and a movable visor that can be lowered over his head. Despite his small stature, he is perfectly secure once stood on his wide feet. Up next is our KX Droid, K-7R1 who is the first figure in the set directly linked to Galaxy’s Edge. The droid is seen as a prop in the Droid Depot of Black Spire Outpost - with his head detached from his body. The figure has been re-assembled and uses the KX Droid body first seen in 2016 with the K-2SO release for Rogue One. K-7R1 features updated paintwork reflective of his look at Black Spire Outpost with white markings on his face and chest and tan brown on his forearms. He also features damaged paintwork around the shoulders and hips with silver scratches and some rust colouration beneath. Paintwork aside this is the same KX Droid base figure with 15 points of articulation all worked into the droid construction with elbow and knee joints incorporated into the design and functionality of the figure. He does remain top-heavy and has some weakness in the ankle joints which makes him prone to falling. There is also a slight disappointment that Hasbro didn’t go the whole hog and make his head detachable. Droid four is the B1 Battle Droid, included in the set as a direct repack of the 2019 release from The Phantom Menace. The B1 features the same tan cast body with smaller weathering elements in brown ‘splashed’ mud colour and silver scratches and dings. Like Babu Frik the variance between the Disney Parks release and the original is minimal with factory run application the only main difference. Our B1 comes with the only accessory of the set, his blaster, and also features both backpack and rear aerial configuration. It has 17 points of articulation, also worked into the construction of the droid and this allows a wide range of positions, including a folded pose with arms wrapped around the folded legs. The B1 is notoriously unstable with the thin legs also featuring loose joints. He is a nightmare to stand and keep standing and would benefit from a stand. Like Babu Frik and CB-23, there is no direct link between the B1 Battle Droid and the Galaxy’s Edge although B1 parts are seen in the Droid Depot attraction. The final piece of the set is the brand new figure, a Pit Droid as first seen in The Phantom Menace and who have more recently been seen playing a wider role in The Mandalorian. The Pit Droid is cast in a deeper brown finish with a similar construction to the B1 Droid in terms of a skeletal look and circular pivot joints. There is added paintwork in silver around some of these joints and some brown around either wrist. The large head features a pinkish trim and the large black central eye. A pair of aerials extends from the left hand of the dome in off-white, tipped in black. Our Pit Droid features 17 points of articulation including the ability to rotate the clawed hands, but a contrasting lack of movement on the head with the tiny ball joint that connects the delicate neck to the large dome resistant to any rotation. The Pit Droid is a little easier to stand than the B1 but is still loose around the legs. He doesn’t come with any accessories which is a shame considering the various tools and devices we see them use in their on-screen appearances. The 2022 Droid Depot release is an interesting mix with some ties to Disney Park’s Galaxys Edge attraction, but some outlying inclusions too like Babu Frik and CB-23 from Resistance. The set remains a Park’s Exclusive so available only in the US to park attendees making it difficult to obtain anywhere else without a huge secondary market premium. While marketed as five figures, only two are full size with the Pit Droid, CB-23 and Babu Frik figures Hasbro could never offer on their own and who would always form part of a wider set. Price-wise, you are looking at circa £100 as a good UK price with shipping and that is probably only worth it if you are a completist or die-hard collector of all things Droid. The Pit Droid sculpt is incoming into the mainline soon, while K-731 and CB-23 are very niche and likely will remain solely exclusive to this set. Hasbro's Marvel Legends team hosted an April 15th Fan First Livestream via the Hasbro Pulse YouTube channel with more news and reveals for the Marvel Legends series. The panel was hosted by the usual trio of Dan, Dwight and Ryan As well as recapping some of the newer reveals like the Deadpool Legacy releases of Deadpool and Wolverine, and the Iron-Man Retro Carded wave. The panel also provided details of new figures incoming to the line later this year starting with some more Anniversary releases which of course started back in 2018 with the First Ten Years MCU releases and has been an annual event ever since in the Autumn. For 2024 the Anniversary releases will be the 85th Marvel Anniversary and will include a crossover with the Wolverine Anniversary with an Astonishing Wolverine release on a Super-Articulated new body with alternative heads and hands. Wolverine is an April 16th pre-order at mainline retailers. The next 85th Anniversary release is an updated Warbird Carol Danvers. Carol has two heads, a super articulated body, and alternative hands and she will be a Target US exclusive with Fan Channel availability through the UK including Hasbro Pulse. Details on this pre-order were not revealed. Spider-Man is also represented with a Superior Spider-Man release including a full backpack with articulated arms as well as alternative hands. Superior Spider-Man has two head options, one of which features a reflective cityscape on the eye visors. Spider-Man is a mainline release and was listed as opening for pre-order on the 16th of April. The next release was a Deluxe Fan Channel Exclusive with a new Skarr figure. He features two heads, a sword, and a dagger that can be sheathed in a sheath on the rear of his belt. Pre-order for this one will open later this year. Moving to Multi-Packs there is a new two-pack of Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Iron-Fist comes with a raft of hand options, two heads, and Iron-Fist effect pieces that connect to the clenched fist hands. Luke Cage has two heads, and two pairs of hands - one featuring his knuckledusters. This one is a mainline release with pre-orders on the 23rd of April. The final reveal is a Danny Ketch Ghostrider with a flaming chain accessory and alternative hands. He also features his Motorbike with fire effects that act as a base and that can also allow the bike to be posed in a 'wheelie position'. Ghost Rider is a mainline release with pre-orders as of the 30th of April 2024. While six have been revealed, there will be ten of these in total with an Autumn 2024 release. The panel ended with the usual tease which was a large stone piece. A photo shared afterward by Dan Yun also included a further tease (intentional or not) with the apparent open packaging for a new Hulkbuster. Following on from the Marvel Legends Fan First Live Stream on the 15th of April 2024, the Hasbro PR team have now shared the promotional details for the brand new Marvel 85th Anniversary releases coming Autumn 2024. These are six of what will be a ten release run. Wolverine and Superior Spider-Man are mainline releases and will open for pre-order on the 16th of April. Iron Fist and Luke Cage is a 23rd of April pre-order and Ghost Rider is a 30th of April pre-order. Both of these are mainline releases. Pre-orders for the Target Exclusive Carol Danvers Warbird and the Fan Channel Exclusive Deluxe Skarr will follow later this year. “I have come for the bounty on this Wookiee” The latest iteration of Chewbacca within the Black Series was released in 2023 initially as part of the Return of the Jedi 40th Anniversary carded series, and then later in the year as part of Wave 12 of the Galaxy Collection. It is this latter release we are looking at here - although both figures are identical. Wave 12 was the final wave to use plastic-free packaging and therefore has no window, but uses photographic images to illustrate the figure. As a Return of the Jedi release it features a green accent colour on the text and side artwork, with Chewbacca number 10 in the ROTJ collection. Sadly the side art does not line up particularly well with the Ewok Village Leia at 09 with the arm of Leia out of place when the boxes are side by side. This is another montage issue from the Return of the Jedi figures after the transition from Bib Fortuna to Ewok Village Leia was also poorly executed. This is the exact same Chewbacca body as we have had since its first release back in 2014. The body is entirely sculpted fur with lines of fur aligned around the joints so that one segment ceases before the joint and then a new section of fur continues afterwards. It is all cast in a base brown and then features darker washes within to add depth and further texture. The figure is based on the scene in Jabba’s Palace when Boussh presents Chewbacca as their prisoner. This means a new head sculpt is included, incorporating a non-removable chain around Chewie’s neck and a further flexible chain length running from this to a circlet that can be held by another figure. Like the body, the head is cast in brown with darker washes, and Chewie also features much more realistic eyes than some of the previous releases, most likely through photo-real decor application. The body stands a considerable height taller than most human-sized figures, perhaps too tall when you look at how Chewie and Boushh line up in the Return of the Jedi scenes on which this is based, although the height variation can vary depending on the scene - and with Boushh also having two heights thanks to a correction in recent years. Height issue has plagued the Chewbacca body since its inception in 2014 and while other corrections have been made to the likes of R2-D2 and the aforementioned Boushh figure, the Wookiee proportions remain unchanged. Chewbacca comes with his bandoleer, a removable piece that sits over his shoulder and is painted brown with silver details and with a brown leather finish to the satchel part. He also comes with his bow caster which is a two-piece grey plastic that connects together with the cross-section attaching to the main body at the front by means of slotted sockets. The fit here is hugely improved on previous versions while remaining broadly the same accessory. Fitting it in Chewie’s hand does remain difficult and articulation also restricts the posing opportunities. Articulation is 16 points on paper, although the fur body does hold back certain joints. The head in particular is tough to move, as are the hips behind that shaggy fur. The elbows lack motion and get to about 345 degrees which is what hurts the weapons posing, while the legs are a little more extensive in their movement. Chewie also surfers from non-ratcheted hips which can be a weak spot considering his bulk. The 2023 Return of the Jedi release of Chewbacca is very much a scene-specific release with Chewie in chains as seen on his arrival to Jabba’s Palace. He makes an awesome companion piece to Princess Leia as Boushh and looks great posed with Jabba or the Gamorrean Guards. For those looking for a more generic Chewie for their Star Wars collection then the recent Archive release for A New Hope may present a better option. Hiya Toys have revealed a new 1/12 Super Exquisite 1/12 release of Doctor McCoy from the Star Trek Kelvin Universe movies, as played by Karl Urban. The figure will come with three different head portraits, a selection of hands, a phaser, a medical tricoder, and a selection of medical instruments.
