"Peggy, you might want to brace yourself" The 2023 Marvel Legends Disney+ wave brought together figures from WandaVision, Hawkeye, Secret Invasion, and Marvel's What If? with the latter also being the source for the wave's build-a-figure. The Hydra Stomper, as seen in season 1, had been released back in 2021 as a deluxe release. In 2023 it was - like its onscreen appearance - fully redesigned and released split across six of the seven figures in the wave, with Kingpin from Hawkeye the only figure to not feature a Hydra Stomper part. The Hydra Stomper is a new figure and designed to match Steve Roger's suit from Season 2 of What If? The figure is predominantly silver with overlapping panels reminiscent of the Mark 1 Iron-Man suit, complete with sculpted rivets and bolts. The silver is metallic enough but lacks a wash or some weathering to bring the figure to life. Details are provided by way of the red-rimmed arc reactor, red trims on the shoulders and the jet pack, and the twin star decals on either shoulder - although these should be red in colour, an error likely driven by the usual issue of Hasbro working from earlier concept artwork and designs. Hydra Stomper also comes with an unmasked Steve Rogers head, aligned very much to the What If? animation style rather than converting Steve to a real-world setting. The likeness to the onscreen look is good but it lacks the dark sunken eyes and withdrawn skin - looking more like Steve from Season 1 before he fell into the control of Hydra and then the Red Room. Scaling of the unmasked head on the large body of the Stomper just about works - but it really needs to sit more down into the chest and neck section - using the neck peg for the helmet sits it too high. The head should also really sit into the helmet with a removable face plate if we are matching what we see in the episode. The other accessories included in the set are an alternative pair of hands which allow you to vary your Hydra Stomper between clenched fists or open hands. Despite the various weaponry options and a jet pack, Hasbro has chosen not to include any blast effects. Articulation is pinless and spread across 18 points in total. Due to the bulk of the figure movement is restricted, although the arms are extended beyond what you might expect of them thanks to the hinges of the shoulder armour. The Hydra Stomper from Season 2 feels like a backward step vs the beast we saw in Season 1 and the figures compare in the same way with the 2021 Hydra Stomper a much more impressive figure than this smaller and less detailed 2023 Season 2 release. The figure also features a few inaccuracies like the colour of the star emblems and the unmasked Steve Rogers head and how that interacts with the suit. The Hydra Stomper BAF is one of the What If releases entrenched very much in its animated origins and that particular style - as seen on some, but not all of the What If? figures - is not one to everyones liking. "You, Gamora, have been chosen" Warrior Gamora was introduced in the first season of Marvel's What If? joining the Guardians of the Multiverse at the end of the season. Her introductory episode also featuring Iron Man and set on Sakaar should have also been part of Season 1 but was pushed back into Season 2 due to delays through the Covid-19 pandemic. Warrior Gamora was released into the Marvel Legends line in 2023 and was part of the Disney+ wave for that year featuring figures from WandaVision, Hawkeye, Secret Invasion and What If? She was a plastic-free release with no window box in the packaging and instead, the figure is illustrated on the front and rear of the box with confirmation of the BAF component parts on the side spine. Gamora comes with the arm and an alternative hand for the Hydra Stomper. In the What If? Universe Gamora has defeated her father Thanos and now wields his twin-bladed sword and a version of his armour and this is replicated perfectly onto the figure. The What If? figures have so far been a mix of styles in their execution with real-world proportions seen on figures that have been repurposed like Killmonger & Goliath and more animated styling on brand new figures like Gamora or other releases like T'Challa Star-Lord or Infinity Ultron. Gamora is a taller stature than her MCU counterpart standing a good half a head taller. The armour is coloured in gold with grey trim, while the skin tone is a deep green. The colours are very much entrenched in the animation style with bold brash colouring. The head sculpt takes no inspiration or likeness from Zoe Saldana, and instead replicates the animated look complete with flowing red/black hair and facial markings. Gamora features 18 points of articulation, all of which are pinless. We get a good range of motion in the legs while the arms are a touch restricted when raised by the overhanging shoulder armour panels. There is one visible joint on the neck which doesn't use dual jointing, thankfully the head sits in a position to keep this joint obscured. The sole accessory is the twin blade which is carried over from the 2021 MCU Thanos releases. It features a dull metal blade on either side with sculpted inscriptions. In the centre is a dull bronze grip with two circular guards. It fits into Gamora's right hand, with the left hand more of a flat open palm sculpt that can cradle the blade, but not hold it. The What If? figures have certainly not been as popular as either the comic book or cinematic figures to date sitting with a style that feels like it is trying to straddle both worlds. While the Black Series made a conscious decision to convert all animated characters to a real-world setting for Star Wars, the Marvel Legends offering feels disjointed. Gamora is a great figure but one that will appeal to fans of the What If? animated style and yet a figure that still looks out of place with some of the other characters from the What If? line where they are converted from their MCU compatriot figures. "Before I kill you, I need to ask you one question." After her debut in the MCU during the events of Black Widow, Yelena Belova returned in the 2021 Hawkeye series on Disney+ sporting a new look and initially seeking revenge on Clint Barton who she blamed for her sister's death. This updated look for Yelena was released in the Marvel Legends line in 2023 as part of the Hydra Stomper BAF wave which also included Kingpin from Hawkeye and figures from WandaVision, Secret Invasion, and What If? The wave was released during the plastic-free packaging era so the box is fully enclosed and features photos of the figure to depict the content, with the BAF checklist shifted to one of the side spines. The figures inside are wrapped in wax paper which can lead to warping in the box, and an issue I have found with this figure's legs in particular as we will see later. The figure depicts Yelena in the black suit she dons in the events of the Hawkeye finale, and therefore not the more tactical suit and mask from her earlier appearance. This includes repurposed parts from her original 2020 figure release with both legs and arms directly carried forward, although now coloured in black rather than white and with the legs now missing their thigh holsters. The hips and torso are new and a textured vest finish with a central seam and extended collars. The vest isn't quite right vs the onscreen costume and looks more like a puffer jacket than a tactical vest. Paintwork is limited but has been added in a brown trim down the vest and the upper thighs. Her stingers on each wrist are also painted with grey and red details. The head sculpt is a much-improved likeness to Florence Pugh but goes very heavy on the makeup with dark, almost black, lipstick and eyeliner. This is very similar to the promo poster for Yelena but is perhaps too heavy in terms of what Pugh was actually wearing on set. The skin tone also looks wrong, too pale, and that throws the figure overall. The hairpiece is impressive with the hair drawn up to a top bun and then down in a plaited ponytail. Yelena comes with her batons as used in Hawkeye but features hands (carried over) that were designed to hold pistols. While they still work with the batons, the grip is not great and the extended trigger finger can look a bit off. There are no holstering options for the batons. Articulation is a mix of pinned (legs) and pinless (arms) with the same 16 points of articulation as her first figure from 2020. There is sufficient movement in the arms and legs for action posing with or without the batons thanks to the simplicity of the outfit. As mentioned earlier, the way she - and most other windowless figures - are packed does result in the warping of parts that would usually be secured in an inner tray. For Yelena, this has resulted in quite a bit of leg warping on my figure which I have been unable to correct. While another figure from the Hawkeye series is very welcome, for me there are a few poor choices made with Yelena that has resulted in quite a bland and uninteresting figure. There were no issues with re-using arms and legs from the original movie figure, but that torso needed to be a closer march to the tactical vest with better colouring than the grubby yellow used. The hands needed an update to match the batons rather than come with trigger fingers, and there is a missed opportunity for the mask she is wearing in the earlier scenes as an added extra. Yelena Belova certainly isn't a disaster, but is a figure that could have delivered much more. Hasbro's new Ghostbusters 1:18 scale ECTO-1 release, featuring the original 1984 version of the iconic vehicle, has opened for pre-orders. McFarlane's new DC Multiverse release of Tim Drake Robin has been listed for pre-order at McFarlane stockists with the figure due for release in July 2024. The next Marvel 85th Anniversary release of Carol Danvers Warbird opened for pre-order on the 9th of May 2024. The figure is a Target exclusive in the US and sold through the Fan Channel elsewhere, including Hasbro Pulse. It is listed as an early August 2024 release.
