  • Our trip to the Leicester Vintage and Old Toy Shop

I found myself in Leicester recently and finally was able to visit the Leicester Vintage and Old Toy Shop on Bond Street. This place does not disappoint for fans of action figures and vintage toys - particularly the 80s and 90s - with a layout that is extensive in content while remaining bright and airy to browse. The team was really lovely. They approached us to see if we were OK and offered to open up any cabinet if we wanted to see any items in more detail. They then left us to browse, and reminisce, in peace and we could have spent hours in there checking out all the goodies. We took a handful of photos and these do not do the place justice. The shop opens Thursday through Sunday so check out their website for full details before you make a special journey. To manage our storage costs, news article images are archived after 12-months. • Review: Star Wars Black Series Cal Kestis from Jedi: Survivor (Gaming Greats) Galaxy Collection Wave 10

"I wanted to prove to the galaxy that the Empire isn't invulnerable." The first Star Wars Black Series release of Cal Kestis was in 2019, coinciding with the release of the Jedi: Fallen Order videogame. This figure went on to be repurposed in 2021 to a Deluxe release in his Bracca's 'Scrappers' outfit. To mark Cal's second outing in Jedi: Survivor a brand new figure from the new game was released in 2023, part of the now-established Gaming Greats series within the wider Galaxy Collection. This 'Survivor' Cal Kestis was part of Wave 10 of the Galaxy collection, sitting in the period of plastic-free packaging so arrives without a window and box art to depict the figure and contents. The release is number 17 in the Gaming Greats series of the Galaxy Collection and the blue-hued artwork sits between the Jedi; Suriviror Battle Droid and Scorch from Republic Commando. This is an entirely new Cal Kestis release in his generic 'Survivor' outfit with a blue vest over a cream shirt, brown trousers with black and brown boots and a gunslinger belt with a holster that straps around his left thigh. The main colours are executed through the basic plastic with further detail added sparingly as required such as the yellow and light blue patches on the vest, the silver data canisters on his left arm, and the brown strap that fits across his torso. The head sculpt is new and is the older shorter-haired Cameron Monaghan likeness, again part of the default settings for the Jedi: Survivor character selection. Facial print technology is used to enhance the likeness including stubble around the line of the jaw. The full body is pinless with most of the joints incorporated within the sculpt of the body and clothing. There are 19 joints in total and a full range of motion supported by butterfly shoulders for the upper arms alongside the usual shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints. The legs too are fully mobile with the holster and belt moving with the leg joints. Cal comes with a couple of accessories, the first is the blaster he uses in the game which is a silver cast piece with a painted burgundy grip. It fits into Cal's left hand which arrives with a trigger finger feature and is of course accurate to the game modes. When not in use it slots into the holster. We also get Cal's lightsaber with its elongated grey hilt and two-pronged emitter. The blade is blue transparent plastic and removable. The saber hilt fits into either or both hands and it can also be hung on Cal's belt by way of a loop and hook design which is much more secure than most of the ones we have seen on other lightsaber-wielding characters. Cal also comes with BD-1 a direct re-pack of the first release with BD-1 arriving in his standard white paintwork with red trim. Other details are added in silver and black to pick out other components around his head and body. BD-1 has five points of articulation with each leg hinged at the 'knee' and 'hip' and a further small joint between the main body and head to allow that to rotate and be tilted, mimicking BD-1's mannerisms from the game. BD-1 can stand on its own - although the figure we bought had a very loose leg on BD-1 which does impede that stability - but still does not connect to Cal Kestis in any way, with Hasbro still not having engineered a way for BD-1 to ride on Kestis' back as seen in the game. This is a very impressive release for the Black Series in most aspects with a strong likeness to the game character and the actor who plays him, great articulation, and a good set of accessories. Considering the customization on the game there is an argument for Hasbro to have pushed this into Deluxe territory and given us some wider custom options such as ponchos or alternative head/hair combinations. The only issue with the set is the lack of improvement on BD-1 since the 2021 release and its inability to be fitted onto the Cal figure for posing. • Mezco One:12 Collective Marvel's Doctor Octopus

Mezco has announced the release of its One:12 Collective Doc Ock figure from its Marvel collection. The comic book classic Doctor Octopus will feature three different heads, swap-out hands, a removable lab coat, and his iconic tentacles. These are also interchangeable between long, medium, and short versions with 20 variant claws. Doc Ock is a general Mezco release that ships between November 2024 and January 2025. Scientist, inventor, and criminal mastermind — Marvel’s Doctor Octopus joins the One:12 Collective lineup! Straight from the comic pages, the One:12 Collective Doctor Octopus is dressed in his classic green bodysuit, featuring a removable lab coat and three interchangeable head portraits in varying expressions. The maniacal menace wields his signature weapon— sets of four highly posable, tentacle-like arms in different lengths that are assembled on his back, complete with multiple interchangeable claws for each arm. After being exposed to atomic radiation during a lab accident, Dr. Otto Octavius found himself fused to mechanical tentacle-like arms. The same incident also has altered his mind, allowing him to mentally control his newly fused appendages, tragically at the cost of mental stability. He will now stop at nothing to gain more power and defeat his perennial foe, Spider-Man. To manage our storage costs, news article images are archived after 12-months. • Review: Star Wars Black Series Gaming Greats Night Brother Archer, Jedi: Fallen Order

"Extremely hostile to outsiders, Nightbrothers are skilled fighters proficient with a variety of weapons. Among their ranks may be found archers, capable of launching ranged energy bow attacks with deadly accuracy." A good proportion of the Jedi: Fallen Order storyline was set on Dathomir, and instead of the usual Imperial Stormtrooper fodder, these missions set Cal Kestis against a swathe of Night Brothers. Hasbro converted these into a Gaming Greats release in 2021 with the Night Brother Warrior, and followed this up in 2022 with the figure we are reviewing here - the Night Brother Archer. The Archer was part of the Gaming Greats line and featured the usual slanted side packaging with turquoise blue colouring. It features the Gaming Greats hexagonal sticker on the window and was number 10 in the series positioned between the Umbra Operative Battlefront Clone Trooper and Sev from Republic Commando. The Night Brother base figure dates back to the 2021 Publishing Wave 'Sith Apprentice' Darth Maul which itself re-uses the entire bottom half of the original 2013 Darth Maul from A Phantom Menace. This means we have a newer torso cast in a pinkish-red skin tone and embellished with some lighter salmon-coloured patches on the chest and arms. This is then painted over with black markings and a white circular emblem on the chest. The neck is an individual piece and is cast in black and connects the painted black of the chest with the head. The legs are the same as the original Night Brother and feature brown cast legs with voluminous trouser legs that tuck into glossier black shin-height boots. Over the top of the legs sits a softer skirt piece with a built-in belt and painted silver button. The head is executed in a reverse of the body cast in black and then painted over with the soft pink/red skin tone to create the facial patterns. The facial pattern is crisp and most likely applied using some of the facial printing technology as do the eyes. The horns project from the head in bone colour and are sharp and angular and not softened by the use of more flexible plastic. Our Night Brother has 19 points of articulation and is very much a figure of two halves. The legs are the very old 2013 format with pinned double-joint knees. They sit quite wide in their stance to begin with and are not overly easy to pose in upright stances, but can get into kneeling positions. The torso is much more extensive in its movement with arms that include pinless joints at the elbows, and a shoulder that features both the pivot and butterfly joint. The head/neck joint which is ball jointed at both the top and bottom is the most expressive joint allowing the Night Brother to tilt his head adding to his menace. As you would expect from the title, our Night Brother Archer comes with an energy bow - a new addition to the Black Series line and cast with a grey body and a red 'string'. While other energy weapons, particularly Omega's Energy Bow for comparison, the energy element has been created like a lightsaber with a translucent coloured plastic. Sadly, the Night Brother gets a dull painted red over the grey which is clearly less impressive. The bow fits into either of the figure's hands, the right being the easier of the two to slot around the inner grip of the bow shaft. There is sufficient articulation for a handful of 'drawn' positions, but there is of course no projectile for the weapon to fire with as such. These Gaming Greats of 2021/2022 were very much on the table because they could re-purpose other figures and the Night Brothers are a good example of that, directly repainting the Sith Apprentice Maul and throwing in a cheaper to develop a new weapon. While the weapon does the job, it really could have been better and that sums up the Night Brother Archer as a whole - a good release, without being great suffering more from the figure it originates from and the legs in particular. Joe (Action Force) and M.A.S.K. while also dabbling in He-Man, Transformers and Ghostbusters. I launched The Mephitsu Archives in 2015 with a view of creating a UK focused site or these figures where fans can pick up the latest action figure news, read reviews and get information on where to buy their figures and what is currently on store shelves. I hope I am delivering that to you guys...
