- Review: Marvel Legends Legacy Collection Deadpool
"I didn't ask to be super, and I'm no hero." Ryan Reynold's movie Deadpool made his Marvel Legends debut in 2018, released as part of a wave of releases themed around the Fox X-Men franchise. Deadpool was a 2-pack release with Negasonic Teenage Warhead who wore her Deadpool 2 outfit. With Deadpool's return in 2024 and his move into the wider MCU Hasbro has initially whetted our appetite for Deadpool Marvel Legends by re-releasing the original 2018 Deadpool - along with a Logan figure from the same series - badging these as Deadpool Legacy releases. The Legacy banner has been used previously for Black Panther and where figures are released quite sometime after the original movie was released. These Deadpool Legacy figures come in a squared-off box as all the Hasbro lines move to a consistent packaging basis, Deadpool (and Logan) are some of the first figures to launch with this new packaging and not the long-standing scooped side boxes. The base colour is black with the deep red used on the Deadpool logo mirrored by the card backing for the figure. Artwork still sits on the right-hand side with Deadpool making his heart symbol with his hands. The rear of the box uses the larger Deadpool symbol with Deadpool himself posed underneath. There is no text or synopsis of the figure at all. Out of the box and this is the identical figure as released in 2018 and while there is some very minor paint variations as you'd expect from differing factory runs 6-years apart, there is nothing in this new set that would warrant you picking up this figure if you already have the original - and that is fine, it is the way these Legacy Collection releases are positioned in the wider Marvel Legends series. Deadpool's suit is expertly recreated in a 6-inch scale with the predominant red colouring with black panelling down the side of the torso and across the shoulders. The suit is textured and also includes nicks and scratched battle damage, but there is no additional paint weathering. The only key paint additions to the suit are silver buckles on the chest. The bett and chest strap are separate pieces with the belt brown in colour with silver clips and a red Deadpool logo buckle. The upper chest strap is black, also with some silver buckle detailing, and comes up and over the left shoulder and reconnects to the belt on the rear side. Deadpool is also geared up with a knife holster on his left lower leg, twin holsters strapped to his thigh and a twin sheath for his swords on his back. None of these are removable. These are all working pieces and line up with the inclusive accessories. If we start with the holsters, there is a change here vs the original figure where the guns were glued into the holsters, and a second set of more sci-fi-themed guns were included - in this 2024 version, the handguns are now packed loose and are the more accurate versions vs the ones Wade uses in the movie. These are black with no paint apps and fit into the triggered hands included when not in the holsters. The included knife is relatively simple in its design but does feature a painted silver blade. It slots securely into the shin holster, and then into one of the gripping hands included for Deadpool. These hands also work with the Katana swords. Like the knife, these are simple in execution with a black painted grip and silver blade. When Deadpool is not using these, they sit in the rear cross sheath. The accessories are finalised with Deadpool's unicorn soft toy. A fun piece cast in white with some colouring added for the blue eyes, and the gold unicorn horn. As mentioned already, Deadpool features plenty of hand options - four sets in total - with options for holding the guns, the swords, and then two other sets recreating clenched fists for hand-to-hand combat, and a pair of open gesturing hands. Like the original release, the gripping hands are painted with the silver panel on the rear of the hands - while the open hands and clenched fists have this bit left unpainted. Deadpool has with 21 points of articulation in total allowing a wide ranging selection of poses for use with any of the included accessories. The butterfly shoulders work brilliantly with the swords and guns, allowing the hands to come in further in front of the torso. While the legs - which still feature pinned joints - allow Wade to kneel, sit or walk/run with suitable aftermarket stands for the more dynamic poses. Like the older format figures alot the joints are heavily ratcheted and the spaces between each ratchet do leave a wobble to the joint which is most noticeable around the elbows and hips The Deadpool Legacy Collection release puts a relatively sought-after and expensive after-market figure back onto shelves as well as hypes up what we will see come the Summer and when Deadpool & Wolverine hits movie shelves. This certainly won't be the only Deadpool figure this year, and we must hope that the Deadpool 3 figures do just as good a job as this one. - We speculate on the Hasbro Ghostbusters HasLab project due to launch in Autumn 2024
On Ghostbusters Day 2024 (8th June) Hasbro teased a future Ghostbusters-themed HasLab project which would launch in the Autumn of 2024. While no details were provided there was a preview image and a new logo for the project which very much indicated the project would be ECTO-1 related. We of course got to thinking about what a Ghostbusters Plasma Collection 1/12 (6-inch) scale ECTO-1 might look like, what might be included in the set, and most importantly what it might cost. With a bit of research and in particular a look at the 1/6 scale ECTO-1 project from Blitzway, then we know a true 6-inch scale ECTO-1 will come in around 24 inches in length. The height should be just over 6-inches tall as seen in the 1984 scenes with ECTO-1 and the team. And of course for maximum potential backers the vehicle would need to be the original 1984 version. Using the 1/18 scale ECTO-1 from Hasbro as inspiration, we would also want some form of lights and sounds built-in, which will increase the pricing. Not all HasLab projects to date have featured lights, and as far as I can tell there have been no sound FX inclusions to date on any of the vehicle-based releases. Figure inclusion is difficult as we know that a HasLab vehicle project is usually supplied with one main figure and then up to three more offered as stretch goals. With ECTO-1 the obvious main inclusive figure in my eyes is Slimer, a critical absence from the Plasma Series - although he does not directly relate to ECTO-1. It is therefore possible that they will include someone like Ray as the main figure, with the other three Ghostbusters as stretch goals - but it would be unclear how these would vary from the figures released already. Of course, stretch goals may end up being alternative items or extras. Price-wise, the most comparable HasLab to date would be the Marvel Legends Ghostrider car which weighed in at 18 inches long with light effects. That was priced at £349 and of course, famously did not fund because of the price point. The other vehicle we can compare against is the G.I. Joe HISS Tank, this was bigger than the Ghost Rider Car at 19 inches long and was cheaper at £299 but didn't include any pricy effects. The £349 price was also applied to the Star Wars release of The Ghost, which was a comparable size to ECTO-1 overall but also lacked any light effects. The final comparison we've looked at is the G.I. Joe Dragonfly as it did include light-up effects and an overall length of 34 inches, albeit this was quite a narrow vehicle. It priced at £289. The final question is whether this will back. So far, all Ghostbusters HasLab projects have backed - and more so - but these have all been 1:1 scale props. We would need somewhere close to 8-9k in backers based on comparable projects, and that feels a challenge considering the more niche market in which Ghostbusters sits compared to Star Wars, G.I. Joe, and Marvel - although popularity isn't always a guide having seen the Rancor and Ghost Rider car fail in previous projects. The key is making sure the piece is perceived as providing a reasonable level of value for money. So there we go. Our expectations would be a 24-inch long ECTO-1 with sound and light effects for the siren. There would be a price tag of circa £349.99 and for that we'd like at least one figure - ideally something new to the line like Slimer. Whether any of this will be accurate we will have to wait and see?
