“So many universes. So much chaos. They need to be silenced.” Following his reveal as the main villain for the final storyline of Marvel’s What If? Season 1, Infinity Ultron was confirmed as the build-a-figure for the first of two Marvel Legends Disney+ waves of 2022. He would be split into 6 of the 7 sets in the wave alongside figures from Hawkeye, The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Moon Knight - with only the Moon Knight figure itself not including any pieces.  With all parts collected, Infinity Ultron is a standard BAF build with the arms and legs connecting to the main torso which was also pre-connected to his cloak. The lance he uses as a weapon also requires assembly if you are using the full piece.  Ultron stands just a touch taller than a standard Marvel Legends figure, and this is underwhelming in terms of his status in What If? While never shown directly comparable to other MCU characters, when he is battling the Armoured Watcher he is a similar height to him - yet the Watcher BAF from 2021 dwarfs this version of Infinity Ulton. The figure is sculpted with a definite animated style including slim hips and legs and over-exaggerated torso. This is fine and works well with the other figures created in this same style like Star-Lord T’Challa or Howard the Duck - but it does look a bit out of place where figures for What If? Have been created using an existing MCU figure with real-world proportions.  Ultron is cast predominantly in a silver material which has a degree of gloss finish, but is not quite metallic looking - it's similar to what we’ve had on Iron Man figures in the past and it can show stress marks in the plastic a bit too easily. Over this are golden trims and panels and the five infinity stones are painted across the chest and forehead in the correct colours and pattern. The red cast cloak is a softer plastic and is connected to the torso with no options for easy removal. It also features gold trim as a full line along the base. Infinity Ulton’s lance weapon is assembled from two sections that clip together to make the full lance although the piece featuring the grip handle can be used on its own. The weapon is considerably in its dimensions standing much taller than Infinity Ultron and likely creating some display issues for anyone with limited space. It uses the same silver plastic as the figure and lacks any real decor or details with just a handful of touches of gold paint. Infinity Ultron has a basic 18 points of pinless articulation with the elbow and knee joints very wide ranging in their movement. Sadly the fixed cloak and the huge shoulder armour panels restrict both arm and leg motions leaving Infinity Ultron with just a handful of posing options - all of which are standing and with the arms never more than chest height. Even the torso joint adds little extra movement, although the head gets quite a free reign of positions. It is worth noting that while the joints all are relatively secure, there is a lot of play between ‘ratchets’ and Infinity Ultron suffers from a lot of wobble in the lower joints.  Killmonger Head is NOT included, shown as a confirmation of compatibility Infinity Ultron does not come with an unmasked head with the Vision face underneath, which is a shame. It was also too early to reflect his return in Season 2 and then his armour being taken over by Killmonger. What is quite cool is that the What If? Killmonger head does fit onto this body, and it looks pretty good for those who prefer that look from Season 2. Overall the figure underwhelms across nearly every aspect of size, design, articulation and decor. One for the die-hard What If? Collectors only. “Hey…Hey! Watch the feathers” Howard the Duck’s MCU debut came during the post-credits scene in Guardians of the Galaxy where he was being held by The Collector. This iteration of Howard would then go on to feature in the first season of Marvel’s What If?, with appearances in episodes 2 and 7 wearing the same suit and tie as seen in Guardians. He would go on to appear again in Season 2 of the show, but it was this Season 1 look that brought Howard his first Marvel Legends appearance.  Howard the Duck was a release in the second full Disney+ wave of 2022 that also featured other characters from What If? alongside others from Loki and WandaVision. The wave featured a Khonshu build-a-figure from Moon Night, and was also one of the first waves to feature plastic-free packaging which removed the visible window, and the contents are shown via illustrative artwork only - which also saw the BAF checklist move from its traditional card back position to the left-hand side spine. Howard is as you would expect a smaller figure compared to our usual 6-inch Marvel Legends, and he stands to just above the waist height of a standard figure. He is designed to be wearing his orange/brown suit seen in Guardians but with an emphasis on the animated look from What If? The suit features little decor other than a painted belt, painted shirt collar and tie, and a handful of buttons on Howard’s waistcoat. His feet are of course duck feet in bright orange with grey ‘toenails’. The hands are a white finish with three fingers and a thumb, but no obvious feathered texture. Howard’s head sculpt also uses the slightly off-white ‘duck down’ colouring and here the animated styling is more apparent with more exaggeration to his features including the slight ‘quiff’ of hair/feathers pointing out from under his trilby hat. The hat is an interesting choice considering he doesn’t wear one during his What If? Scenes - this may have been an early concept that Hasbro ran with, but that never made it to screen. There is no significant decor application to the head other than the black dot eyes and Howard’s bright orange duckbill. Howard has really been sold short on articulation with just 10 points of limited articulation. While he is a smaller build, there is no attempt to articulate the legs at all - with a fixed lower body and just some rotation where the feet plug into the trousers. The upper torso fairs slightly better with shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints for the arms as well as a torso ball joint, and neck joint. This restricts Howard to relatively limited poses with his arms and we don’t even get any additional hands to make those gestures more emotive.  Howard features no accessories at all, we even miss out on the cocktail glass we see him swigging at the end of Guardians. Hasbro has tried to add some ‘value for money’ by including an additional What If? Character accessory in the shape of Scott Lang’s head and jar from the Zombies episode of Season 1. The Scott Lang head is created in the same way a standard Legends head would be with skin tone plastic, additional hair piece, and some level of photo-realistic printing - although the style of the head is certainly animated in terms of proportions and styling.  Scott’s head is fixed into a grey circular base as seen in the Zombies episode, and this is then covered by a clear plastic bell jar that connects to the base and encases the head. There is of course little you can do with a zero articulated head in a jar other than have him on display. This would likely be best served along with the Zombie What If? figures and Zombie-Slayer Spider-Man considering there is no real connection here with Howard the Duck. The fact we have a Howard the Duck Marvel Legends is pretty impressive, but there have been significant shortcuts taken to bring him to market - particularly on articulation and accessories. The hatted head is also a strange choice considering what we see in Howard’s episodes and is most likely taken from concept art - another opportunity was missed here in not including a different head option either uncharted or even with a varied expression. Instead, we get an alternative (of sorts) Scott Lang head and this feels like an afterthought and has limited value, not even offering an option to be swapped with another full Ant-Man figure to create the What If? version of Scott - which would have been an interesting bonus. This one is probably one for die-hard Howard the Duck fans in the main as well as those who wish to complete the Khonshu BAF. "The Champion of HYDRA has risen." Following his appearance in Season 1 of Marvel’s What If? a new Marvel Legends figure of Red Skull was released as part of the second of two Disney+ waves in 2022 alongside other What If figures as well as from Loki and WandaVision, with a build-a-figure included of Khonshu from Moon Knight. The wave would use plastic-free packaging so the figure was simply illustrated on the box, with the BAF checklist moving to replace one of the two art panels on the left-hand side.  The Marvel Legends What If figures to date have yet to establish a true style compared to say the Spider-Man Spider-Verse figures which are truly entrenched in their animation style. The What If figures are either built from the ground up in an animated style such as T’Challa Star-Lord or are repurposed MCU figures given a more animated colour scheme. Red Skull is the latter of these two options, borrowing the full long coated body from the 2018 SDCC exclusive  release - but instead of a repainted head as has happened with Killmonger, Red Skull then gets a new animated style sculpt. The body is pretty much cast in tones of black with silver painted buttons, straps and a hydra insignia on his belt buckle. Some muted red is used to trim the sleeves and to pick out a sculpted Hydra symbol on the left shoulder - while strangely the right shoulder Hydra symbol is a flat decal. None of this red detail is particularly impressive, with a dull finish due to overpainting onto black, and with quite a bit of paint bleed and some very ragged line work. The head is cast in a much brighter red aligned to the What If style of animation and features exaggerated skull-like features with a very pronounced brow and sunken cheeks compared with the MCU release which was based on the prosthetics worn by the actor Hugo Weaving. Due to the use of the older body, we find a pinned set of articulation for Red Skull with 18 points in total. While the pinned knees and supporting joints provide, on paper, extensive leg articulation - the fully enclosed coat that runs to Red Skull’s ankles limits much of the lower leg movement. The arms are similarly pinned at the elbows and with very old school and quite ugly bicep swivels sitting just below the Hydra symbols.  Red Skull has a single accessory, a re-use of the translucent blue Tesseract that came with the original MCU figure and that has featured with Loki from Infinity War. This is well-scaled for the 6-inch line and is pretty much what it needs to be in terms of a blue cube. Red Skull retains the original splayed right hand to grip the cube, leaving the left hand in a clenched fist. The figure really needed a secondary accessory such as Red Skull's revolver as seen in the show, or something more innovative like the discarded 'human' skin mask to hold in his hand. If you are collecting the What If figures as I am, Red Skull provides another variation of style with an MCU body but an animated style head and that mismatch doesn’t help the figures. Hasbro should have really agreed on a style for What If and stuck to it, and if that meant they wanted to re-use the MCU characters then that decision should have been similar to how they tackled animated shows in the Black Series by executing them in a realistic style. Putting the aesthetic choice aside, the What If Red Skull is a decidedly average release with aged and limited articulation and an accessory with similarly limited options for display. McFarlane have previewed this DC Multiverse Gold Label Collector Edition 2-Pack release of Jonah Hex and his first horse, The General, heading to the McFarlane Store as an exclusive. The two-pack of Demona and Goliath was first previewed on a BestBuy listing back in late 2023, with limited stocks release by BestBuy we understand in the Spring of 2024 - this appears to have been another 'first to market' exclusive. Hasbro has announced another Marvel Legends re-release of a former Walgreens exclusive. Magik, from 2018, will come in the same packaging as the original Walgreens release and comes with her Soulsword, Red Skull, magic effects, and a figurine of Lockheed. The Magik figure will be released in October 2024 in the US. There is no direct availability in the UK, but there will be stores that offer the figure via import at a slightly increased RRP.
