- McFarlane DC Multiverse Platinum Chase figures of Sergeant Rock, Teen Titans Superboy, and Manga-Batman
Big Bad Toy Store has listed a trio of McFarlane DC Multiverse Platinum (Chase) figures for order. We were already aware of these variants of Sergeant Rock, Teen Titans Conner Kent Superboy, and Manga-Batman - but these new listings do give us some further images of each release. At the height the 1960's Batman television shows popularity, a shonen manga magazine in Japan serialized fifty-three chapters, starring The Dark Knight, which were all written by Jiro Kuwata. These rare Batman tales were known by relatively few outside of Japan until award-winning designer Chipp Kidd's 2008 book, Bat-Manga!: The Secret History of Batman in Japan (Pantheon Books), introduced them to a whole new generation of Batman fans. Always at the vanguard of WWII’s bloodiest battles, SERGEANT ROCK shepherded EASY COMPANY from the beaches of NORMANDY into the heartland of GERMANY. The quintessential soldier, FRANK followed orders and got the job done swiftly and efficiently, witnessing extraordinary events during wartime, even the presence of super-powered beings on the battlefield. In later years, FRANK most clearly recalls the horror of seeing men on both sides and an endless parade of greenhorns get maimed or killed. When hostilities ceased, FRANK stayed a soldier, serving his country as both educator and clandestine agent. Some heroes are made, not born. A combination of Superman and Lex Luthor’s DNA, Superboy was an outsider from his inception. Raised in a lab, and aged to maturity in the public spotlight, Superboy went from a young teenager with an attitude to a more mature veteran of the Super Hero team Young Justice. - Review: Star Wars Black Series Mandalorian Nite Owl from The Mandalorian, Galaxy Collection Exclusive
“I hope these two groups get along. They’ve never met. And what little they know of each other they hate” Hasbro is leaning heavily into the Mandalorian for 2024 and in particular the Mandalorians seen in Season 3 of the Disney+ series and the journey to reclaim Mandalore. Across the Summer and Autumn of 2024 there are 5 new figures incoming to bolster your Mandalorian Covert and the first of these is the September 2024 release of the Nite Owl Mandalorian. This is a single release and exclusive to Walmart in the US, but sold through the Fan Channel here in the UK including Hasbro Pulse. It is one of the first figures to move into the new squared box packaging with the older Galaxy Collection slanted artwork side removed. The overall design principles remain the same with a matt black box and an accent colour assigned to each Star Wars property. For The Mandalorian this burnt umber colour scheme continues allowing some level of continuity from the previous box type. The numbering is also continued, with the Nite Owl being number 38 in the Mando collection sitting after the Mines of Mandalore Din Djarin release and before the Mandalorian Privateer. The side artwork is retained and done in the same style as the older boxes and it does connect into the larger montage, but there is a definite darkening of the colours and shading with the Nite Owl imagery. The background info is limited and talks about the Nite Owls joining forces with The Children of the Watch. The new packaging design also features a minor change inside the box with the card back of the figure within the box now colour coded and inclusive of what looks like a planetary scene. In hand, our Nite Owl is very simply a repaint of the 2021 Koska Reeves figure who herself utilises the Bo-Katan body. The main body of our Nite Owl is a purple tone with the armoured panels in dark blue with gunmetal panels. The gauntlets are also gun metal in colour with the left bracer brighter than the right and inclusive of a touch of gold detailing. Gun Metal is also used on the panels on either side of the figure's thighs. The outfit is finished with the single holster gun slinger belt with a burgundy base colour and painted silver and brown clasps & straps. Nite Owl decals are added to either shoulder Pauldron. The helmet is the same as Koska Reeves and there is a sculpted head under the helmet with a flesh-tone finish and with a hairline that indicates it is a flesh-cast Bo-Katan head. The helmet is glued into place. It features the same dark blue as the amoured body with silver panels round the back and framing the visor which itself is a gloss black. A smaller silver insignia sits above the visor and the helmet also features an adjustable range finder in silver and black that can pivot down and sit adjacent to the Nite Owl's visor. Our Nite Owl comes with her jetpack and this plugs into a single hole on the reverse of the figure with reasonable security. Like the armour it is blue in colour with grey panels rather than the more metallic silver pieces other than a strip down the centre panel. There are no moving parts or options to plug-in effect pieces like some of the other Mando jetpacks. We have a single weapon, a WESTAR-35 Mandalorian Blaster, also exactly as included with both Bo-Katan and Reeves. The sleek weapon has a dull metallic finish with a slightly brighter grip and it can be slotted into either hand on the Nite Owl who retains the dual grips with trigger fingers that originated with Bo-Katan. When not in use the blaster slips into the working holster on the belt. Our Nite Owl features 19 points of pinless articulation. The legs feature the standard hip and knee joints supported with ankle rockers and a thigh swivel. These facilitate plenty of options in posing our Nite Owl including kneeling shots and more dynamic running or flying options with a stand. The upper torso includes a hidden joint in the waist with limited movement, while the arms are more extensive in their movement. The upper shoulder armour retracts into the chest piece when the shoulder joints are raised with the combined butterfly joints allowing the arms to swing in or out from the main body. Elbow joints work to the 90-degree position with further wrist joints to line up your blaster or align the wrist weapons. The joints are all tight and secure with no obvious flaws, and despite her slimmer frame, the Nite Owl is secure once posed into your display. The Mandalorian Nite Owl is what we have come to expect from many of the Star Wars Black Series retailer exclusives, a variant or rework of an existing character. There is nothing aesthetically wrong with the Nite Owl as a figure with a crisp paint job, strong articulation and an appropriate accessory. She is not necessarily based on any onscreen character directly that I can see, although is likely modelled closely on the Privateers we see in the background when Bo-Katan challenges Axe Woves to reclaim her fleet and when the Privateers arrive on Nevarro. The re-use of Koska Reeves in her entirety is masked partly by the new paintwork, but like the Mandalorian Fleet Captain, I would have preferred to see some minor physical variances like a variant helmet, belt or jetpack. A recommended figure with army-building potential for those expanding their Mandalorian Covert. - McFarlane DC Direct Silver Age Joker, Crisis on Infinite Earths Robin
We have more McFarlane DC Direct releases incoming with pre-orders live as of the 12th of September for The Joker from DC: The Silver Age, a Crisis on Infinite Earths Robin from Earth-2. Joker will feature his cane, a second pair of hands, and a further hand holding a fish. Robin will include a soft goods cape, alternative hands and an alternative head. These are McFarlane Digital releases which means each figure also comes with a digital collectible download. They are due to ship in November 2024 and are available at McFarlane stockists. We've added these to our McFarlane Collector Database Debuting only 11 issues after Batman, Robin quickly earned his place as an invaluable ally by proving himself in fight after fight. Unlike many characters that debuted in the Golden Age of Comics in the 1930s and 1940s, Robin’s tragic backstory has changed little in the years since, despite continuity-altering events such as Crisis on Infinite Earths. Throughout all his incarnations, Dick Grayson was the son of circus aerialists, who was adopted by Bruce Wayne (aka Batman) after his parents were killed by gangster Anthony Zucco. After years of fighting by Batman’s side, Robin eventually left the Batcave to attend college at Hudson University. Once a small-time crook, The Joker fell into a vat of chemicals that turned his skin white, his hair green, and his lips red—like a crazed clown. His crimes always involve pranks and jokes ending with twisted punchlines that are only funny to The Joker. He may look like he’s clowning around, but this guy is bad news for Batman and Gotham City! - Review: Indiana Jones Adventure Series Raiders of the Lost Ark Indiana Jones (Cairo) Exclusive
“I see your taste in friends remains consistent” Hasbro’s Indiana Jones Adventure Series line was heavily made up of Indiana Jones variations from across the franchise, although the initial releases for Raiders of the Lost Ark both focused on the earlier sequences of the film with Indy in his iconic jacket. It was later in 2023 when a release was announced based on the Cairo scenes and therefore providing us with the jacketless look Indy sported once he arrived in Cairo and pretty much through to the end of the movie. The figure was an exclusive, and despite being a single figure with a similar level of accessories as the other general releases, it was priced by Amazon and Hasbro Pulse at a higher RRP of $33.99 / £34.99. The Cairo Market Indy uses the same closed box packaging as the other Indy figures with a sandy desert colouring to the main box overlaid with the iconic map markings we see during Indy’s adventures. There is no specific film logo used, instead the box is headed with a general Indiana Jones Adventure Series logo and an image of the figure in a pose with its accessories. One side of the box then features artwork of Indy and is overlaid at the bottom with a further illustration depicting part of the Cairo Market fist fight. The other side of the box features a checklist of other releases. As an exclusive and not part of a wave, this checklist is a little bit more random than usual with figures pictured including those from both the Temple of Doom and Dial of Destiny, yet oddly nothing from Raiders that would complement this figure. The rear of the box has no background or details relating to the figure, just another posed image and a smaller checklist of contents. Inside the figure and accessories are wrapped into the Indiana Jones wax paper and held in check by an inner brown cardboard tray. This Cairo version of Indy borrows the legs from the original Raiders release with a brown cast plastic and weathered paintwork over the top, particularly around the base of each leg to create a worn effect. Despite having access to the Temple of Doom shirted torso, the Cairo version is a features a new and accurate shirt piece in beige and with further weathering. The torso underneath is undoubtedly shared with the two Temple of Doom figures, while the arms are also new featuring shirt sleeves to the elbows and exposed forearms and hands. The costume if finished off with Indy’s two belts - the holster belt being an individual piece with the holster on one side and a clip on the other for his whip. Indy also comes with his saddle bag across his chest and shaped to sit at his hip - this is removable if needed. The head for this figure is not the original Raiders release, but is taken from the Temple of Doom Indy and features a slightly more concerned look with a partly open mouth. The likeness to Harrison Ford is there, but few of the Adventure Series figures have truly nailed the look to the extent we know Hasbro can and have achieved on soem figures from other lines. The facial printing positions the eyes, mouth and the stubble and while the latter looks off close up it helps the overall likeness when viewed from a distance when Indy is on your display. The hat is fixed in place and sadly is missing the tilting function we did see on the Last Crusade Indy . It is cast in a base brown softer plastic, the rim, in particular, being flexible, with a painted darker brown band and some weathering to lighten the folds and edges to add wear and tear. We have the standard - for Indy - 19 points of pinless articulation with a solid range of movement in both the legs and the upper body. Indy has plenty of display options including action stances with or without the accessories and he is able to kneel or sit as well as be posed in more dynamic positions with the help of a stand. The Adventure Series has always been generous with Indy and his accessories, and the Cairo set continues this providing Indy with three individual sets of hands. The clenched fists allow Indy to replicate the fist fights - although we have no Cairo henchmen in the line to pose him with. The other hands have specific roles as detailed below. Unlike other Hasbro lines that use a wrist peg, the Indy figures have a socket on the hand leaving the peg as part of the wrist. That removes any visible peg joint other than the gap itself between wrist and hand - but also makes swapping over more delicate and the hands themselves a little less mobile with no direct pivot leaving them with a marginally level of movement around the base of the wrist. The smaller gripping hands are to be used with the two included whip accessories. Like most of the releases to date, the whips are a coiled version to hold or hang on his belt, and an unfurled in-motion version. Both are detailed with a pattern in the whip itself and at the base - but they lack any paintwork and are cast in a plastic that is a bit too bright. The extended whip is temperamental for posing and requires some patience to get the whip in a suitable position. It is also susceptible to gravity and won't hold its position for extended periods from certain positions. The coiled whip does sit well in the belt strap, and this has certainly been improved upon for its holding power compared to the initial Raiders of the Lost Ark figures. The handgun feels small as an accessory but is probably scaled well enough. It features no paintwork and no real detail overall coming shaped to fit in Indy’s right hand or into the holster. The holster still features the annoying flexible strap that should plug into a hole on the top section to secure the gun into place. Actually getting the strap into position and having it stay there is much more difficult than it needs to be. The final hand is an outstretched left hand that I feel is best employed with the final accessory - the monkey that originally came with Marion . The monkey itself considering the size is very well-detailed inclusive of sculpted fur, a waistcoat and painted features. It is articulated too at the tail, arms, and head and this articulation is critical in getting the Monkey into a display pose with Indy. You can have him sat on the floor with him, but you can also replicate the scenes when he faces down Belloq and have the monkey sat on his arm or shoulder. In these poses the arms and in particular the tail are used to have our monkey sit still and secure. The Cairo Indiana Jones Adventure Series exclusive fills in a particularly crucial look for Indy worn during much of Raiders of the Lost Ark and it does so in a way that both re-uses parts, but also retains accuracy to the onscreen costume by having new parts exclusive to this figure such as the shirt and arms. The accessories are all relevant to the scenes in Cairo - although none of them are really new, and the whips and gun carry with them the same lack of detail and poor paint work as the originals. There are also flaws carried forward with the holster, although the whip strap has definitely been tweaked. The main downside of the figure is the exclusivity and price with no perceived added value in the box vs a standard Indy release. There is also a lack of complementary figures to have Indy face down in Cairo, and while he can be displayed with Sallah and Marion - the lack of any Cairo henchmen or indeed the swordsman so the iconic face off from the Cairo Market can be recreated.
