The first wave of Star Wars Black Series figures from The Acolyte hit stores in September 2024 a couple of months after the show had aired on Disney+. The Galaxy Collection Wave 17 was entirely made up of Acolyte characters including four Jedi as well as the key characters of Mae and Osha.  The Acolyte series within the Galaxy Collection features a new red-shaded accent colour and the figures are packed in the new squared-off box style with the numbering now included on both the front and the back of the box. Jedi Master Sol is number 02 in the Acolyte series with the side artwork putting him between Osha Aniseya and his Padawan Jecki Lon in the wider montage. The rear of the box features a cropped version of the same side illustration as well as a short piece of background text that is the same on all 6 Acolyte releases from Wave 17 giving us just a synopsis about the show - most likely to avoid spoilers had these figures arrived early. The new box design also now features a colour-coordinated backing card for the figure with the deep red Acolyte colour scheme offset against Sol’s Jedi Robes. Rather than being a plain colour backing, there is an illustration within the backing card and the same backing imagery as is used on the side art - for Sol, this features a ship interior. Like Jedi Master Indara , Jedi Master Sol is depicted in the look we see in real time during the events of The Acolyte rather than his younger look in the flashback scenes from Brendok. Rather than the white High Republic Jedi Robes he wears in the temple, Sol is in his darker mission robes with an on orange-hued soft rubber tunic over a generic body and a pair of plain brown trousers with burgundy boots. The central tunic carries most of the decor for the body with lighter panels at each side of the skirt and at the neckline with this lighter beige then used for the arms of the robes. The belt - part of the lower skirt piece - is brown and black with both gold and silver detailing. Similar ornate flourishes can be found on Sol’s gloves and wrist bracers. Like all the Jedi from Wave 17, Sol has a soft goods tailored Jedi robe. This is stitched so the hood is now fixed downward and cannot be raised over the head. The material remains as it has been for a number of years and lacks the weight to fold naturally around the body particularly on the arms although with some patience the overall look can be rewarding. The robes are of course fully removable and can be discarded for a more dynamic look for Sol. The head sculpt is perhaps the softest of the wave, with the likeness to actor Lee Jung Jae passable. The head doesn't quite look as good as we've seen from recent releases - Indara from this wave being a good benchmark. The proportions do not seem quite there with the figure featuring a more angular face with sunken cheeks and a more pointed chin with mouth inverted and turned down. Facial printing also appears off and almost reverts back to pre-face tech printing execution with relatively simplistic eyes and eyebrows and limited facial shading or texture. Sol’s hair is an individual piece in jet black plastic with his longer hair tied back in a messy ponytail. The head appears to have been going for that shocked almost haunted look we see on Sol’s face, and this is more visible from a side-on position than face-on. Sol’s lightsaber is his only accessory, a sleek grey and black hilt complete with a peg which can then connect it to his belt for a holstered look. The translucent blue blade clips into place for lit lightsaber displays and the hilt will then fit in either hand or into both hands thanks to the articulation in the arms. Like Indara, Sol is also given a trigger finger on his left hand which seems an odd choice for a Jedi and that can look marginally out of place when holding his saber. Sol comes with what is becoming a new standard for the Black Series with 17 points of pinless articulation in total. The thigh swivel is now gone completely with the rotation it used to provide added to the knee joint. This aids the look overall and removes that ongoing issue where figures often had visible colour variations between the top of the leg and the lower thigh. While Indara did receive a boot cut to add further swivel in the legs, the boot and lower leg for Sol are fixed. The arms feature wrist, elbow, and shoulder joints with the latter also inclusive of a butterfly joint which helps widen the range of the arms and facilitates those two-handed saber poses. Sol does include the torso joint disguised by his belt, and a dual joint neck which helps with head position and characterisation of Sol on display. Jedi Master Sol is perhaps not quite at the level we saw of Jedi Master Indara in terms of overall facial likeness, but he does feature an impressively detailed set of Jedi robes complete with intricate belt, bracers, and armoured gloves. His robes work well enough and are no better or worse than any Jedi soft goods we’ve had before. Articulation is good and reaching a point now where the overall look of the figure and the scope of the posing feel in sync with neither sacrificed for the other. We also get his lightsaber to complete the look inclusive of an option to clip it to its belt.  The greedy among us may have wished for a younger head sculpt considering the robes are very similar between the events in the present and the past, but that may be a variant for the future as maybe the High Republic era white temple robes which have become a trademark of that entire era of the Star Wars timeline - although the fandom noise around The Acolyte may very well now disrupt further figure development. Rather than being a plain colour backing, there is an illustration within the backing card - for Indara this depicts some architecture, an arch of sorts as seen in her first scenes on Ueda in the series. The figure depicts Master Indara as we see her in the opening scenes of The Acolyte on Ueda when she battled Mae. She is wearing white inner robes with no further paint application beyond the base plastic with the upper tunic featuring a textured quilting finish. Indara is wearing a brown painted leather belt with an ornate gold buckle and plain knee-high brown boots. The belt does show signs of paint bleeding where it is painted over the robes rather than being an individual piece.  Over the robed body is a set of soft goods Jedi robes with a tailored hood piece folded back and stitched into place - it cannot be moved to sit over Indara’s head. The robes sit well enough, but are not considerably improved on versions we’ve seen with other Jedi characters in the past and still suffer from sitting too flat in places without the heft in the material to fold and crease as we see on the actual costume. Indara’s head sculpt is a good likeness to Carrie-Anne Moss and includes facial printing to extend the realism and include the markings to the side of her left eye. The hair is added as an individual piece and features loose strands that frame either side of her face and a more ornate braid at the back with painted silver clips.  Indara includes her lightsaber as an accessory, a new hilt featuring a gunmetal base with bronzed panels. This can be hung on Indara’s belt by way of a plug and socket, or held in either or both hands. Interestingly Indara features a trigger finger right hand despite only coming with a lightsaber so this is likely to be a re-use and looks a little odd when holding the lightsaber hilt and means and the grip itself is too wide for the hilt leaving quite a loose fit. The translucent green blade slots into place for the lit lightsaber effect. Indara has 18 points of articulation with Hasbro losing the often intrusive thigh swivel and adding both a have added a swivel to the knee joint, and to the boot cut on Indara. The upper torso still features a waist ball joint and the arms come with a full range of motion and butterfly shoulders to help with two-handed lightsaber posing in particular. The neck looks to be an individual piece but in terms of movement, it is only jointed where it meets the head which is the only real limiting factor driven by this new configuration of pinless joints. Indara is really engaging to pose with a wide range of motion and some very expressive and expansive posing options can be achieved with or without the robes (one benefit of soft goods usage) with her lightsaber in particular. It is a shame that we still are not getting any spare Jedi hands making force gestures to expand the options further. The Acolyte Black Series release of Indara is a solid release with a good likeness to the character as seen in the Ueda scenes with a reasonably well tailored soft goods robes and a lightsaber accessory. The articulation, despite having the joint count dialled back is surprisingly good and a testament to the engineering of the newer bodies by Hasbro enhancing the overall aesthetics without impeding the movement. It seems the majority of The Acolyte releases will be based on the current events from the show and not the flashback scenes this therefore gives us some variation in Jedi Robes between Indara and her contemporaries. Whether we will see figures from the Brendok flashback scenes is unclear and potentially unlikely considering everything going on around The Acolyte and the Star Wars fandom in general. The new DC Multiverse Gold Label Exclusives of Commander Steel and Sinestro Parallax were previewed a couple of weeks back. Both figures are now listed in full on the Target website with an immediate release in October. Commander Steel will feature a selection of alternative hands. Sinestro comes with a Parallax construct. Both figures also feature the usual collector card and base. McFarlane and the Warhammer Community page have marked Warhammer Day with reveals of the next wave of Warhammer 40k releases from McFarlane. Continuing the Imperial Guard theme is a new figure of a Commissar of the Astra Militarum who features a soft goods black overcoat, bolter, and chain sword. We can then look forward to a new figure of Lieutenant Titus from the Ultramarines and as seen in the new Space Marine II video game. Titus features what looks to be the first removable helmet with sculpted head underneath. He is armed with a Thunderhammer and bolt pistol. Both figures come as full-painted releases and as unpainted Artist Proof releases. All four figures come with collector's card and display stand. These are listed as December releases. McFarlane has announced three new DC Multiverse Platinum Edition 'Chase' releases. Unlike the usual Chase variants short-packed into cases, these are three new figures that will frustrate collectors. The trio includes Effigy from Green Lantern, DC Classics release of The Question, and Shining Knight from Seven Soldiers of Victory. You can enter an EQL run fair draw on the McFarlane website for a chance to purchase each of these. These are now added to our extensive McFarlane Collector Database Disgruntled loser Martin Van Wyck was abducted by the alien Controllers and given fire-based powers before being deemed a “failed experiment” and sent back to Earth. When using his powers, Van Wyck transformed into a white-skinned, flame-headed being and took the name Effigy. With no other ambitions, he wreaked havoc, setting fire to the Hollywood sign. After a battle with Green Lantern, he was reclaimed by the Controllers. Effigy later returned to Earth, where he fell for Killer Frost, but when she was buried in an avalanche, he callously abandoned her. The villain then served in the Society and Libra’s Secret Society of Super-Villains and was briefly exiled to the planet of Salvation. Effigy suffered a gruesome death during Final Crisis, when The Spectre burned him alive in a lantern. When Crisis on Infinite Earths first reshaped continuity, The Question migrated to Earth from another reality. His career ended when he died from cancer, but he ensured there would always be answers by training Gotham City detective Renee Montoya to become a new Question. Following Flashpoint, The Question was reimagined as a mystic enigma. Eons ago—with Pandora and the Phantom Stranger—he faced the Council of Eternity to answer for his sins. Defiant and unrepentant, his punishment was having his identity and visage magically erased. In modern times, he sought Pandora’s Box, hoping to answer The Question of his identity. He united with the Phantom Stranger and Pandora as the Trinity of Sin, but eventually betrayed them. After this, he vanished, no one knows where. The gender-fluid, immortal knight Ystin has also been known as Ystina, Sir Justin, and the Shining Knight, and was present at Merlin’s rebirth in Avalon as Adam One. As one of the Demon Knights—ancestors of Stormwatch—Ystina battled alien and demonic threats. Ystina was granted immortality after a sip from the Holy Grail during the fall of Camelot, but was cursed with an unquenchable desire to drink from the Grail again. Ystin rode the winged horse Vanguard, fighting alongside such Demon Knights as Madame Xanadu and Jason Blood. He also wielded the sword known as Caliburn or Excalibur, marking him a champion of Camelot. Ystina fought with the Demon Knights against the vampire Cain and was bitten, fulfilling his vision of one day becoming undead. “It’s treason then” While Palpatintine as seen in the Original Trilogy has had a few releases in the Star Wars Black Series to date across Single , Deluxe , Anniversary and Archive releases, his first Prequel release came in September 2024 with the arrival of the new Darth Sidious release as seen at the climax of Revenge of the Sith. Darth Sidious is part of the Galaxy Collection and released as a Fan Channel shared release alongside the B2 Super Battle Droid. This pairing are one of the last releases in the Galaxy Collection to use the older slanted side packaging.  Sidious is the first Galaxy Collection release for Revenge of the Sith, so is number 01 in the set which will feature a deeper brown accent colour on the character text and artwork. The side art, depicting Sidious in front of the window in his Senate Office, will connect to the Clone Commander Bacara release when that arrives in 2025. The figure is designed to replicate the look of Palpatine/Sidious at the end of Revenge of the Sith following his disfigurement in the battle with Mace Windu. It is pretty much what we see him wearing in the battle with Yoda with a black sculpted body overlaid with deep burgundy soft goods robes. The Palpatine releases had always suffered where the soft goods failed to replicate his hooded look - so for this Sidious release, Hasbro has moved to a blended approach and sculpted the hood over the head and leading down onto the robes with an upper soft goods brown cowl bridging the two elements. The robes featured elasticated cuffs on the sleeves, allowing them to sit on the arms but not enveloping the arms - our figure was prone for the internal stitching and ‘fuzz’ protruding at these sleeve cuffs. The robes are not removable without significant dismantling of the figure - but the body underneath is not the same base as was used on Palpatine. The head sculpt is excellent, capturing the maniacal grin of Sidious with the pale and folded skin of the face surrounding deep-set red sunken eyesockets and a pair of yellow eyes. Facial printing appears to be used to get into the eye details, but the skin and face itself relies more on the light and shadows created by the hood. Sidious is fully articulated under the robes with a pinless body that has at least 16 points of articulation. These allow the figure to be posed, within the confines of the robes and the hood, into a handful of poses but perhaps not the acrobatic elements we see when he battles Yoda.  Sidious comes with his lightsaber with silver and gold hilt and translucent red blade. There is no specific feature to have this snook away in his sleeve, but the elasticated cuff allows it to be posed that way if you wish. The saber fits into the right hand with some degree of two-handed pose enabled by the arm joints although the left hand is in more of a pointing/force gesturing pose.  We also get the Force Lightning handpieces, and these are the same as included with the Deluxe Palpatine with Throne. They are cast in translucent blue with the skin tone of the hand-painted on top and blended into the lighting. The finish is much deeper blue on this pair and the effect - particularly under direct lighting - is more stark. They are quite difficult to swap in and out with the standard hands thanks to a larger plug on the end of the wrist peg - it takes quite a bit of force to get them in and out and there is a risk of damage each time the change is made. Once in situ, the figure's articulation is sufficient to continue having Sidious stand upright while the Force Lighting hands can be posed outward.  Darth Sidious feels an appropriate choice to lead off the Revenge of the Sith Galaxy Collection and is executed (pardon the pun) in a way that blends the benefits of soft goods and sculpted clothing successfully allowing Sidious to maintain a good level of movement while retaining the shape and cut of his robes. The lightsaber and Force Lightning hands give additional context and display options, both working well with the figure providing you are careful with the hand swap. The next logical step for the Revenge of the Sith collection is to provide us with a complementary Yoda to battle Sidious as well as perhaps a deluxe Senatorial platform display and accompanying aids for Sidious, particularly Mas Ameda. McFarlane has released the details for Wave 4 of their 5-inch Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba figures including Zenitsu Agatsuma (Season 2), Inosuke Hashibira (Season 2), and Tanjiro Kamado (Season 2). Each figure comes carded and will include a weapon accessory. These are general releases due on shelves in December 2024 with pre-orders live now at stockists. "Sometimes one must turn the soil to save the garden" Momaw Nadon, also known as Hammerhead as per the original Kenner Star Wars toys, was released in the Star Wars Black Series in September 2024 as a Deluxe release. Nadon was a Fan Channel release so there is no direct retailer exclusivity. He is the first Deluxe release to arrive in the updated squared-off packaging retaining the same height as the single figures, but in a box that was deeper and wider.  He is part of the Galaxy Collection for A New Hope, using the established orange highlight colour on the black box to depict the name, numbering and side artwork. Mowaw Nadon occupies number 7 in the series - as now seen on the front of the box - sitting just after the recent ‘Best Of’ release of Darth Vader . The side artwork for Nadon connects to Vader although the Vader colour finish was of a darker tone.  These newly formatted Galaxy Collection boxes now also feature a colour-coded backing card for the figure matching the overall accent colour. The card is not entirely blank but includes faded background images repeating what we see on the side art - for Nadon it's a shot of one of the Mos Eisley Cantina archways. Momaw Nadon is, as you’d expect from a Deluxe format, a larger and more complex figure than normal standing well over a head taller than your standard humanoid release. He is wearing his brown robes as seen in the brief scenes from A New Hope with lighter sleeves and trouser legs cut off as frayed material at the elbows and knees. There is a belt as part of the lower soft plastic skirt that is painted in brown with a gold buckle and attached into this is a pouch and a twin section of tied rope or twine. If you follow this rope around the back there are a pair of hung pouches and a further pocket. The lower legs are similar to the anatomy of an element with a thick lower leg with creased skin and a three-toed splayed foot. Here the exposed leg is cast in a sandy brown with a darker wash over the top and painted dull orange toenails. The arms are a similar finish, but slimmer and feature less folded skin - ending in a pair of hands with elongated fingers. Scaled with other Cantina releases (and customs) The head sculpt also uses the same colour finish and wash and is shaped as we see the Ithorian on screen with his squinting black eyes on either side of his head and the opening mouthpieces down either side of the head in a slightly lighter brown finish. The head is sitting snugly into a hood of salmon pink with twin-tied ends that sit over his torso.  vs Dok-Ondar from Galaxy's Edge (2023) Momaw Nadon is not the first Black Series Ithorian with the Galaxys Edge release of Dok-Ondar  preceding him from 2023. I was among many who expected Momaw Nadon to be a direct repack of Ondar, albeit without the robes and updated outfit. I was therefore surprised to find that Momaw Nadon is actually a new head sculpt and that the lower arms are also updated - while the rest of the expected re-use including the body and legs is as it was on Dok-Ondar. While Momaw Nadon was never seen in full on screen and was imagined as wearing a one-piece unitard by Kenner, the overall look of the Black Series figures is a combination of designs over the years and it all feels connected and realistic paying homage to the POTF2 releaser that first used the brown robes. vs Kenner 'Hammerhead' and POTF2 Momaw Nadon Articulation follows the usual format with 18 points in total across the Ithorian body. Nadon retains the thigh swivel that is being phased out, while also benefitting from more recent concepts including a full pinless design, butterfly shoulders and a waist swivel built into the cut of the costume. While the Dok-Ondar figure hid most of that under his robes, the Momaw Nadon figure is not impacted aesthetically by the joints. Movement is reasonably widespread for the upper torso with plenty of scope in the arms and surprisingly the head. The legs are partly held in check by the skirt piece, but the knees and ankle rockers do allow some options in leg position with the elephant-like feet providing a very stable base. Momaw Nadon never used a weapon on-screen during the Cantina scenes, but the 1877 Kenner release did pack him with an E-11 Stormtrooper blaster rifle, and Hasbro has used this inspiration for their Black Series release. The gun can fit into the elongated fingers and be held in place - but there are no holstering options. I was also pleased to find that - as others have done successfully and shared online - the large dual blaster from the POTF2 release in the 1990s also fits the new figure and looks right at home with the larger 6-inch scale Nadon.  Using the POTF2 3.75-inch scale dual blaster Hasbro have also leant into Momaw Nadon’s role as a Cantina Patron and included the same trio of cups as packed with the Cantina playset and again with Bib Fortuna. For this release, the base plastic colours have been tweaked to give variation. Each of the three cups can fit into Momaw’s hands to give an alternative look for display, particularly if you are adding him to a Cantina diorama. In Summary, the 2024 Deluxe release of Momaw Nadon exceeds most expectations particularly for not simply repainting Dok-Ondar but for giving us an accurate Momaw Nadon while also drawing on the wider Star Wars universe - including some of the original toys - to bring him to life. The Hammerhead figure is one that has special significance to me as one of the only Kenner toys I never owned - and I am so pleased to now add him to my Black Series collection and to my Cantina display. I was even able to find and purchase a Kenner Hammerhead at the same time to complete the circle.
