  • Review: Marvel Legends Zombie Iron Man from Marvel's What If? Khonshu BAF Wave (2022)

“It’s not risk, it’s hope. And anyone who’s seen a zombie movie knows that that’s the key to survival” Following on from the 2021 release of Zombie Captain America, Hasbro added two more What If? Marvel Zombies to their Marvel Legends line as part of the 2022 Khonshu BAF wave. The first of these was Zombie Iron Man who would be packed in the window-less boxes in use at the time with illustrations on the front, side and reverse of the figure to confirm the contents. Zombie Captain America from the prior year had set the standard for these Zombie figures, having been almost entirely sculpted from scratch. Zombie Iron Man did not need to follow suit to quite the same extent as on-screen Tony’s suit was shown pretty much intact. Therefore in essence all that Hasbro needed to do was the existing Iron Man MCU suit from Infinity War and pop on a Zombie Tony Stark head. The suit therefore uses the same gloss deep red from the movie version with gold and silver painted panels and a white arc reactor. There is a similar application to Tony as we saw on Cap with the midsection of the figure updated so that part of the right-hand armour is missing and in the gap you can see what we assume is the pale blue zombie flesh and some white pieces which might be bone - but anatomically are two low down to be ribs. The armour is washed with a brown to distress it and dirty it up, but it lacks any of the gore and blood we saw with Cap. The Zombie Tony Stark's head is new and like Cap, it features an extended open jaw, framed with the remnants of Tony’s beard. The eyes on Stark are yellow and almost glowing, while the hair framing the face is wild and unkempt. The figure comes with alternative hands and a pair of thruster effects, both carried over from the MCU base figure and these can be used with Zombie Iron Man for firing positions or flight (with an appropriate stand). Articulation comes in at 18 points, with pins at both knee and elbow joints due to the age of the donor body. This original Iron Man was never fully poseable, and the same issues carry forward into the Zombified version and while Cap could shuffle and crawl, the joints on Zombie Tony just don’t allow that sort of positioning leaving him looking a little stiff and awkward. After the heights of Zombie Captain America, the Zombiefied Tony Stark Iron Man figure from Marvel’s What If? is perhaps a bit of a letdown. There is nothing as such wrong with the principle behind the figure, its just lacks the detail and gore of the first Zombie release and doesn’t have the articulation to back up what we’d want from a posed Zombiefied Iron Man on display. • Review: Marvel Legends Zombie Captain America from Marvel's What If? The Watcher BAF Wave (2021)

“I think you've had enough Cap” Following the Marvel’s What If? episode featuring Marvel Zombies, Hasbro released the first Marvel Legends Zombie from the Episode with Captain America. Zombie Cap was part of the first Disney+ wave dedicated to What If? arriving in the window packaging with What If? logo and artwork. While we had assumed this Zombie Cap figure would utilise parts from the existing MCU Captain America releases it turns out that the figure was almost entirely new with perhaps some minor re-use in the midsection and one of the legs. While Zombie Cap is wearing his basic uniform in deep blue with silver star and red & white striped central belt - the whole thing is interspersed with Zombiefied damage from a whole in his chest exposing a rib cage, to holes in both legs and down the right forearm. Skin is a sickly blue finish where exposed with bone detail in white and with a blood-splashed decor around each open wound. Cap’s head is skeletal and with an exaggerated open jaw with an open mouth painted in deep gum red with white teeth. There is a similar white used in the eyes that sit under the usual Captain America mast with the strap hanging down one side where the expanded jaw has presumably snapped it. Cap comes with his shield as an accessory, and this is a re-used part, but given a dirtied look by adding purple ‘gore’ paint spray across the red, silver and blue of the main shield. Cap holds this in either hand by slipping the straps round the back over his hand and wrist. There are 19 points of pinless articulation in all, allowing Zombie Cap to be posed in a variety of undead poses. Particularly favourites of mine include the lopsided look with the marginally shorter unbooted right leg dragging behind the left. Cap can also be posed crawling, with just enough movement in the neck to bring the head up and forward. All in all, Zombie Captain America is very much a triumph in visual design with details that go above and beyond what we usually see on Legends releases particularly the way they’ve opened up parts of the body and even given the left leg a hole all the way through. While he was only on screen for a few minutes, Zombie Cap as a figure is a perfect addition for fans of What If?, or indeed fans of the Marvel Zombies series. • Review: Marvel Legends Strange Supreme from Marvel's What If? The Watcher BAF Wave (2021)

"Sacrifice? That would imply I had something to lose." The Doctor Strange variant, Strange Supreme, was a key part of season 1 of Marvel’s What If? He was therefore also a key part of the first wave of Marvel Legends from the show in 2021 a wave that also featured The Watcher as a build-a-figure. Like many of the What If? Figures from Hasbro, Strange Supreme is built on an MCU Marvel Legends base - particularly the lower half of the Infinity War Doctor Strange including belt and skirt section with sash. While everything else is then new and designed around the What If? Look, using the MCU base lower half does give Strange a real-world set of proportions rather than the slimmer animated style seen on T’Challa Star-Lord. Strange Supreme’s costume mirror his look in the series, with a burgundy robe inlaid with a purple dragon motif and with orange sash around the waist. The arms and legs are purple in colour with gold bracers on the wrists, and a pair of black boots to finish off the outfit.  The head is a new sculpt and captures the gaunt strained look of Strange Supreme with taught skin over his cheekbones and dark shadows around his eyes. While the other What If? Figures have had a simpler animated style to the head decor, Strange utilises more of the facial decor printing we see on MCU figures albeit while still in keeping with the rich colours and contrasts of the animated source material.  Strange also features his cape, and this is a wonderfully sculpted piece with a life of its own in terms of how it flows out from the body rather than hanging flat as seen on the MCU versions. The cape features a purple inner lining with gold trim and swirling patterns, while the outer side is jet black with gold trim. The cape also features the exaggerated collar which sweeps up and frames Strange Supreme’s head. The connection of the cape to the figure is via a single peg and socket and that allows it to almost levitate around the shoulders of the figure rather than relying on the figure shape to hold it in place. The figures only other accessory is an alternative hand with a magic spell effect attached in a green translucent plastic - this again is taken directly from the Infinity War Doctor Strange release. This works with the other two hands which are outstretched in spell posing, giving the overall figure the ability to be posed in a spell-casting position with or without the effect hand. Articulation is just a touch over standard for Strange Supreme, with 21 points of articulation with the extra two sneaked in courtesy of a boot cut swivel. The skirt piece does restrict some of the leg movement, but Strange Supreme is easy to pose and stand with or without the cape - which of course does add extra weight to the rear of the figure. The arms are fully mobile and poseable with the cape’s positioning at a slighly elevated position not hindering some of the upper shoulder movement.  Visually, Strange Supreme is the strongest of the 2021 Watcher BAF wave and straddles the gap between animated and real-world setting well, allowing him to look perfectly at home alongside other animated What if? characters, or as part of a wider MCU display. A visually stunning figure reflective of his role and gravitas in the What If? • Review: Marvel Legends Zombie Hunter Spidey from Marvel's What If? The Watcher BAF Wave (2021)

"If we don't keep smiling when they can't, then we might as well be gone too." Zombie Hunter Spider-Man was a key character during Marvel’s What If? Marvel Zombies story in Season 1 and this resulted in his inclusion in the 2021 Marvel Legends What If? Wave featuring The Wathcher as Build-a-Figure. Zombie Hunter Spider-Man featured the standard packaging with scooped sides and side art based on his Disney+ animated appearance.  Like many of the What If? Marvel Legends releases, Zombie Hunter Spider-Man as a figure is based on the MCU Homecoming Spider-Man suit albeit with an updated upper chest and arms to reflect the varied look of the What If? suit - a nice touch from an accuracy perspective when Hasbro could have re-used the entire body. The blue on the suit is lighter than anything we’ve seen on the MCU suits, while the red is daily standard in colour as is the black trim and Spider-logo. It lacks any web line markings. The suit is finished off with a pair of light metallic bracers around the wrist. While these are individual cast pieces, they are glued in place and can’t be removed. On first opening my figure I thought there was factory defective paintwork with a large patch of red rubbed on the left thigh, and some more on the right side of the chest. It turns out this is weathering of sorts to reflect the situation Peter finds himself in during the Zombie apocalypse. The execution leaves a little bit to be desired and it needed a more even weathering spread instead of the limited patches on an otherwise bright clean suit, The figure features two heads with a masked Spider-Man head using the same red as per the suit with white eyes, edged in black. The unmasked head is a likeness based on the What If? Peter Parker and it's done in an animated/comic book style rather than using a Tom Holland likeness. Spidy also comes with two sets of hands allowing you to alternate between clenched fists and web-slinging hands.  The final accessory is Doctor Strange’s Cloak  of Levitation, a key part of Zombie Hunter Spider-Man’s outfit during the Zombie Apocalypse. Surprisingly, this seems to be a new piece and not recycled from any of the earlier Doctor Strange figures. Is cast in red with pattered panels and a pair of gold painted clasps at the neck. There is no peg or socket, the cape is simply shaped to sit over Spider-Man’s shoulders and hold in place. Despite using the MCU body, the reworked torso has seen the usual Spider-Man articulation levels reduced on this Zombie Hunter variant with 19 points in total and the butterfly shoulders lost in their entirety. This does mean we lose some of the arm motion, but otherwise, Zombie Hunter Spider-Man is reasonably extensive in movement and posing options with or without the cape. Interestingly the figure of Zombie Hunter Spider-Man is a close colour match to the very new suit we see Peter Parker use at the very end of No Way Home which means this version could be a stand-in for now for that suit with the lighter blue finish particularly as the sculpt and proportions are that of a Tom Holland Spider-Man anyway, In terms of replicating his look from What If?, the new release does a good job with the added detail of bringing in new parts as needed to match the Disney+ animated look rather than plump for a full MCU repaint. I do find the attempt at weathering to be clumsy and could have done without it. Articulation is lessened by the lack of butterfly shoulders, but the figure is fun to pose and display with various options to choose from with two heads, two sets of hands, and the choice of the cape. • Review: Marvel Legends 'Heist' Nebula from Marvel's What If? The Watcher BAF Wave (2021)

“Am gonna knock on their front door like a lady” ‘Heist’ Nebula, as seen in the first Season of Marvel’s What If? was a Marvel Legends release in 2021 as part of the full What If? inspired wave that also featured a build-a-figure of The Watcher. Nebula is packed in the scooped-sided Marvel Legends window box featuring the What If? Logo and side art of ‘Heist’ Nebula from the season 1 episodes in which she featured. Hasbro’s approach to What If? In terms of figures has been a mixed one with the use of MCU figures and bodies where available and therefore featuring real-world proportions and style. Ant then there are new figures sculpted in an animated style creating a variance within the collection itself. Nebula is in the latter category and uses the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Nebula figure as a base. The costume is now a brighter purple and with less detailing, with black boots and a new softer plastic belt and holster. The arms are new and cast in the blue Nebula skin tone. The head, also a new sculpt is in the more animated style with a blue flesh tone as a base and more simplistic cartoon features for Nebula’s facial features. She then features her blond shoulder-length hair shaped around her face and down over her shoulders. This lacks any further paint detail other than the base colour. The hair strategically covers Nebula’s left eye, the only part in the show that still featured a cybernetic implant - it might have been nice to bring that detail out on the figure. For those who might want a hybrid look I can confirm that the MCU Nebula head does fit directly onto the body with the skin tone a good match. This head is not included in this release. Nebula features a single blaster accessory, cast in black and with limited detail and zero paint work. This fits in the provided holster and in either hand with alternative right and left options with a trigger finger included in the set. The alternative hands feature a clenched left fist and a right hand with outstretched fingers - both of which are potentially re-uses from other Legends female figures. Nebula has 17 points of articulation, with the legs inclusive of pinned joints due to the use of the older body. The new arms are pinless and the torso retains both the waist swivel and torso ball joint providing Nebula with varied levels of posing options. Despite the wedged heel, the articulation allows her to stand suitably securely either in a neutral or dynamic stance.  Nebula is a faithful recreation of her What If? look, but won’t be to everyones liking in terms of presenting her without her cybernetic implants. This aside, the accessories and articulation are on par with similar releases and she is fun to pose and display alongside the other Multiversal characters from What If? even if there is a variation in styling when they are assembled. • Review: Marvel Legends T'Challa Star-Lord from Marvel's What If? The Watcher BAF Wave (2021)

"Star-Lord T'Challa, leader of the Ravagers and lost Prince of Wakanda." Following on from Season 1 of Marvel’s What If? Hasbro released a full wave of What If? Marvel Legends figures in 2021 complete with a build-a-figure of The Watcher. While some figures in the wave utilised existing MCU Marvel Legends sculpts, others like the T’Challa Star-Lord were sculpted from scratch and in the animated style of the What If? episodes. The proportions of T’Challa are very much in the animated style in hand, with a slimmer build and over-exaggerated and elongated arms and legs. He is wearing his Season 1 Star-Lord get-up with a grey shirt and trousers, a purple jacket with gold trim, and brown boots with grey panels.  He features two head options, allowing you to display him with his helmet on or off. The helmeted head features the same design as the MCU Star-Lord but slimmer and with purple lenses on the eyes across a gold panel and a darker grey mask. The unmasked head features a likeness to the animated Chadwick Boseman seen in What If?  Star-Lord comes with his pair of Quad Blasters and these are taken directly from one of the MCU releases, repainted with the same purple and gold trim seen on the helmet and the jacket. They fit into either of T’Challa’s hands, with both inclusive of a trigger finger that locks into place. Unlike his MCU counterparts, there is no holster option on T’Challa Star-Lords belt or hips.  Articulation is pinless and there are 19 points in total to work with. The slimmer build and lack of any armour or robes makes T’Challa very poseable including having an ability to kneel and sit alongside a number of more dynamic options with or without his blasters. The figure does suffer from ankle rockers that do not pivot far enough forward, leaving T'Challa difficult to stand upright and with a tendency to fall backward unless you bend the knees further forward into a very unnatural-looking stance if viewed side on. As a Marvel Legends release from an animated series, there are now significant issues with T’Challa other than the animated look will not suit all collectors. This issue is compounded by Hasbro not applying a set rule for their What If? figures. Rather than seat them all in the animated style like the Spider-Verse releases, the What If? collection varies between true animated style figures such as T’Challa and a selection of others that started out as MCU releases - and therefore have a real-world grounding. Side-by-side the different types do look slightly off. Considering the volume of MCU releases, I personally would have perhaps preferred a repainted MCU Star-Lord body with T’Challa head - but I do applaud Hasbro for skipping this option and developing a brand new figure.
