The Star Wars Black Series Holiday figures are a variety of Black Series releases, reimagined into a Holiday theme - usually Christmas, but we have seen some Halloween figures over the years. Our festive pick this year for review is the 2022 Holiday Scout Trooper, released as part of the 2nd full wave of Holiday figures and exclusive to Walmart in the US. The Christmas-themed figures are packed into a light-coloured giftwrap inspired box with red trim and snowflake detailing using the helmet design of the Scout Trooper figure. The Holiday Scout Trooper is a repaint of the existing Black Series Imperial Scout Trooper with a focus on the festive combination of red and green. The undersuit is coloured in a deeper red, while bright red is used on the knee and groin panels and green on the shoulder, elbow and wrist panels. The boots also feature green but with white stripes. The body is concluded with a printed ‘Christmas Jumper’ inspired design on the chest which features Grogu. The Scout Trooper helmet is cast in red, with a green visor and with some component details picked out on the mouthpiece and at either side of the cowled visor.  A holster on the right shin carries the Scout Trooper hold-out blaster. These holiday edition accessories are often painted up like Hasbro Nerf weapons with the hold-out blaster having a white body with an orange barrel and grey grip. It fits into the Scout Trooper’s right hand when not holstered, with the right hand having the top two fingers split from the bottom two to sit into the grip of the blaster.  The Holiday Troopers nearly always feature a Christmas-themed creature of sorts, and for the Scout Trooper, the Hasbro team has taken the saddle bag with Grogu from the 2019 Imperial Remnant Scout Trooper and given it a festive makeover. The bag is now bright red, with white trim and a black strap. It sits over either shoulder of the Trooper, with the flap able to be opened to reveal Grogu’s head within. Grogu is not given any Xmas decor and is the same green-painted head as seen on the main releases. The flap can be closed if you want to hide Grogu away, with twin straps slotting into sockets on the main bag and holding the piece closed.  The Scout Trooper has 20 points of articulation, including double joints on the knees and elbows. Designed originally to ride a Speeder Bike, there are plenty of posing options available with the joints tight and secure and able to hold in a number of posing options with or without the two accessories.  The Holiday Edition figures are certainly not everyone’s cup of tea, but do follow a theme that pre-dates the Black Series with Hasbro Holiday Editions from across the years. I find them a bit of fun for the Festive period and am trying to pick up a new one each Christmas to expand my display, sitting alongside some of our Chrimbo decorations for a broader display. "The 12th Cyber Legion monitors this entire quadrant” “I need to find the Doctor, and I need to show him this” “You are Complete” The second batch of B&M Exclusive Doctor Who Sets from Character Toys was released in December 2024 and featured just two sets - a new addition to the History of the Daleks collection, and this 3-pack titled Friend & Foes of the Doctor.  The set arrives in the packaging established in 2023 for the Invasion of Time set and uses a white and blue outer box with a TARDIS illustration in the corner. The set name is confirmed in the bottom right corner and above this a foil ‘Limited Edition’ sticker. The contents are then listed a bit further up in a diamond call-out box. The set is badged as from the 10th Doctor era, but only actually contains one figure from the Tennant run with the Clockwork Man from The Girl in the Fireplace. The other figures, as detailed on the rear of the box, are taken from Matt Smith’s 11th Doctor run with River Song from The Pandorica Opens, and the Cyberman from A Good Man Goes to War. The rear of the box also expands on the variations these figures represent and their place in each of their appropriate episodes. These ‘collector’ boxes have sadly now moved to a blister card within the main box that means they cannot be repackaged once opened with the blister having to be pulled away from the backing card in order to access the figures. The set also has two variants with two different Cyberman split 50:50 across the production run, which does mean double-buying for those completists who want all the variants.  We start with the Cyberman which is built using the 2006 figure. These were envisaged to be the original Mondasian Cybermen during the events of A Good Man Goes to War, so the figure has had the Cybus Industries logo removed from the central chest panel and a circular decal applied instead. The original figure has always been well-proportioned and detailed, with this 2024 model enhanced with what looks to be a brighter silver finish and darker two-tone greys in the connective joints.  The Cyberman is accurate to the episode, but the variant Cyberleader with painted black handlebars is more of a ‘what if’ scenario. In the show, the actual Cyberleader (or Controller) had the transparent dome and while I can understand why there are calls for this to have been used instead, that would have made the production run more complicated vs simply painting the same head mold slightly differently on half of the sets.  The Cyberman comes with the ‘Reaper’ gun first seen on the Mickey Smith release in 2007. Like the Cyberman, the gun too has a decor update with a black finish and gunmetal dry brushed detailing. The weapon has been packed with a Cyberman in a B&M set in 2016 with a gripping hand that allowed the weapon to be held in the left hand. In this set, they have made the decision to go with the Cybercontroller hands which are more open and this makes the gun difficult to grip in either hand. The articulation is 14 points in total, and while the hands make it look like a two-handed pose should be possible, the limited arm movement blocks this. All in all the Cyberman is limited to wooden posing in neutral stances or with some level of movement in the arms to point the gun assuming it doesn’t simply fall out of the grip. Our second figure is a new version of River Song. This is based on the scenes at the start of The Pandorica Opens where River steals the TARDIS painting by Van Gogh from Liz 10. To replicate this for the set, the original Pandorica Opens River Song - in boots, a fur-lined coat - has been taken and cast entirely in black. While the trousers and boots are pretty accurate to those opening scenes, the coat really should have been a collared shirt and not a bulky jacket. Over the outfit is a softer plastic belt, also in black with silver painted details, with a holster then fixed to River’s right thigh.  The head sculpt is new and is a good likeness to Alex Kingston and in keeping with the established aesthetics of this long-running Doctor Who line. This new River head sculpt features a ponytail with the hair reworked and painted a sandy finish. The head is cast in a flesh tone, which is not fully matched with the painted flesh on the neck which does stand out.  River has 16 points of articulation including the inclusion of a boot cut swivel instead of the thigh, and a duel joined shoulder which means the arms can move away from the body as well as rotating in full. This makes her the most articulate figure in the set. She also comes with a gun in a gunmetal finish that can sit in her holster or in her right hand. Neither fit is snug and the gun falls out of the holster far too easily. The hand grip is a little more secure, but the trigger finger won't engage to hold the weapon securely.  Our final figure is a new variant of the Clockwork Man. To date, we’ve had blue, black, and purple versions of this figure which dates back as far as 2007. As detailed on the back of the box, there were two versions of the Gold Clockwork man scene in The Girl in the Fireplace, and therefore if B&M and Character wanted to put a variation into the set the more desirable variant might have been a recoloured Clockwork Man with varied hair piece or tweaks to the outfit. What we do get is a gold-clad Clockwork Driod with plenty of paint applications from the golden trim of the tailed coat to the buttons on the waistcoat or the buckles on the shows. The face is similarly detailed with the crooked red smile and black eyes contrasted by the pale white finish of the face and golden trim around the eyes. The hair piece is a grey finish and textured, enhanced further with a lighter grey wash. Like all prior Droids, the head is removable to expose the clockwork head underneath. This is a clear plastic dome inside of which we can see some golden clockwork workings. The Droid also comes with the blade weapon that slots into a socket in the sleeve of the right arm. The blade piece is silver with further gold components on the outer side.  The Clockwork Droid features a very low articulation count of just 11 in total. The legs don’t have much movement beyond a neutral stance, while the arms can only extend outward with a 90-degree elbow bend. The head is fixed so doesn’t rotate with or without the mask in place, and the only other movement is a waist joint which will rotate under the cut of the waistcoat.  The 2024 Friend & Foes of the Doctor set feels a bit of a mismatch throughout. It is badged as a 10th Doctor Era release, yet 2/3rds of the set are actually from the 11th Doctor. The Cyberman is an impressive decor update on prior releases, but the Cyberleader variant is not quite accurate and is unlikely to temp all but the most completist of collectors to double-dip on the set. The River Song is visually OK and has a good level of articulation, but also lacks screen accuracy. McFarlane have confirmed a variant of their Dick Grayson Nightwing is heading to Gamestop in the US. The Gold Label 'Frostbite' Edition has Nightwing cast in a blue frozen effect finish complete with night-sticks, alternative hands, display base, art card, and art-card display. "You're telling me that the king of a Third World country runs around in a bulletproof cat suit?" Everett Ross was released as a Marvel Legends figure in 2018 as part of an exclusive 2-Pack with Killmonger. The set was relatively scarce in the UK in particular, leading to the figure’s price climbing on the secondary market. In 2022 a re-release was confirmed as part of the Wakanda Forever wave of figures that also featured an Attuma build-a-figure. While Ross had a role to play in Wakanda Forever, his figure remained the only one badged for the original Black Panther movie and also featured the Legacy badge indicating it was a re-release rather than a new version of the character.  The wave was one of a handful released in 2022 during the ‘plastic-free’ packaging phase so has no window to show off the figure, only photos and illustrations around the box including a confirmation of contents on the rear. The BAF checklist moved to the left spine, while the right carried the usual character artwork. Ross himself is held in check inside the box in a cardboard inner tray and is wrapped in waxy paper. The Everett Ross figure is the exact same mold as the 2018 release from the Killmonger 2-Pack. Ross uses the established suited body with the jacket and trousers cast in a dark blue. The shirted torso is a lighter pale blue and the tie is a royal blue to finish the configured outfit. This blue look is actually seen in Wakanda Forever with the grey version on the older figure the Black Panther look - which does make the packaging choice and branding as a Black Panther Legacy release somewhat odd.  vs 2018 release (right) The head sculpt is the same as the original which had a good likeness to Martin Freeman, but this newer version is much improved with a more accurate hair colour in particular and enhanced facial printing. It also loses the slight 5-o-clock shadow the first release was sporting which is another welcome improvement. Ross comes with a single handgun as an accessory. This is a simple black plastic piece and limited in its detail. It is a different piece to the one packed with 2018 Agent Ross and that is a shame as the original gun was screen-accurate while the new one has some strange proportions including a flared barrel. The gun fits into the right hand of Ross where a trigger finger slots into place. There is no holstering option. Articulation is getting dated now on these suited bodies and while there are 19 in total both the elbows and knees are pinned and the ankle rockers remain problematic with limited movement and a clash with the hem of the trousers which stops them from sitting completely flat to the floor without some manipulation in the rotation of the leg or a touch of heat treatment to force them further forward. While the pins do impact the aesthetics, the rest of the articulation works well enough to give Agent Ross a reasonably wide level of display options with or without his gun including a few very ‘James Bond’ poses. Packaging aside, this is pretty much a Wakanda Forever release for Agent Everett Ross. It improves marginally on the original by way of the head sculpt but changes little else, and the aging suited body continues to cause problems with stability. The handgun change is also an odd choice, but 2021/2022 saw a few unusual weapon choices which may have been driven by external factors that prevented the use of screen-accurate pieces. All in all, the figure does what it needs to do and enhances a wider movie collection without being a stand-out piece. Mezco's 5Points Beetlejuice Collector Set will feature two 3.75-inch versions of Beetlejuice, one in his iconic striped suit, and the other in his wedding tuxedo. The striped suit will also come with a Beetlejuice gravestone, while the Tuxedo features a second shrunken head option. “I never yielded! And as you can see, I am not dead!” The original Marvel Legends release of Black Panther in Vibranium Charged suit was a 2019  release under the Avengers: Infinity Way logo, and part of the M’Baku BAF wave. The figure was re-released in 2022 as part of the Marvel Legends Black Panther Legacy wave - a set of re-releases that brought key figures back onto store shelves with some featuring tweaks and updated decor. The wave did not include a Build-a-Figure. It featured the standard packaging design but now badged this Black Panther figure under the original Black Panther movie logo. The box did differentiate from the mainline releases by carrying a Legacy Collection logo on the top left.  The Vibranium Charged suit is created on the standard Black Panther movie figure cast in black and featuring a textured suit design. The various joints in the suit are painted in a metallic almost pearlescent purple to replicate the charged energy the suit is holding. The original 2019 release used a very bright purple, while this 2022 update tones this back a little to a more subdued colouring against the black of the main suit. Additional paintwork is added in silver around the necklace, the claws on the hands, and around the shins and feet.  The masked head follows the same principle in decor as the body coming cast in black with charged Vibranium purple added in the gaps in the helmet design, alongside silver lines, including into the ears of the helmet and in the eyes. Again this purple is a more subdued colour than the original. There is also a variation in the eyes which were white on the first release which is arguably the more accurate colour when you see the charged suit onscreen. vs 2019 release (right) The release also comes with an unmasked head with an excellent likeness to the late great Chadwick Boseman, particularly from a slightly side-on angle. The same head was used on the original release, but the 2022 version does enhance the decor slightly with crisper features and a more natural skin tone and finish. The suit features two pairs of hands so the figure can be displayed with either clawed hands or clenched fists. While the original release carried the Vibranimum charged purple onto he clawed hands, the new version leaves them a plain black which is disappointing - the silver claws do remain in place. Each hand swaps in and out easily. The Black Panther body has a full 21 points of articulation which allows a full range of movement including the ability to kneel and crouch. The arms have a wider field than usual thanks to butterfly shoulders with double-jointed elbows allowing them to fold back on themselves - this does give the figure the ability to be posed doing the Wakanda cross-armed salute. Once posed, the figure is stable and secure. The new release is also nearly entirely devoid of any joint wobble - an issue the first figure had in several key areas. The MCU Marvel Legends line is not short on Black Panther options over the years, and this 2022 release adds to this with some small improvements on its predecessor. The charged Vibranium look won’t be for everyone, but this release does dial back the intensity of that purple colour. The headsculpt is improved marginally by slightly more advanced face print tech and in particular the tones chosen for the skin and facial features. And the articulation while the same combination as the older release is tightened up and feels more robust. The figure will work in a Black Panther, Infinity War or Endgame setting so for a larger MCU display there remains room for this alongside other versions of the character. Diamond Select's House of the Dragon Series 3 figures are confirmed and will feature an updated Daemon Targaryen in his Royal Armour as previewed at NYCC 2024. Daemon will also feature a dragon's egg and incubation brazier. The second figure in the series is Ser Harrold Westerling in Kingsguard armour. Ser Harrold will have both helmeted and unhelmeted heads and looks to include his sword. The Kingsuard body of Ser Harrold is also getting an immediate re-use with a Previews Exclusive release of Ser Criston Cole. Ser Criston also comes with helmeted and unhelmeted head. Series 9 of Diamond Select's Lord of the Rings series will feature Bilbo Baggins (as played by Ian Holm) from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It will also branch out into The Hobbit with Tauriel. Bilbo will be poseable in two distinct looks with and without his coat with a pair of alternative arms provided. Tauriel is listed as including alternative hands and a selection of weapons - although these are not specifically shown in the promo images.
