"We'll handle this" The three main participants from the Duel of the Fates in Star Wars The Phantom Menace have all had Star Wars Black series previously, with Darth Maul’s original figure dating back to the start of the line in 2013. In 2024 it was announced that a new exclusive 3-Pack would be released in the Autumn that brought Qui-Gon Jinn, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Darth Maul together with small enhancements to each figure vs their prior releases. The set is a Gamestop exclusive in the US, while in the UK and other territories, it is available through Fan Channel retailers with the UK stocks shipping in early November 2024. The design and production of the packaging pre-dates the recent change to the Hasbro Collector Series boxes and so it still features the slanted side. The box remains the same height and depth as standard packaging but is significantly extended to accommodate the trio within. It uses the accent colour assigned to The Phantom Menace, with the yellow utilised to call out the contents and on the side art. The box is not part of the numbered series so the side art is a standalone montage of all three characters and does not connect to any of the other Phantom Menace sets - which is a sensible choice considering the depth of shelf you would need to display this with its artwork presented forward. The rear of the box has a repeat of the character art and the briefest of setup for the epic duel without referencing the Duel of the Fates directly anywhere on the packaging. The inner card back for the figures remains the plain grey seen with the initial Galaxy Collection releases - it is here perhaps the fact this set is not in the new packaging is most keenly missed as a deep yellow backdrop inclusive of the Theed Generators or Hanger would have looked lovely for boxed collectors. Working from left to right, we start with Qui-Gon Jinn. He has been released twice before with the first in 2017  and then a re-release on retro cardback in 2021  which then updated the face with facial printing technology. This 2024 release is the exact same base figure with his sculpted Jedi tunic in a sandy finish over a pair of darker brown trousers and deep brown boots. Qui-Gon’s key decor is around his belt which is part of the lower skirt piece and painted in brown tones with silver and gold details around the buckle, fastenings, and component parts. vs 2021 Carded Qui-Gon Jinn (right) The head sculpt is, for me, a further improvement on the 2021 version with a fantastic likeness to Liam Neeson and with that stern look of Qui-Gon ahead of him going into battle. The hair piece is sculpted on the head and painted, followed by a secondary piece that flows down over each side of Qui-Gon’s shoulders.  The original Qui-Gon was not released with his outer Jedi Robes, a look that he sports for much of the Phantom Menace - although ironically is discarded for his battle with Darth Maul. This new set includes soft goods robes for all three figures, so we do finally get a full outfit for Qui-Gon. The Jedi robes are improving slowly with each release and the are some learnings here from The Acolyte with tailored stitched folds around the hood to allow it to sit much more naturally over Qui-Gon’s head or folded down. The wider robes remain a touch too flat and lacking the heft and folds of the actual robes, but they are a reasonable compromise at this scale.  Qui-Gon features his lightsaber with the hilt able to clip into a socket on his belt for a slung position. The usual clip-in blade is included in translucent green with a secure and straight fit with no obvious warping or immediate risk of snapped connectors. The saber can be held in either or both hands with the 16 points of articulation supporting some rudimentary poses. I say rudimentary as the base figure is a few years old now and is lacking on a few of the more modern additions particularly the butterfly shoulders which are always beneficial on characters with swords or lightsabers. The neck is also fixed with a marginally visible joint under Qui-Gon’s beard, and there is not a lot of movement in the waist. We do get quite an extensive range of leg articulation - although the knees feature visible pins at the sides - and the skirt piece of the robes is split to allow wider fighting stances.  The Darth Maul figure in the set is a brand new piece developed for 2024 - replacing the dated 2013  piece - and with three different releases which may cause some saturation. The figure was seen as part of the SDCC 2024 Sith Speeder Exclusive  set with that version including a soft goods inner skirt - while this Duel of the Fates version (and the upcoming single release) has the skirt in molded plastic. Maul’s robes are all black plastic with sculpted folds and creases with some minor differentiation in shade at the boots and gloves - although the difference is minimal.  vs 2024 SDCC Darth Maul (right) The head sculpt appears to be the same across all three of the 2024 releases, with a strong likeness to Ray Park in full makeup and with the Sith yellow eyes, and red and black markings crisper and more defined - most likely through a printing application. The head is finished with his ring of horns in a bone-white colour. Maul’s outer robes are soft goods, but unlike those of the Jedi, the Sith robes feature a ribbed pleated design which is there on the costume, but not immediately obvious on screen. It therefore doesn’t quite look right at the 6-inch scale where the pleats are more pronounced. The robes feature a tailored hood that will come up and over Maul’s head naturally enough. The sleeves are cut and use longer lengths of hanging material from the elbow as also seen on the costume. Darth Maul features his duel-bladed saber with a two-part hilt that connects together and two inserted translucent red blades. Maul’s hilt can be slung on a socket on his belt too - but it's a trickier fit than Qui-Gon due to the shape of Maul’s robes and the length of the saber when connected fully. The accessory allows Maul to be posed with the full hilt with one or two blades - or with split sabers.  As this is a newer format figure, Maul’s articulation is improved to 23 points of articulation all of which are pinless. He has a very expansive range of arm movement thanks to some broad butterfly articulation in the shoulder alongside the usual elbow and wrist joints. The waist has a reasonable amount of movement, while the dual joint neck allows you to pose Maul mimicking some of his onscreen mannerisms such as a cock of the head or a snarling look down his nose. While we do lose the soft goods skirt on this version, the legs remain fairly unrestricted with the skirt being made up of strips of plastic rather than a single piece. The set is concluded with Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi, a figure that dates back to 2019  where he was released as a mainline release and then again as a Star Wars Celebration Exclusive on retro card complete with the only inclusion of his pointing two-finger duel-ready pose - making this one of the harder figures to obtain and one of the few I am missing personally in my collection. This 2024 version is a re-release of that 2019 version with no substantial updates other than some minor improvements in the face tech which present a closer likeness to Ewan McGregor and do correct some colour variations in his hair. But the new figure does include some backward steps too with the Padawan braid oddly shaped to stick out and to the side where as the original did arrive with the braid hanging naturally. This should be fixable with some hot water if it bothers you on display. vs 2019 Obi-Wan Kenobi (right) Obi-Wan’s outfit is similar to Qui-Gon with a lighter cream set of Jedi Robes and trousers, with painted belt and darker brown boots. The finish on the boots is quite rough with obvious paint bleed in some areas where the cream paint added to the brown plastic around the knee to match the upper joints has leached down over the cut of the boot. The belt is neater with a brown tone and silver, gold, and black component parts painted over the top. Like the original Qui-Gon figure, the original Padawan Kenobi was also devoid of his Jedi Robes - an oversight this set corrects. Obi-Wan’s feature the same fabric as Qui-Gon and other Jedi robes, but the tailoring is not quite as impressive leaving Obi-Wan’s robes uncooperative for both hood up and hood down poses and with some bunching around the back of the figure. This is disappointing when you see a well-executed set of almost identical robes in the same set. Obi-Wan is also packed with his lightsaber with a removable blue translucent blade. There is also a holstered option for Obi-Wan on his belt off to one side, and he can hold the saber in either hand or both. The original Obi-Wan Kenobi figure was released at a time when articulation was expanding so he is a bit of a mix of joints with pinned double-jointed knees but with butterfly shoulders. There are 18 points of articulation in total and Kenobi is more expansive in his posing options, and in particular lightsaber positions, than Qui-Gon. That being said it's not perfect or to the standard of Maul’s articulation with key issues at the shoulders where the cut of the robes does hold the butterfly joint back by some way - and at the wrists with the voluminous sleeves clashing with each other for two-handed poses at an extended reach. Many collectors will be hoping to recreate the Duel of the Fates within their displays and I can confirm that some reasonable recreations are possible within the articulation provided on each figure. Maul is definitely the star here with an extremely expansive repertoire of fighting positions with his saber. Qui-Gon is the most restricted but still comes with some positions which range from two-hand ready or defensive to single-handed strikes. His Padawan, Obi-Wan, is someway between the two with a bit more to give in the arm movement thanks to butterfly shoulders but still held in check by the sculpt of the robes.  As a release, this is a much-needed update for two of the three characters with the addition (finally) of Jedi robes for both Qui-Gon Jinn and Padawan Obi-Wan long overdue. For those not desperate to have the Jedi Robes, or for those that prefer to use after-market soft goods robes, then Padawan Obi-Wan is also a single carded Archive release on shelves currently as an alternative choice to this set - and Maul is of course the same as the upcoming single release, and similar to the SDCC Sith Speeder figure if you already own that release. I do suspect Qui-Gon will see a re-relase as well next year, potentially the Mos Espa market version with the poncho which will fit in nicely with the announced Sebubla (speculation only). If you do plump for this exclusive 3-Pack then it is good to see the price tag is below that of three single figures, and availability outside of the US has been strong through online Fan Channel retailers. All three figures look great with definite improvements made since the original releases of Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan on facial print technology. The soft goods robes do the job, although Qui-Gon’s robes seem to be better tailored than Obi-Wan’s. And the accessories are as you would expect for two Jedi’s and a Sith. There is an argument that both Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon would benefit from a body update and overhauled articulation - this has worked really well for Maul, although his starting position from the very first wave of 2013 Black Series releases was definitely the priority. “Over a lifetime, there are only four or five moments that really matter.” The Marvel Legends offerings for the Fox X-Men universe movies had been limited up until the Disney acquisition in 2017. That led to a 2020 set of releases featuring key figures from the X-Men and Deadpool movies including the Merc with the Mouth, Cable, Domino, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. We’ve had to wait a further 4 years to add to that Deadpool / Deadpool 2 lineup with the October 2024 release of Colossus - the latest Deadpool Legacy figure to join the line. Colossus arrives in the packaging established for Deadpool Legacy releases with the previous Deadpool and Wolverine figures. For Colossus, this squared-off box is the same height as the other single figures but is wider and deeper to accommodate his added bulk. The same typeface and logo are used on the front and sides. Both side panels feature the same image of Colossus, with a small version to the bottom of the left side, while the image covers the majority of the right-hand segment We do get a design change on the rear of the box with a move away from the movie posters we had seen. The rear now comes with an image of Colossus from Deadpool along with the briefest of background text and a checklist of other releases all taken from the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine wave. These are shown as illustrated headshots and not pictures of the actual figure. The card back is a deep red and like the DP and Wolverine releases it features a chipped pot-marked finish, but on Colossus, this also incorporates a backdrop that appears to be the scrapyard from the fight scenes as the end of the original Deadpool movie. Colossus is a brand new figure, standing 20cm (7.75 inches) tall, and wearing the black X-Men uniform we see him wear in both Deadpool and Deadpool 2. The only colouring on the uniform is the red around the X-logo on the chest and the silver of the X-Men belt buckle and stud work on either side. Despite featuring straps on his boots, pockets, and pouches on his trousers, and panels on the rear of the uniform that is shown as being a lighter grey - the decision has been made not to paint or colour these.  The exposed metal skin of the arms, neck, and head is a bright silver with deep-cut ridge lines that appear to be line-washed. The head is a good likeness to the CGI Colossus with white painted eyes and jet-black smooth hair. You get two head options in the set so you can alternate between a neutral look and an angry Colossus which features bared white teeth. The latter may be more useful in the future if we are perhaps to get a Juggernaut from DP2 to display with him (slim chance, but was mentioned by the Hasbro team on Twitter). Also useful for fighting stances are the alternative hands, allowing you a choice between clenched fists and open hands.  There is an immediate feeling of the scale being off with Colossus, and rather than being undersized it feels and looks as though he has been made too large compared to his appearance on screen. If you go off the scenes when Colossus and Deadpool are together in Deadpool and Deadpool 2 - the top of Deadpool’s head comes up to the top of Colossus' shoulder. As figures and placed side-by-side, Deadpool stands as tall as the bicep joint on Colossus, while Negasonic only reaches the torso pivot. While this lacks some accuracy to the first two films, it is more accurate to Deadpool & Wolverine and the scene at Wade's Birthday - and that may have been the driver to creating the additional height (and plastic) when it may not necessarily have been needed. Either way, it is not overly noticeable to the point where Colossus looks ridiculous on display with the rest of the Marvel Legends series. Aside from the alternative head and hands, Colossus has been given a solitary accessory - his X-Men rule book as seen in Deadpool 2. This is scaled to look small in his hands and features a black-bound cover with the yellow X-Men logo. It is sculpted as opened on two pages that include printed legible rules with ‘Rule 01: No Killing, Anyone, Ever’ on one side and ‘Rule 02: Label Everything in the Refrigerator’ on the other. This fits more or less in either of the open hands for display and is a nice nod to his character and relationship with Wade in Deadpool 2 in particular. Articulation for such a big figure is comparable to the standard figures, and he weighs in with 23 points of articulation thanks to some extra boot-cut swivels in the legs. Colossus has also been given butterfly shoulders, extending his arm range inward and outward. The neck is also well done with a ball joint that also pivots forward and back, allowing him to look up and down. I did find getting him balanced an initial challenge. Despite his bulk, the ankle ratchets don’t quite sit the feet flat and on my figure in particular the most stable pose is only achieved if you bring the right leg slightly forward of the left as it appears to be a few mm longer.  In summary, Colossus is a big centre piece character for display, standing over any associated Deadpool and X-Men figures and comparable with other larger movie figures such as Thanos, Venom, and the original Hulk figure (the newer Smart Hulk is however bigger). Considering the size, articulation is pretty good although getting him stood securely may pose a bit of a niggle at first. With Colossus now alongside Deadpool and Negasonic in the line - we can only hope for further characters to expand the ‘Fox’ X-Men collection ahead of the mutants' full return in the MCU movies. McFarlane have revealed a new DC Multiverse Gold Label 'Black and White Edition' release of Blue Beetle. The collector boxed figure features a selection of alternatiev hands and a grappling gun. You also get a collector card and Blue Beeetle logo stands for both the card and the figure. This is an exclusive available at the McFarlane Store and at Walmart in the US and will ship in December 2024. Blue Beetle: Over the course of a century, three different men from very different backgrounds have taken on the heroic mantle of the Blue Beetle, each making their mark in different ways. The original Beetle was an archaeologist named Dan Garrett, who discovered an ancient Scarab in an old Egyptian tomb that gave him superpowers which he used to fight crime. Revealed by McFarlane as the next figure in their McFarlane DC Collector Edition line is Geo-Force as seen in The Outsiders. The figure comes with three interchangeable face plates, a pair of flame effect pieces, and the usual stand and collector card. Geo-Force is a Target US exclusive and is showing up in stores now. We've added him to our McFarlane Collector Database Second-in-line to the throne of Markovia, Prince Brion Markov volunteered to undergo scientific experimentation to become his nation’s super- guardian Empowered by Doctor Helga Jace—author of the contentious “Superman Theory” of creating metahumans—he attained numerous Earth-based abilities. As Geo-Force he quashed an invasion by usurper Baron Bedlam with the aid of Batman, Katana, and other costumed heroes calling themselves the Outsiders. Brion stayed with them, relocating to America, where he was reunited with his half-sister, Tara Markov. Geo-Force eventually assumed command of the team when Batman left. Ahead of their January 2025 release, and to make the anniversary of the first-ever episode of Sesame Street, NECA has released the packaging details for their upcoming Bert and Ernie figures. The Ultimate packaging features a Volume number, with Ernie number 1 and Bert number 2. It is assumed future figures will expand out the volumes. Bert will have an alternative head and hands. He will come with his paper clip and bottle cap collections, Bernice the pigeon, book, and the letter 'A'. “What was first just a dream has become a frightening reality for those who may oppose us.” The first appearance of the live-action Grand Admiral Thrawn in the Ahsoka series on Disney+ was held back from much of the marketing launch with only fleeting glances of the Grand Admiral from the rear in the trailer. This meant Thrawn was not included in the first waves of Star Wars Black Series figures for Ahsoka, but after a few months of waiting, we can now bring the last Grand Admiral of the Empire to our Black Series collection with the November 2024 release.  Thrawn is part of the Galaxy Collection Wave 19, a mixed wave also including Ahsoka Tano from Peridea, as well as figures from Andor, The Phantom Menace, and The Mandalorian. The wave uses the newer packaging with the blue accent colour for Ahsoka on the text and side artwork. Thrawn is number 12 in the Ahsoka collection which sits him between the Peridea Ahsoka from the same wave, and the Baylan Skoll Mercenary release that arrived a week or so ahead of Thrawn. The rear of the box gives a brief overview of Thrawn while the card back includes a blue-hued background of Thrawn’s Imperial Star Destroyer bridge. Thrawn has of course had a Black Series release in the past thanks to his appearance in Rebels, while the option was there to re-use some parts - the new Grand Admiral Thrawn is an entirely new figure that accurately recreates the build and proportions of actor Lars Mikkelsen. The Grand Admiral uniform is cast in white with sculpted epaulets, collar insignia, code cylinders, and the Grand Admiral rank badge - all of which are then painted neatly and crisply in their respective colours. The belt and lower section of the tunic are a softer plastic with the belt painted in black with broad silver buckle, extending down to a holster on Thrawn’s right hip. The uniform is finished with a pair of high black gloss boots.  The head sculpt is a strong likeness to Mikkelsen in makeup with a deep blue skin tone, deep blue lips, slicked back blue/black hair, and red eyes. The detail appears to be photo-printed considering the detail around the eyes in particular. And the sculpt does a great job in capturing that cold, arrogant look that Mikkelsen portrays in Thrawn in his scenes.  vs Star Wars Rebels Thrawn Release (right) We have a single accessory, a plain blaster in black with a touch of silver detail down the barrel. The weapon fits into Thrawn’s right hand or into the holster, although the fit in the holster is not as snug as we’ve seen on other figures and it can slip out if you aren’t careful. Thrawn has the newer format of body without the thigh swivels and comes in with 15 points of articulation. This is all pinless and sufficient for what we would need the cold and calculating Thrawn to do in terms of his stances and mannerisms. Yes, he can point and shoot his blaster with the leg articulation adding some dynamism to the pose if you want - but in reality, Thrawn is all about that neutral stance, hands behind his back, calculating his next move - and the figure can replicate these perfectly. The Star Wars Black Series Galaxy Collection Wave 19 release of Grand Admiral Thrawn is pretty much everything you need for the character with a look perfectly reflective of his scenes in Ahsoka - including the paunch of the now older Grand Admiral. The uniform is white and crisp, with the painted detail of the insignia, epaulets, and belt all being neat and tidy. The blaster ticks a box of an accessory, although not massively in keeping with Thrawn - and perhaps a command datapad or holo map might have been more reflective. Joining up with Captain Enoch is the beginning of an Imperial Remnant display from The Chimera, and we would hope further Night Troopers and Death Troopers are on the way to further flesh out Thrawn’s forces. McFarlane has announced three new DC Direct Page Puncher releases for a December 2024 release.
