“How many do we need?” In 2021 Hasbro marked the 5th Anniversary of Rogue One with a number of releases in the Black Series line as part of their new Galaxy Collection packaging and connective artwork boxes. Within this were a number of new releases, but also a reworking of five of the original Rogue One figures giving most of them a makeover both in figure decor and in packaging.  The wave was a Fan Channel release. The final figure in the Rogue One Fan Channel wave for 2021 was Baze Malbus whose cyan coloured artwork follows on from fellow Guardian of the Whills Chirrut Imwe in the larger Rogue One montage. The artwork then connects onward to the first new figure of the wave from Rogue One, Bodhi Rook . vs 2017 release (right) Baze Malbus uses the same base as his original 2017 release . He is wearing a green/brown combat suit overlaid with armoured panels in either cream or deep gloss red. The largest of these is a chest piece, featuring a two-tone ‘V’ decal, that encircles his neck and runs down to his midriff where it connects to what is described as a battery regulator in cream with painted silver panels and buttons. The costume concludes with a belt featuring two large pouches, and a pair of simple brown boots. There are more noticeable colour variances on Baze vs his original release with a darker tone to the combat suit and a brighter tone to the red.  The head sculpt was obviously a good likeness to actor Jiang Wen with the newer face printing showing that off on the new release. Baze’s head sculpts also include his long hair which frames his face and sits over his shoulders with the end sections with a painted hair tie or wrap. There is a slightly glossy finish to the face which was something we saw across 2021 and that does detract slightly from the overall look although it does present as a sweaty face which is accurate to the battle scenes on Scarff. Baze comes with his Heavy Repeater Cannon which is cast in grey with black and red markings. It connects directly to an ammunition feed in grey that itself connects to Baze’s backpack. This drum-shaped Coolent Backpack slots into a socket on the rear of the figure and features a similar red colouring to his armour with silver trim and panels and a visible section where we have a series of coiled bronzed wires. There is also an exhaust port that comes out to the side and upward. Baze’s black cloak is incorporated into the backpack to hang to the left-hand side.  There is also a taser accessory secreted away on the rear of Baze's belt. This can be removed and wielded as a weapon. Baze Malbus features 16 points of articulation with the main use coming from the arms which have to grip the Heavy Repeater Cannon with both a right-hand trigger grip, and for most poses a left-hand support grip. These arm positions also have to work with the ammo belt so not to dislodge it. While this is feasible, it is quite tight overall and you will find Baze limited to just a short range of two-handed poses with the gun. The legs feature dual-joined knees as a carryover from the older figure which provides a wider range of leg positions - albeit a little held in check by the cape that hangs down as low as Baze’s ankles. Despite the extensive backpack, the front weaponry does balance out the figure and there is suitable strength in the ankle joints for Baze to stand securely on display. Like the other figures in the wave, Baze Malbus is certainly an enhancement on his earlier release by way of the facial print tech application but also thanks to some crisper colouring in the suit. It brings the entirety of the main Rebel force in Rogue One and the attack on Scariff in line with more recent Black Series releases. During the final Hasbro Marvel Legends livestream of 2024, a number of new Legends releases were confirmed. The first X-Men Wave of 2025 will feature seven new releases including Fabian Cortez as previewed a few weeks back. He is joined by new figures of Wolverine, Gambit, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Marrow, and Husk. The BAF will be Nemesis. McFarlane have announced a new sub-line of their DC Multiverse figures. "And I fear nothing. For all is as the Force wills it” In 2021 Hasbro marked the 5th Anniversary of Rogue One with a number of releases in the Black Series line as part of their new Galaxy Collection packaging and connective artwork boxes. Within this were a number of new releases, but also a reworking of five of the original Rogue One figures giving most of them a makeover both in figure decor and in packaging.  The wave was a Fan Channel release. The fourth figure in the Rogue One Fan Channel wave for 2021 was Chirrut Imwe whose cyan coloured artwork connects between K-2SO and his fellow Guardian of the Whills Baze Malbus in the larger Rogue One montage. Chirrut, like the rest of the wave, is an update on his original 2017 figure . He comes in his black outfit overlaid with soft goods lower skirt in black and red. These soft goods have been shortened from the original release, a small change but one that helps Chirrut look more accurate with his on-screen costume length and for some reason makes him look a bit more ‘ready for action’. The costume is concluded with a cream strap that connects to some components on the front around the waist, and too a black cape in soft plastic around the rear. The device on his belt, and a second on his left wrist and hand, contain the majority of the detailed paintwork with red, grey and silver painted components.  vs 2017 version (right) The head is the same sculpt as in 2017 but with the facial printing technology now used to create a much stronger likeness to actor Donnie Yen. The likeness is not the same level of improvement seen on Jyn Eros and is possibly more down to the shape of the original sculpted head which looks a bit off in terms of Yen’s overall facial proportions. There is a much more accurate finish to the eyes on this newer figure reflecting the character's visual impairment.  Chirrut features two different weapons, starting with his Lightbow which is a brown colour with gold detail and also features articulation allowing the arms to be folded in or out and the front barrel rotated by 90 degrees for horizontal or vertical firing positions. The Lightbow is intended to sit in the right hand of Chirrut with the flexible trigger finger sitting in the grip. The further grip towards the bow end can be held with the left hand. In Rogue One, Chirrut carries this weapon holstered on his back - but sadly there is no engineered option for this on the figure - although you can get away with tucking it under the softer plastic cape and it will hold in position.  The second piece is Chirrut’s staff, a more simplistic piece sculpted to look like carved wood with a painted silver tip and grip part way down the length. This can be held in either or both hands and used as either a weapon or a walking staff. Articulation is 16 points in total with visible pins at the knees, although these are hidden by the soft goods. The elbows will just about get to a right angle bend which helps in wielding the Lightbow but not in full-on firing poses which would require more range in the elbows and perhaps some butterfly shoulders. The staff is the more expressive weapon with the articulation available with single and two-handed poses open to Chirrut for display. Like the original release, there doesn’t seem to be as much ratcheting on the right ankle joint as there is on the left which does create some minor stability problems in certain poses.  All in all, Chirrut Imwe is another solid enough upgrade with a bit more work done on the robes rather than just adding facial printing to the head sculpt. In the grand scheme he may have benefited from a full reworking, particularly the likeness - but as a relatively minor character this is probably as good as we will get and I am thankful that he was chosen from some of the earliest releases to get the facial printing update. Joining the Star Wars Black Series and as revealed as part of the 'Gift the Galaxy' program is a new 2-pack of Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia from Shadows of the Empire. Luke is in his Imperial Guard armour while Leia is in her Boussh disguise. Both figures include removable helmets and their staff. The 2-pack is a Hasbro Pulse Exclusive with pre-orders live as of the 11th of December 2024. The set will then ship in Spring 2025. Further stocks will then be available at the Disney Store.
