- Review: Marvel Legends M'Baku from Black Panther, Black Panther Legacy Wave
"Witness the might of the Jabari! First-hand!" The impressive figure of M’Baku was originally a build-a-figure and part of the second full Marvel Legends wave from Black Panther in 2019. He would finally be released as a single figure in 2022 as part of the Black Panther Legacy Collection, although he was an exclusive release sold via Target in the US and through the Fan Channel retailers here in the UK. The Legacy Collection figures include a selection of Black Panther characters repacked and ‘updated’ from their original releases. The wave came in the same Legends packaging but without a Build-a-Figure and with a new Legacy Collection logo on the top left of the hanging tab. M’Baku is identical in sculpt to the original 2019 BAF release, with a complex outfit that starts with some glossy black and brown chest armour down to a two-layer softer plastic skirt piece. These skirt pieces feature some extensive paint apps to create the multi-strand look of the outer skirt, and the white snowy weathering of the inner piece. The arms are exposed skin-toned but with carved wood effect shoulder pauldrons, grey bicep wraps, and fur gauntlets. The legs incorporate large skin guards in a carved wood effect finish and fur-topped shoes. Fur is also used on a cape that sits on M’Baku’s shoulders and down over his back. All the fur pieces use a similar paint technique with a bone white colour over which a darker wash is added to create depth and texture. This is significantly improved compared to the initial figure as is the skirt decor. The chest armour is also glossier and the browns of the carved armour are brighter. vs 2019 BAF (right) The head sculpt on the 2019 release was already a good likeness to Winston Duke, and the 2022 version re-uses this in full. The older head had a matt skin tone, while the new version has a glossier finish. I will come down to personal preference as to which is most accurate as there is little else to separate them. M’Baku has a solitary accessory, his knobkerrie staff/club. which is a smooth cast piece with a large circular end and a tapered shaft down to a point at the far end. It lacks any sculpted detail and decor but is pretty much as we see it on screen as it only gains additional fur and trophies on screen in Wakanda Forever. The knobkerrie fits into either hand, with sufficient articulation for two-handed posing. The articulation itself is 18 points in total, with pegged knees and arms the latter of which is visible when the arms are posed in any form of raised position. The arm movement is also held back by the bulk of his armour and his cloak - although the cloak can be removed if needed. There are sufficient posing options, just nothing dynamic. And the same applies to the legs which are almost entirely enclosed by the duel skirt with a little bit of lateral movement to create some wider stances. M’Baku as a figure relies heavily on his bulk and the intricacy of his costume rather than his articulation. With knobkerrie in hand, he creates an impressive figure leading the Wakandans into battle recreating the events of either Black Panther or Infinity War. The 2022 release does improve upon the costume decor if not that of the head, and also puts a BAF into more general circulation for anyone that missed out originally. - Review: Marvel Legends Shuri from Black Panther, Black Panther Legacy Wave
"I invite you to my lab and you just kick things around?" Shuri was initially released in the Marvel Legends series in 2019 as part of the Avengers: Endgame wave for Smart Hulk, albeit badged as a Black Panther release. In 2022 as a taster for the upcoming release of Wakanda Forever, Hasbro re-released a number of the original Black Panther movie figures in a new Legacy wave and included Shuri within this alongside Black Panther, M’Baku, Nakia, and Killmonger. The wave still utilised the standard Legends packaging but did use a new Legacy Collection logo on the top left of the hanging tab. Shuri is the exact same figure as released in 2019 but with some considerable decor updates this time round. The original figure looked quite flat and lacked some of the more vibrant blue colouring that Shuri sports. This time around these blues are more present with the entirety of the main costume having a purple/blue hue overlaid with complex sculpted patterns and panels trimmed with the use of gold and blue paintwork. The arms feature some ringlets part way up the upper arm painted as silver rings and then above them in purple. The costume concludes with a skirt piece overlaid over the figure's waist complete with a silver painted buckle. The older figure left this skirt piece plain, while this revisit adds in a very impressive level of printed decor in light blue. vs 2019 Release (right) The head sculpt and overall skin tone is lightened slightly and is richer than the first release with the facial sculpt a good likeness to Letitia Wright. The facial paintwork is also brighter and more vivid around the eyes and across the mouth and forehead with the head finished with the hair drawn up into a complex top knot. Shuri features her Vibranium gauntlets, again directly carried forward from the earlier release. These are sculpted to look like a panther's mouth and while the first release just had these in black plastic, the update adds in golden eyes for the panther as well as a blue streak sitting just behind the head. These clip onto the wrists of the figure and hold securely in place allowing for them to pose with the figure. There are some translucent blue effects ‘spitting’ from the mouth of the gauntlets. Again the improvement is in the vibrancy of the colouring with a true eclectic blue colour now in use. These are glued in place so there is no immediate choice to not use them on display. vs 2019 Release (right) Shuri does only get 16 points of articulation, with the lower legs still featuring pinned knees although these are out of sight thanks to the skirt piece. The skirt does limit lower leg movement, and the way the legs are sculpted does give them a slightly ‘bandy’ look which can be offset by having Shuri into a wider battle-ready stance. The arms do not have the movement to do everything we would expect from Shuri with the elbows in particular both restricted and quite fragile in the way they work. They will bend to 90 degrees but no further so Shuri cannot do the Wakanda Forever salute and the use of the Vibranium Gauntlets is limited to outward firing poses to the side. While the Legacy release of Shuri updates her significantly from a decor perspective, it makes no direct improvements to what is now an outdated suite of joints. The joints we do get limit her display options considerably with or without the gauntlets. Once on display she is much more vibrant than the earlier release and features some complex decor we rarely see on a Legends release - in particular that skirt design which is seriously impressive for something that can only be viewed from behind. - Review: Marvel Legends Erik Killmonger from Black Panther, Black Panther Legacy Wave
"I want your weapons, your secrets, it’s all mine now." Erik Killmonger in the Golden Jaguar suit was first released in the Marvel Legends line in 2018 as part of the first wave of Black Panther movie figures. An unmasked version with some minor variations in decor was released later that same year in a two-pack with Agent Ross. In 2022 Killmonger was released for a third time in the Black Panther Legacy Collection wave. The wave contained rereleased figures only - albeit with some tweaks - and had no Build-a-Figure. It utilised the standard Legends packaging but did use a new Legacy Collection logo on the top left of the hanging tab. vs 2018 release (right) Killmonger is the same base figure as the 2018 releases but this 2022 version does feature some improvements in the applied decor as printing technology has moved forward. The body is cast in a dark grey rather than the black of the first release with a subtle but detailed Jaguar spot pattern overlaid in black. The suit features multiple textures and panels with further paintwork added in gold around the necklace, belt, claws, and feet. The masked head is a big move forward on the older releases with a significantly more pronounced golden Jaguar pattern which is both detailed and crisp and likely printed onto the head. There is also an unmasked Michael B. Jordan head which was first used on the 2-pack release from 2018. The likeness on the original head was always strong and there are minor improvements on the new version thanks to the most recent facial printing technology. The heads swap in and out with ease and both can of course be retrofitted to the older figures if you do want to mix and match - utilising both newer heads from the set by transplanting one onto the older body. Killonger’s suit features a pair of extended clawed hands for use in hand-to-hand combat. There is also a second set of hands included. These feature a gripping pose and work with the two Wakandan tribal weapons that we see Killmonger wield in the events of Black Panther. The first of these is a broad sword with a silver blade and gold grip. The second is a spear tip in silver with light brown wrappings around both the blade and the shaft. The weapons fit into either hand. Articulation is impressive, as it was back in 2018, with Killmonger boasting 21 points of articulation. While the knees are pins, the dark suit hides them well enough and they do contribute to a full range of lower leg motion including kneeling and crouching. The arms also have pins at the elbow joints but also have a full range of motion enhanced by the butterfly shoulders which helps if you do want to have either of the two weapons in an advancing two-handed grip as though to attack. All the joints are secure with ratchets evident on most of the main ones. There is a bit of a wobble at the torso joint but otherwise Killmonger feels really robust. All in all, the 2022 Legacy release of Erik Killmonger in the Golden Jaguar suit is more than a re-release. It updates what was a strong figure with enhanced decor and throws in the unmasked head which had been released in the harder-to-find exclusive 2-Pack in 2018. The additional heads, hands, and weapons provide plenty of options for display and the articulation is wide-ranging allowing for some creativity in display and battle poses alongside Black Panther. - Review: Marvel Legends Peter Parker & Ned Leeds from Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man 60th Anniversary 2-Pack
“Can you summon an army of spiders?” “No, man!” After the various releases of Peter as Spider-Man, as well as figures of MJ, the Vulture, and Iron Man the Hasbro team appeared to have been done with Spider-Man: Homecoming. But in 2022 to mark Spider-Man’s 60th Anniversary, a new Homecoming 2-Pack was announced containing new figures of Peter Parker and Ned Leeds as Midtown High students. The set was a general release and arrived during the short-lived plastic-free packaging era which meant the box had no windows and relied on both images of the figures and illustrations of the character to show off the contents. We start with the first Peter Parker in his civilian gear in the MCU series and this depicts Peter in a pair of tan trousers with a green sweater over a patterned shirt which is just visible at the collar and a piece of the lower seam peeking out from his jumper. Peter’s outfit is complete by a pair of grey trainers with a white painted sole - the sole, and the exposed shirt pieces the only paintwork added onto the base plastic colouring of the cast parts. All of this is reasonably accurate to the outfit we see in Homecoming in the montage at the start as he waits for the call from Tony Stark and that includes the trainers with the only missing element the branding which is off the table for obvious reasons. It is worth noting that the colours may be slightly off as on-screen both the jumper and trousers are more muted, but there may be some exaggeration here for the scale of the figure. Peter includes two head options. The first is a very well-executed Tom Holland neutral head and is the best likeness of Peter Parker to date and would go on to be re-used with some updating of the facial printing on the No Way Home Spider-Man . The second head option is less impressive as Hasbro has tried to get some expression into the face, sculpting Peter as though he is talking or starting to laugh with his mouth sculpted open and the teeth and gum detail painted in. The likeness to Tom Holland is not as clear cut with this version, it just looks off from most angles and doesn’t work too well either with the NEd figure who only comes with a neutral head of his own - so he can’t be displayed sharing the joke. Bother heads are also slightly glossy in the finish, a niggle with a lot of Hasbro releases circa 2021 and 2022. Peter comes with two sets of hands which can be used in combination across the figure. You can choose from a pair of clenched fists and a pair of open hands which work really well with the included backpack. The backpack itself is soft plastic and shaped to fit Peter’s profile. The softer straps go over the arms and shoulders, with the backpack sitting squarely and securely on Peter’s back. It is coloured beige, slightly lighter than his trousers, with painted detail on the zips and the top handle as well as the two straps. The student look is completed by a school book, a fairly non-descript piece in brown with no cover details of any kind. It doesn’t fit in either hand well but can be clutched to Peter’s chest thanks to the arm articulation. The articulation overall is pinless and there are 20 points on paper although the bottom of the neck and the waist have no movement of any note, leaving 18 joints to support posing and movement. All of these work really well and while it is unlikely he will be displayed this way, there are plenty of dynamic (fighting) stances open to Peter. The Ned Leeds figure marks his debut as a Marvel Legends and like Peter, his costume is based on one specifically worn during scenes at Midtown High in Homecoming. This includes a pair of baggy stonewashed jeans, a blue and white striped T-shirt with a beige short-sleeved shirt over the top. The entirety of the shirt and T-shirt are added as a separate full sleeve over a basic torso and this does mean the blue and white of the shirt are painted onto the base beige plastic - while it's fairly neat in terms of the striping, there is paint bleed onto the edges of the shirt. Ned does not come with any additional hands, but he does feature a wristwatch that is removable if you pop off his right hand. He only comes with one Ned Leeds head which doesn’t quite do actor Jacob Batalon justice compared to how nailed-on the Tom Holland neutral head is in the set. Ned's head is off in both skin tone and the overall likeness with the facial sculpt making him look quite a bit younger than he actually is in Homecoming. Like the Holland sculpts, this one also suffers from a slightly glossy tone. There is however a second head for Ned, a nod to the scene where he is trying on the Spider-Man mask. The two heads swap out easily enough, and the alternative head is still given the same level of decor and sculpting as any Spidey head sculpt with sculpted - but unpainted - weblines, as well as white eyes, edged in black. Ned also comes with his student backpack, a camouflage pack with black zips and trim. It has plain black softer plastic straps that fit around Ned’s shoulders and it too is shaped to sit on the figure naturally. Ned features 17 points of articulation with the standard leg joints alongside a limited motion waist joint under the shirt, and a duel jointed neck with most of the movement at the top and minimal motion at the base. The arms are more restricted than usual with the elbows not even reaching the 90-degree mark and the shoulders being quite stiff and awkward to move and pose. There isn’t much we expect Ned to be doing, but it would have been nice for the arms to move sufficiently to pose him as though putting on or taking off the Spidey mask The Spider-Man 60th Anniversary 2-Pack of Peter Parker and Ned Leeds is a set that has had an interesting journey at retail. It was highly sought after at first due to limited stocks, then a large volume was dumped here in the UK via Game with prices dropping way past the £50 RRP to circa £20. The set is still available at the time of writing, although prices have stabilised. What you get in the set are two reasonably well-executed figures based on on-screen costumes and with appropriate accessories for each. Peter is the better of the two and also features more variations in hand and head options. Ned has less articulation and no additional hand options, but the alternative Spider-Man head is quite fun. It is interesting that the way Ned has been designed indicated more variations of him may be in the works - probably No Way Home as a minimum - but the set (at the time of writing) is the only one that will give you a Ned Leeds for your Spider-Man display. - Review: Marvel Legends Baron Zemo from The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, Disney+ Wingsuit BAF Wave
“The desire to become a superhuman cannot be separated from supremacist ideals.” The MCU Baron Zemo was released into the Marvel Legends line in 2021, part of the first-ever Disney+ themed wave alongside other characters from The Falcon & The Winter Soldier as well as from WandaVision and Loki. Zemo was packed in the usual Marvel Legends packaging featuring the new Falcon & Winter Soldier logo with artwork down each side and on the reverse alongside the briefest of text background and a checklist for the waves Build-a-Figure. This build-a-figure was a wingsuit for Falcon, with Zemo coming with one wingtip Zemo is wearing the long coat that he sports for much of his time in Falcon & The Winter Soldier. This is a very dark purple-coloured piece with a textured fur collar that is painted in an off-white finish. The coat carries a number of other sculpted components including buttons, straps and pockets but carries no further paint work. Round the back, the fur lining sits upward exposing the rear collar and the paint application here is messy albeit out of sight for most displays. Under the coat is a purple roll neck shirt and a pair of black trousers that have been repurposed from an older suited body originating with the Coulson mould, although there are new feet with buckled straps and a touch of grey on each buckle to make them stand out. Zemo’s headsculpt is a wonderful likeness to actor Daniel Brühl with face printing adding to the likeness and in particular adding an intensity to the eyes. The hair piece is neat and swept to that neat side parting, coloured in brown and added onto the head as a separate piece to create a neat transition from skin to hair. Zemo also comes with his masked head, a purple-rigged head sculpt that still has an inserted head underneath (non-removable) that allows the skin tone and eyes to be visible in the eye holes of the mask. Further accessories include alternative hands, with Zemo able to switch between a pair of clenched fists to a right gripping hand, and an unusual left pointing finger hand which adds to the manesims of the character allowing you to pose him with his finger raised, gesturing for someone to stop. The gripping hand allows the included pistol to be wielded. This is sadly an ugly golden piece with soft and limited detail and very much comic book in its origins rather than being screen-accurate. Thankfully there are other options out there to swap this out with. There is no holster for this or any other weapon, but the articulation does allow a pose to show the gun being drawn out of the coat. The final accessory is the Winter Soldier Handbook seen in Captain America: Civil War. This is burgundy in colour with wearing and weathering around the sides and a faded but visible Soviet star in the centre of the front cover. It will also fit into Zemo’s gripping right hand. Considering this is a prop from Civil War and only seen briefly in the Disney+ Series via flashbacks, it is a nice nod from the Legends team to add it to the Marvel Legends MCU collection through this release. Zemo is a hybrid in terms of articulation with the lower half pinned and featuring the troublesome ankle rockers of the suited body which has a significant bearing on his balance. The legs are also more or less hemmed in by the coat so Zemo won’t be doing any kneeling or sitting. The upper torso is a newer design so there is a torso joint with a good range of movement, and pinless arms with a full range of motion. The 16 points in total are sufficient to pose Zemo and make use of the expressive arms and hand options to display him either brandishing his gun/book, preparing for a fistfight, or using his pointing finger. The 2021 MCU Baron Zemo does an excellent job of bringing the onscreen character to life in figure form. There are plenty of accessories and alternative parts to choose from, although the gun needed to be more realistic or left out completely from the set. The articulation does enough, but it is another example of the suited bodies on Marvel Legends desperately needing an update around those ankle rockers. - Review: Star Wars Black Series Saw Gerrera from Rogue One, Galaxy Collection Deluxe (2022)
“Save the Rebellion! Save the dream!” Saw Gerrera finally made his Star Wars Black Series action figure debut in 2022. He was released under the Galaxy Collection as a Deluxe release so the box is wider than standard but still features the same black base colouring, front window, and Cyan accent colour on the text and artwork. Saw Gerrera is the 10th release in the Rogue One Galaxy Collection, with his artwork connecting to the prior release, the Jedha Patrol Stormtrooper. While Saw is a Deluxe release, in hand he is a standard-sized figure with the Deluxe status granted due to the complexity of his outfit and the associated decor. He is depicted as seen during the events of Rogue One with his green armoured suit trimmed in lighter blue and silver. Within the chest piece are the various life support functions keeping Saw alive with silver sockets and connections and from one of these comes the clear oxygen tube and mask. The exposed right foot is a robotic limb and coloured in Gun Metal silver while the left foot is wearing a simple sandal with exposed toes. A similar contrast is found on Saw’s hands with a gloved left hand contrasting with the uncovered right hand. Further components are included around his belt which also features a holster for his blaster. And round the back the costume is finished with a low-slung cape in soft plastic. This is an older Onderanian banner that Saw is using as a cape and it's coloured in red and beige. The head sculpt is a strong likeness to Forest Whittaker in character with visible scarring on the forehead and cheek. The facial printing adds the realism in and around the eyes, while the hair and beard are sculpted and painted to match the onscreen look. There is a glossy finish to the head which was a theme at this time on lots of figures. While it can look sweaty which fits with Saw’s scenes on Jedha, it can detract from the overall look particularly where it reflects the light. The Oxygen mask mentioned earlier could be classed as the first of Saw’s accessories. It comes with the mask section clipped into a hook on the collar of his chest armour. From here it can be detached and held or placed over his mouth to recreate his aided breathing. As a Resistance Leader, we also expect Saw to feature a blaster. This comes in the form of a DH-16 Blaster Pistol with a silver colouring and wrapped grip in a brown leather finish. The blaster can be holstered on Saw’s right hip or held in the right hand which is the only one to feature a trigger finger. The final accessory is Saw’s staff which is sculpted in a dark wood colour with wooden twisting details interspersed with silver components. It fits in either of Saw’s hand and can be posed as a walking aid, or as an offensive weapon. Gerrera comes with 16 points of pinless articulation, all relatively well incorporated and disguised in the extensive armoured costume. The bulk of the upper armour in particular does cause some restriction in arm movement at the shoulder with Saw unable to raise his left arm very much because it pushes the outer skin of the armoured chest piece up and over the figure's face. There is sufficient movement to use the three included accessories, mainly employing the right arm. The legs provide a stable footing for display even with two very different feet that still coordinate using an ankle pivot to stand him securely. The leader of The Partisans is a particularly impressive Black Series release and I can see the complexity in the suit and its varied components. Whether this should therefore make it a Deluxe release remains questionable as he would have fit in a standard box which would then be easier to display for mint-in-box collectors. The original RRP was around the £33 mark at the time, but the figure was oversaturated and is still available at the time of this review for well under that original price mark and that seems odd considering the fandom’s feelings for the character and the impressive execution of the figure - glossy face decor aside.
