Review: Star Wars Retro Collection General Hera Syndulla from Ahsoka

“We have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.”

Hasbro’s Star Wars Retro Collection, which launched in 2019, initially began working on re-releasing figures from the original Kenner run, with the odd ‘never produced’ character added in, like Tarkin or Luke Skywalker Snowspeeder. The line then moved beyond its Original Trilogy remit, replicating figures initially for The Mandalorian, then slowly working its way across the Disney+ shows, including The Book of Boba Fett, Kenobi, and eventually the Ahsoka series. These single non-OT figures saw the line stumble and slow down, with many of these Disney+ figures becoming peg-warmers. The Ahsoka wave was the last to be released singularly, with the line moving to a six-figure box set format afterwards, and only The Acolyte from Disney+ would go on to be recreated in this Kenner Retro format, but as a box set.

The Ahsoka wave, released in 2023, was made up of 7 figures, including Ahsoka herself as well as key antagonists like Morgan Elsbeth and Marrock. Ahsoka’s allies were also well represented, including Sabine, Chopper, and the figure we are looking at here, General Hera Syndulla. Hera arrives on the same backing card design as used across the Retro Collection, mirroring the principles of the original Kenner figures with a black card edged with twin tramlines that connect to the top logo. This logo, specific to Ahsoka, is not the one used on the Disney+ titles, but instead is re-imagined to pay homage to Kenner’s logos for Empire and Return of the Jedi specifically. The card carries a large image of Hera taken from the series, and is branded under the Kenner badge rather than Hasbro. Around the back, the design deviates from the old Kenner checklists, and instead is a text-only cardback that details the principles of the Retro Collection, while the ‘checklist’ becomes a text-only section mid-card that lists the other Ahsoka figures in the Wave.

The General is wearing her pilot uniform as seen in Ahsoka, with an orange flightsuit, over which we have a brown vest and a larger brown leather-look jacket with a fur collar. The jacket features some smaller detail, with a rebel rank badge on the front and decals on each shoulder and on the jacket reverse. One arm carries the Rebellion Starbird while the other features the open circle fleet logo. The rear of the jacket has a larger decal representing the crew of The Ghost.

The legs of Hera’s flight suit include a sculpted belt, with incorporated holster and leg straps, all of which are painted in brown, with a silver belt buckle and straps. The outfit concludes with gloss black boots.

Hera’s head sculpt is in keeping with the Kenner figures, a basic form that is identifiable as Hera, but nowhere near the realism and accuracy we see on modern lines. The head is a green skin tone, with black used to pick out the eyes and eyebrows, and a pink tone on the lips. Hera is wearing her flight headgear, painted in brown, with the flight goggles incorporated into the sculpt and the lenses of these picked out in black. Her twin Lekku extend from the back of her head and stretch down over her back.

We have the usual five points of articulation across the hips, shoulders and neck. Like the origins Bib Fortuna, the Lekku on Hera does limit the neck articulation to an extent. This basic posing allows a limited level of movement, as with all Kenner-era figures, with the most common poses being used to hold the included blaster in a firing position. The blaster itself is a new piece, twin-barreled, and cast in black. It fits into Hera’s hands and can also be holstered on the leg.

Hera is one of the better Disney+ Retro Collection figures, displaying well with her complementary companions like Ahsoka or Sabine, but also fitting in well with the original Kenner releases like X-Wing Luke or the Rebel Hoth characters.

About Me : As a child of the '70s and '80s I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I. Joe (Action Force), and M.A.S.K. while also dabbling in He-Man, Transformers and Ghostbusters. Roll forward and I am now reliving that Youth with the action figures of today and am a collector and fan of the larger 6-8 inch figures from my favourite movie and TV licenses - including the ones mentioned above, but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Who, and the Aliens. I launched The Mephitsu Archives in 2015 with a view of creating a UK-focused site or these figures where fans can pick up the latest action figure news, read reviews and get information on where to buy their figures and what is currently on store shelves. I hope I am delivering that to you guys...
