"Cav, you got point. Find their trail."

"Misty, if it was you, where would you be?"

Task Force 99, or SCAR Squadron as they are also called, are an Elite team of Stormtroopers who appear in the Star Wars Comics from 2015, with storylines set during the events following the Battle of Yavin. The first of Hasbro’s Task Force 99 Black Series figures. Sergeant Kreel arrived in 2022 in the 2nd wave of Publishing figures. He was followed in 2023 by SCAR Trooper Mic, part of Wave 3 of the Publishing series. This publishing series takes characters from the Star Wars novels and comics, both canon and Legends, packing them in book-style boxes with an opening front cover and using artwork from the original publication. Since the line launched fully in 2021, all the releases have been single figures apart from the Last Command 4-Pack from the Thrawn Trilogy. The first two-pack in the series is the SCAR Trooper set of Misty and Cav, arriving in May 2026 as a Hasbro Pulse Exclusive and bringing your Task Force 99 squad up to four of the seven confirmed members.

Like all Publishing releases, the Misty and Cav set is a closed box with an opening front cover that carries the artwork from Issue 23 with five members of the Task Force lined up against a red-hued backdrop. Misty and Cav are lined up either side of Sergeant Kreel. The side panel to the right reads like a book spine, confirming the contents and with an illustration of both Troopers. The remaining three panels are laid out with black and white comic book artwork. The rear of the box uses more comic book art and inset panels along with the usual copyright and legal text.

The front cover is held closed by a Velcro circular dot, and once opened, a fifth panel of comic book art can be viewed, and inset into this is the short background text we usually find on the rear of Black Series boxes. This simply confirms that Misty and Cav serve under Sergeant Kreel as part of the SCAR Squadron, otherwise known as Task Force 99. The figures are accessed via top or bottom flaps and come in an inner plastic tray that itself sits in a grey comic book art illustrated backdrop.

Both Stormtroopers are built onto the existing Stormtrooper body, with updated parts to reflect their position in Task Force 99 and the specialist gear that they equip for missions. Starting with Misty, we find each armoured panel is, as usual, cast in high gloss white plastic with the joints in black plastic with ribbing to replicate the Stormtroopers’ inner jumpsuit. The main armour configuration for Misty is that of a standard Stormtrooper and therefore the same as the 2020 release

Enhancements to Misty’s gear come in the shape of a new belt with updated pouches, a thigh pouch on the left leg, and a shin holster on the right leg, which holds her combat knife. These are all cast in a softer black plastic and applied over the base body. This does mean the thigh and shin straps can slip up and down the leg, relying only on the elasticity and grip of the strap to hold in position.

Misty wears a standard Stormtrooper bucket with black eye visors, black trim across the blue and grey and blue markings to the sides. The nose and mouth vents are similarly black with some silver detailing, and the two inset panels around the back are painted grey. The helmet is hollow, with the sculpted head within, but the head is unpainted, and the helmet cannot be removed without significant customisation.

Misty’s poncho is soft goods and a thin, lightweight fabric similar to that used on Jedi robes. The dull brown robes are tailored to sit on the Trooper’s shoulders with the hood around the helmet, and able to sit upward over the helmet or folded down. The hood is adorned with a red stripe down the centre, as seen in the comics. The soft goods work well, sitting naturally around the body, even with the hood pulled up.

Misty comes with a knife accessory that sits in her shin holster. This is a silver blade piece with sculpted serrations and a black handle with a silver pommel. When not holstered, she can hold it reasonably well in either hand, although the grip is not secure, as the hands are shaped predominantly for her Sniper Rifle.

This Sniper Rifle is new to the line and is cast in black and features an extended barrel, square and blocky scope, and inset blue panels on either side to simulate it being powered up. It is designed to sit snugly into Misty’s right hand with the left then being a cradling support for two-handed poses, both in a relaxed 'cradled' grip, but also when raised up to fire.

We move to Cav now, who also utilises much of the base Stormtrooper body and configuration, with the obvious exception of his robotic left arm. This is all new and cast in a dark, gunmetal grey with red trim and blue power indicators. It is covered with a custom pauldron in gloss white to match the rest of the Stormtrooper armour.

Cav also has a custom chest piece with the front incorporating a plugged-in and glued black sheath to hold three of his combat knives. Around the back, the standard Stormtrooper back section is instead fitted with a jetpack, using the same piece as Sergeant Kreel. This is a black finish too, and arguably out of place as Cav doesn’t deploy a jetpack, being the close combat specialist of the team. Further equipment enhancements, similar to those for Misty, can be found starting with an updated belt with additional pouches painted quite badly in black with very messy edges visible. Cav also has a right thigh holster with a sheath for another combat knife.

Cav’s helmet is also the stock Stromtrooper lid with the same black visors and trim, and grey, silver and blue markings and vent decor. Cav’s specific battle-worn ‘x’ marking above and over the left eye piece is painted rather than being sculpted as damage in the helmet. Like Misty, the helmet is fixed over an unpainted sculpted head and is not removable.

Cav’s weaponry includes four combat knives, all of which are the same as the one included with Misty, with a silver serrated blade and black grip with a silver pommel. The knives can all be sheathed on the figure with three across the chest and the fourth in the thigh holster. They can also be handheld, using either the normal right hand or the robotic left hand, allowing for single or dual knife-wielding poses extended outward or reversed in a backward grip.

Cav also has a custom blaster, another new piece that has similarities to the Battle Droid weaponry from the Clone Wars, but stubbier. It incorporates a large grip, an upper barrel, and a long, thin scope on top. There is no holstering option for this, so Cav can only hold it with his right gripping hand.

Both Misty and Cav are constructed with 19 points of pinless articulation. The legs feature the usual hip joints, with a thigh swivel tucked in behind the thigh armour. Further rotation can be found at the knee, which also bends beyond 90 degrees to support the ability for both Troopers’ to sit or kneel. The legs are secured with robust ankle rockers with very hefty ratchets and movement forward, backward and to an extent laterally for wider dynamic poses.

The upper body includes a chest ball joint sitting between the stomach piece and chest armour, allowing for both rotation of the upper torso, but also leaning forward or backward positions. The neck is twin-jointed, allowing the helmet to rotate and be positioned looking up, down, or cocked to look down the barrel of a weapon, which is particularly relevant for Misty as the Sniper.

The arms feature shoulders sitting in a butterfly joint and supported by soft, hinged pauldrons that move when the arm is raised. The elbows bend past 90 degrees as well as rotate, with the wrists also featuring a pivot peg and rotation. These all combine into plenty of positions for both wielding the combat knives or either of the Trooper’s blasters.

For fans of the Star Wars Comics and in particular the stories featuring Task Force 99, it is good to see Hasbro are committing to team building even outside of the main sources from the movies and the Disney+ series. That being said, these are at their core re-releases with only a handful of new parts needed for each additional SCAR Trooper - in this set its the holsters, straps, and Cav’s bionic arm. The supporting accessories are all relevant and I love that Misty is given her own Sniper rifle and doesn’t recycle one already int he line, while both get combat knives that all slip in and out of holsters even if Cav can only wield two at once.

The Publishing Series also has the nicest packaging design in the line, with this being the first two-pack and proof that the duo-pack format works, even if you do lose the overall shape of a standard book. The comic book art chosen for the box is crisp and clear, and even if you’ve picked this up without any significant experience of the SCAR Squadron stories, the artwork draws you into wanting to find out more.

As an exclusive, it's not significantly overpriced at £44.99, but it can only be sourced through Hasbro Pulse, so there will be shipping to pay unless your a Premium Member or you combine it with other figures into a larger order. It's also an exclusive that presents as a relatively easy miss for those not collecting outside of the main movies and/or TV shows. But for those invested in the Publishing expansion of the 6-inch figures, and particularly those who already own Kreel and Mic, this represents another step towards a complete SCAR squadron display.

About Me : As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I. Joe (Action Force) and M.A.S.K. while also dabbling in He-Man, Transformers and Ghostbusters. Roll forward and I am now reliving that Youth with the action figures of today and am a collector and fan of the larger 6-8 inch figures from my favourite movie and TV licences - including the ones mentioned above, but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Who and the Aliens. I launched The Mephitsu Archives in 2015 with a view of creating a UK focused site or these figures where fans can pick up the latest action figure news, read reviews and get information on where to buy their figures and what is currently on store shelves. I hope I am delivering that to you guys...
