Review: Star Wars Black Series Boba Fett, Droids Exclusive

"Your meddling has cost me my droid, my speeder and almost my neck, Tig Fromm."

2022 was certainly a bumper year for Boba Fett fans after his return to Star Wars live-action in the 2021 Disney+ Book of Boba Fett series. There were several new Boba Fett figures released by Hasbro in the Star Wars Black series - reflecting Boba’s latest appearances, but also revisiting a few old classics including his appearance in the 1985 spin-off series Droids, a look which itself pays homage to Boba’s first on-screen appearance from the 1977 Star Wars Holiday Special.

The Droids Boba Fett was released under the Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary badge, and while not necessarily a Publishing release it did use the same packaging principle with a closed box design using artwork from Droids. The packaging then featured an opening front cover, held in place with Velcro, which revealed the figure within.

Like most Boba Fett figures to date, the Droids variant was a direct repaint of the original 2013 Boba Fett figure from The Empire Strikes Back. For the Droids' appearance, Boba’s entire colour pallet was updated with a very light grey base colour over which was added a beige chest section, sky blue armour pieces and brown knee pads, belt, holster, and Wookiee pelt trophies. Like the first release, the helmet carries the signature dent to the front left and a fixed range finder which now looks quite chunky compared to more modern Mandalorian releases - its softer plastic is a warp risk.

Boba’s Droids look is finished off with his soft goods cape, brown i colour and with a thick orange trim. These orange-trimmed sections create a more rigid feel to the cape which sits in the neatly folded position and with little flow or play. Boba’s jet pack finishes off the look, and this connects to the rear of the figure with a longer central peg and two smaller positioning clips. The jet pack is cast in a beige plastic with painted blue rocket boosters, and some white trim added to the rocket.

The Droids Boba Fett contains the same weaponry as the 2013 release with a hand blaster that slots into the provided holster. This is cast in grey with no other specific detailing, it can be wielded in either hand with both right and left grips including a flexible trigger finger. The longer EE-3 blaster carbine carries more sculpted detail but also lacks any paintwork over the base grey. It too fits in either hand, or both hands for two-handed weapons posing - be aware that some of the two-handed posing positions will see the Blaster Carbine start to warp at the central point if held too long.

As an early Black Series release body, the Droids Boba Fett brings with it the older articulation configuration with 16 points of articulation overall including double-joint knees. While not as extensive as a more modern figure - and a little awkward to pose in places - Boba does have sufficient motion for slinging his weapons, posing with his various wrist weaponry or taking flight with the jet pack.

The choice of the older buck was also a shame when the newer Return of the Jedi Boba Fett was available with a cleaner look and partially improved articulation. As an exclusive, the figure also carried a premium price - although the UK availability via the Fan Channel was quite extensive leading to a lot of peg warming stock and reduced pricing. The figure is an oddity in the wider Black Series not linked directly to any of the other sub-lines and its key issue is its standalone nature, with no C-3PO or R2-D2 figures to accompany it. One for the completists, and those who are big fans of Droids - but with little chance of adding to a Droids collection in the future.

About Me : As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I. Joe (Action Force) and M.A.S.K. while also dabbling in He-Man, Transformers and Ghostbusters. Roll forward and I am now reliving that Youth with the action figures of today and am a collector and fan of the larger 6-8 inch figures from my favourite movie and TV licences - including the ones mentioned above, but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Who and the Aliens. I launched The Mephitsu Archives in 2015 with a view of creating a UK focused site or these figures where fans can pick up the latest action figure news, read reviews and get information on where to buy their figures and what is currently on store shelves. I hope I am delivering that to you guys...
