Review : Prototype Boba Fett (Wallgreens US Exclusive 2014) Star Wars Black Series

Updated: Nov 24, 2018

I will admit that before this year I knew very little about the White Suit Prototype Boba Fett. I had seen it in 3.75" version and once in Cosplay at a Convention, but always assumed it was something from the expanded universe. Now I have researched further and seen the test shots on Youtube it kind of has lost the mystery for me, but regardless this is a gorgeous looking figure - especially for fans of the Mandalorian Armour.

Proto Boba is a Wallgreens Exclusive in the US and got a limited UK release through A1 comics, a Scottish based comic book chain. Boba is exactly what an exclusive should be - a repaint of a niche character that wont impact on a collection if you choose to pass. He comes in the new blue trim box, but without any identifying numbers.

Although this has started to sneak through to some none US retailers, it has been a tough one to get hold of at a reasonable price in the UK. As with my Sandtrooper, that arrived at same time, the price I paid did mean a rough box.

Proto Boba is pretty much the same as standard Boba, coming in his tray with blaster, rifle and a backpack. He is also a straight on repaint with no tweaks to the sculpt, so he still comes with dinted helmet. However the paint job cant be knocked, this is not a smothering of white - there are shade differences which give the armour real depth. This time round the guns arent painted and I also am told these are not accurate to this version of Boba. The cape is white with some grey detailing, but on mine and unlike the original version it didnt flow right and took some playing with till it looked how it should

Proto Boba pretends to be nothing else than a cool looking figure if you look past the accuracy and how canon the figure is. You can use your imagination as to whether this is a post ROTJ Boba escaped from the Sarlac, or simply another Mandalorian or some kind of Imperial Super Trooper.

There are very few downsides, so I give Boba a 4/5 - downmarking him for the limited UK availability, the unpainted rifle and the dodgy cape. Just need Hasbro to either make this one more widespread so we can repaint our own Mandalorians, or get cracking on Jango Fett and perhaps a couple of Mandalorians from the Clone Wars.
