Review : Marvel Legends Mk27 "Disco" Armour, Iron-Man 3

The Mk27 "Disco" Iron-Man armour was released in 2016 in a two pack alongside the new Mk3 War-Machine as seen in Civil War. The Mk27 was the first release from Iron-Man 3 in the modern Legends line, but itself was a re-use of the original Iron Patriot mould from the 2013 Legends "Ultron" BAF wave.

nb. Our review figure was purchase on the secondary market complete with box, the War-Machine was missing and we have added our own War Machine to the box for the gallery images

Packaging 3/5

The packaging for the Mk27 uses the same scalloped sides as the normal Legends, with a wider to accommodate both figures. War Machine is pictured on the left spine, with the Mk27 on the right. The front of the box is a bit mismatched having used two logo's front and centre. The Civil War one makes sense for War Machine, but they have then used a red Avengers logo for the Mk27.

" Iron Man enters stealth mode with the camouflaging capabilities of the Mark 26 armor."

Paint & Sculpt 3/5

Essentially Hasbro have taken the original 2013 Iron Patriot figure, itself re-used in 2015 for the War Machine Mk2, and recoloured it to the bright orange and purple of the Mk27. There is nothing wrong with this in principle as the sculpt is crisp and a good match to what we see on screen. The only downsides are the size, with the Mk27 being a litte slim and short, and the chest piece where the team have cheated by painting a white circular arc reactor in the rectangular section from Iron Patriot/War Machine.

We have to state here that Hasbro have listed this figure as a "concept" piece. This is kind of a get out clause as the figure is not quite accurate to the Mk27 we see briefly in Iron-Man 3. The colouring is approximate, but the orange should be more metallic. And that chest piece should be bulkier with a large circular arc reactor.

The plastic is cast in purple and does show some stress lines in places. The Orange is painted on top and is well applied in the main. The only other applications are the silver of the elbow ratchet joints and the white eyes. Sadly a very intrusive code mark has been applied to the rear thigh (why not the bottom of the foot?).

Accessories 2/5

Mk27 comes with the same rear mounted cannon as per Iron Patriot / War Machine. This is cast in grey metallic plastic with no paint apps. It can be slotted into either of the two rear slots, but works best in the right.

The Mk27 never had a rear cannon, so the inclusion of this fits in with that "concept" word again. But as it is not fixed you can choose to leave it off.

It is a pity there are now alternative hands for Mk27, with the figure coming only with balled fists. Some open repulsor firing hands would have been nice.

Articulation 3/5

Articulation is very much of an older design, being from the 2013 release. We have 18 points in total, but the knees are single jointed and the ankle rockers quite restricted

Head - ball joint with pivot

Body - mid-torso ball joint

Arms - ball joint shoulders, bicep swivel, double jointed elbows, pivot wrist

Legs - ball joint hips, thigh swivel, single joint knee, ankle rocker

It is also worth noting the two shoulder panels are jointed to move with the arm, and the rear cannon is also articulated in two places to allow it to raise/lower and to swivel.

Articulation will allow for firing positions on the arms, but the legs have little movement other than wider stances - or perhaps a raised knee flying pose with an appropriate flight stand.

Summary

While the dream of having Marvel Legends versions of all 42 Iron-Man suits seen in Iron-Man 3 is a not going to ever happen, it is nice to get the odd variant version of an Iron-Man, particularly when it moves away from the usual red/gold colour scheme.

The Mk27 is an obvious repaint of an older figure and while that is fine, it does mean the figure is a little short and slim vs the newer figures it stands up against. We should be realistic in that this was never going to get a new sculpt and it was this version or nothing.

Considering this is a two pack figure alongside a very good War Machine figure, I score it an above average 3 out of 5.
