Review : Marvel Legends Captain America, Quantum Suit, Avengers : Endgame

Updated: Oct 22, 2019

Captain America, in his Quantum Realm Suit, from Avengers : Endgame was released in early 2019 as part of the Armoured Thanos BAF wave. Cap was the only figure not to include a BAF part. In September 2019, the figure was repacked as part of a UK slim blister re-pack of MCU Marvel Legend figures - this is the figure we are reviewing today.

Packaging 3/5

The new slimline packaging being sold in the UK is a thick cardback in glossy black on top of which is a slim line blister holding the figure. The Legends logo sits top right, and the movie logo takes up much more of the card header. Under this is the character name in a blue strip and an image of Cap from Endgame peeking in from the side. The card includes a backing coloured panel for the figure, in this instance the light blue with Avengers "A" logo - the same as is used on the boxed version.

The back of the card carries a larger Marvel Legends logo and a larger image of Captain America. Like all Legends releases, there is then a short text piece. The rest of the card is made up of legal and safety notices.

The figure can't be opened without damaging the card with the blister sandwiched between the card backing. Once open the figure pops out in an inner plastic tray, held in by the shape of the tray - there are no twist ties.

While this new packaging cuts down on the waste for collectors who open their figures, it isn't overly friendly for anyone who may want to open and re-seal their figures. Being a blister card it will also be prone to shelf damage - particularly curling and feathering around the card edge.

Paint & Sculpt 3/5

They key issue with the figure, as we are all aware, is the screen accuracy issue. The silver and black suits used by Hasbro were obviously an earlier concept and were replaced on screen by the more impressive white versions. With Hasbro committed to the Silver version across all their Endgame figure products, we are left with something that is akin to the Quantum Suits, but not a good match.

The head used is that from an Avengers Battle of New York Cap, and while this is a new sculpt it is most likely the one coming in the 3rd wave of Avengers Legends. The sculpt is a good likeness to Chris Evans, even with the helmet, and the helmet itself is shaped well with a clear A logo and the winged designs to either side. Face print technology is used and that gives us very realistic eyes. But there is an issue with the chin strap which has some flesh tone bleed. Like the suit, the head is not overly screen accurate and as you will see later (see figure hacks section) the figure is much improved when you use an unmasked Steve Rogers head.

The body, despite the inaccuracies, is a good sculpt with loads of panel detail as well as textures on the black panels. The A logo isn't particularly neat with paint fouling the inner areas. Other detail includes the Quantum device on Cap's left hand.

Accessories 3/5

Cap comes with his Shield, the same Shield as has been used in the various Captain America releases for some time. As this is a re-use, it also remains slightly oversized for the figure. The two straps remain the same on the reverse.

Because the body isn't a dedicated Cap body the hand is not quite shaped to hold the shield and it will take a bit of work to get the Shield secure on the body. To get Cap holding the Shield you will either need to pop off the hand and then locate the shield before putting it back. Or, you can heat up and flex the fingers to grip the strap.

Articulation 3/5

The Quantum Suit body has 19 points of articulation, making it particularly good for posing and display.

Head : ball joint pivot neck

Body : torso T-joint, swivel waist

Arms : ball joint shoulder, bicep swivel, double joint elbows, pivot wrists

Legs : ball joint hips, thigh swivel, double joint knees, ankle rockers

There are flaws though. The waist is very loose and the hips are also going that way, with Cap often sliding into the splits. The ankle rockers are ratcheted, but don't easily ratchet and line up for his feet to be flat to the floor - this creates some issues in standing up Cap. The head joint is also very loose so while the head is quite stiff to rotate, it does flop forward under its own weight.

Summary

The Captain America in Quantum Suit is a figure, like many early Legend releases, that sacrificed screen accuracy - basing itself on concept designs - in order to be on shelves before the movie hit our screens.

With that being said, the figure is a nice looking one and in the absence of a correct Quantum Suit - these will look great when team built. The head looks like it belongs on another figure, which of course it does, and I think many collectors will ditch this head and replace it with one of the spares from a Power & Glory Cap or the First Ten Years Civil war version.

I score the Quantum Suit Captain America an above average 3 out of 5. While it has flaws, it is still a nice looking figure - that can look even better with a bit of work swapping parts with other releases. And in the new slimline packaging it is even better value.

Figure Hacks

As we have alluded to several times in the review above, the beauty of this figure is the ability to drop on different heads to build up your Avengers Quantum Suit team - this is something Hasbro have obviously planned considering the two pack of Quantum Suits which includes this male body and the variant heads included.

My preference for the Quantum Team is unmasked heads, and that is my aim in building out the team. To start with I have access only to Tony Stark and Steve Rogers heads, all of which do work and look great on the Quantum Suit.

The Tony Stark head fits straight off without any issue, but the loose pivot neck will cause it to slip around. The Steve Rogers heads from the recent Power & Glory or MCU First Ten Years set will need to be warmed up gently to tease them onto the body. Once in place they are a bit stiff, but can still be moved around. For me the Power & Glory head is the best looking and is the one I have left in place as I build my Quantum Suit Avengers team.
