Happy Easter #SatTOYday everyone!
I must say that I am not a huge fan of April Fools, particularly in the current age of social media and deep fakes. While some are so ridiculous, it is easy to spot, others are so close to reality that it does get frustrating when you find out it is a joke. I never partake in April Fools on my site, so no fake news in this week's issue - and hopefully none of you were caught out by the HasLab Cobra Hisstank, the Marvel Legends Wolverine Origins Wave or the Mephisto wave....
That being said, the week did bring us some great new Action Figure News with two new Marvel Legends reveals from Hasbro and a very impressive unveiling from NECA in their new An American Werewolf in London range of figures. Mezco put their new Wolverine up for pre-order this week, and The Loyal Subjects were showing off new images of their BST AXN figures from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Gremlins.
Only one new review this week from me, the Star Wars Black Series Boba Fett Deluxe figure from Return of the Jedi. If you prefer a video showcase of new figures, we have this covered too as I am resurrecting my YouTube channel.
Have a great weekend... and don't eat too much chocolate
Please be mindful in this week's newsletter there are some minor spoilers for Falcon & The Winter Soldier if you have not started watching the show, or particularly are not caught up with Episode 2.
NECA American Werewolf in London
The recently announced license to produce figures from An American Werewolf in London got another reveal this week courtesy of NECA. Following on from the teaser image of the Kessler Werewolf is a full reveal for an Ultimate format Nightmare Demon.
These Demons, seen in a dream sequence, feature four different head sculpts in the set as well as weapons and a flaming torch. Sold individually, collectors can choose to purchase as many as they wish to recreate the scenes from the movie. The Nightmare Demons are planned for an August 2021 release.
NECA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
NECA have been teasing a set focusing on the origins of Splinter from the 1990 TMNT movie for a while now. This week, on the movie's 31st Anniversary, we got a clearer look at the figure of Hamato Yoshi, Splinters Master. The figure is pictured alongside a hanging bird-cage, and the older teaser images also show an included pet rat (Splinter). Anotehr earlier image shows Hamato Yoshi facing up to Oroku Saki who will go on to become Splinter, we believe he will be included in the set.
NECA are however making us wait for more details and confirmations, including how the set will be sold - will it be exclusive to Walmart in the US, or be sold direct from NECA globally like the recent Tokka and Rahzar?
In episode 2 of The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, we got a proper introduction to John F Walker, the new Captain America. During his lively intro scene, we see him signing an action figure of himself for a fan. It seems that was an opportunity too good to pass up for Hasbro, and as revealed on 'Marvel Must Have' Monday was a Marvel Legends 6 inch John Walker, specially packed in a box to replicate the one seen on screen.
John comes with two head options - masked and unmasked - and the Captain America Shield. He is not part of the Disney+ wave that we already know contains Wanda and Vision, but is exclusive in the US to Walmart - and sold here via the Fan Channel route and Hasbro Pulse UK. The figure will be released in July 2021
The 1st Monday of each month is usually Marvel Monday and fans can look forward to new Marvel Legends pre-orders from Hasbro. As the first Monday in April is Easter Monday, the reveal was brought forward to the 1st of the Month and an unveiling of the latest Spider-Man Retro release, Web-Man.
Web-Man features the usual retro Toybiz inspired card art and will be packed with two alternative sets of web-slinger hands.
There will also, as confirmed in the Hasbro press release, be a 2021 re-release for the Retro Carded Deadpool. This figure was formally a 2019 exclusive, but will now be a general release in 2021 to celebrate Deadpool's 30th Anniversary
Mezco One:12 Wolverine
A new One:12 Collective Wolverine figure was announced by Mezco in February 2021 as part of their ToyzFair online event. The figure has now gone up for pre-order, and with this we get a full look at the set and contents.
Wolverine will be a deluxe release and is listed as the Steel Box Edition. It is unclear if this means a standard version is also in the works. The Special Edition features a staggering 8 heads for Wolverine, including two to recreate his first appearance look. You also get a number of hand options, including two sets of Adamantium Claws and a set of Bone Claws. A number of dynamic slicing FX pieces are also included. There is also an alternative belt option for the costume, swap-out belt buckle, and the usual stand and display base.
The set also then includes a large diorama display base of a fallen Sentinel, complete with light-up functions and a removable eyepiece. As a deluxe release, Wolverine is a higher price than usual with a US RRP of $155. He is due to ship between October and December 2021.
Loyal Subjects BST AXN
The Loyal Subjects BST AXN line of 5-inch figures is releasing both Buffy and Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer this Spring. This week we were given a closer look at Angel who features two head options - normal and vampire - and is armed with both a sword and an axe.
The BST AXN line is exclusive to Target in the US and sold via specialist stockists here in the UK and they are also showing up in B&M stores. Don't expect any of the licenses to go deep into the character roster, we are likely to see main principle characters only.
The BST AXN line is also tackling figures from the 1984 classic Gremlins. The first release will be Stripe, complete with skateboard and chainsaw. There is no confirmed release window as yet for Stripe, but considering the images are of what looks to be a production sample and packaging it can't be too far away.
Storm Collectibles Street Fighter
The next release in the Storm Collectibles 6-inch Street Fighter range will be Evil Ryu, complete with his chest injury. The figure features three heads, a number of hand options, 'Hadoken' special move FX piece, and a number of other red energy pieces that attach to the body for what Storm are calling the 'evil effect'. Evil Ryu is planned as a Q3 release in 2021.
This week saw Iron Studios unveil a new Marvel comic book 1/10 Art Scale figure of Quicksilver. The statue will feature Pietro in a dynamic running pose as he crosses a disintegrating diorama scene. It will be a Q4 2021 release.
This Weeks Action Figure Reviews...
About Me : As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I. Joe (Action Force) and M.A.S.K. while also dabbling in He-Man, Transformers and Ghostbusters. Roll forward and I am now reliving that Youth with the action figures of today and am a collector and fan of the larger 6-8 inch figures from my favourite movie and TV licences - including the ones mentioned above, but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Who and the Aliens. I launched The Mephitsu Archives in 2015 with a view of creating a UK focused site or these figures where fans can pick up the latest action figure news, read reviews and get information on where to buy their figures and what is currently on store shelves. I hope I am delivering that to you guys...
