Happy #SatTOYday everyone!
The NECA news and teases kept coming this week with new reveals in their horror Ultimate line and Toony Terrors and a better look at a couple of upcoming releases. There was also more info on their Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Lootcrate figures with images now released for the 2nd crate Armaggon figure and the bonus Scrag figure.
We are getting closer now to the Kevin Smith Masters of the Universe Netflix show, and while there are no images as yet there are some listings going live for the figures from Revelation that we can look forward to this Autumn.
Hasbro bookended the week with Marvel Legend reveals at the start and Star Wars Black Series at the end. Please heed our spoiler warning before scrolling to the Hasbro news.
Reviews this week included the final figure and BAF from the Hasbro Ghostbusters line and a couple of older Marvel Legends MCU figures I've been tracking down.
This week's issue includes some images and details that you may find spoilerific if you are avoiding any details of the Black Widow movie (outside what is shown on the trailer) or if you haven't yet seen the final episodes of Wanda Vision. I've put this news at the end of the article.
Not content with the addition of the Universal Monsters to their 7 inch Horror Movie range, NECA teased this week that figures are on their way from the 1981 classic An American Werewolf in London. The image shows a transformed David Kessler as the Werewolf and this appears to be in the usual 7 inch style, most likely an Ultimate format release. We await more information.
The NECA Jaws products took a bit of a hit when their Chief Hopper figure was cancelled, but they are pressing on with Jaws products, and particularly with Bruce the Shark and Quint as the main focus. The duo will join the Toony Terrors line this year as a Deluxe pack featuring a full Quint Toony Terror figure - complete with machete and spear - and a Bruce the Shark which is sculpted to look like its swimming across your shelf surface.
The next Horror licence to arrive with NECA is the Puppet Master packs, each featuring two puppets from the 1989 Puppet Master film. The packaging design was revealed this week and this new format uses the original VHS cover for the artwork inspiration, but then replicates the Trunk from the movie to open the box to reveal the figures within.
As a build on last weeks announcement of the Lootcrate / NECA partnership with a new series of 4 Turtles Lootcrates, this week saw a formal press release and some new images for the contents including the reveal of the bonus figure Scrag who will be a Cartoon based release and will come with both human and bat head.
There was also a (late in the week) reveal of the new Armaggon figure from Crate 2 who is taken from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Arcade game.
NECA Defenders of the Earth
The NECA Defenders of the Earth Series 1 figures of Flash Gordon, The Phantom and Ming the Merciless are shipping into Walmart stores in the US now as part of an early release exclusive deal. This week saw the wider pre-order window open at other retailers, including here in the UK where a release date sometime from May 2021 onward is being quoted. This new info and pre-order details brought with it some new images of the three figures.
The next NECA Predator 2 Ultimate Lost Tribe release will be the Shaman Predator, and NECA took some time out this week to share this behind the scenes work in progress image which gives some indication of the contents (subject to change) of the set when it lands.
McFarlane DC Multiverse
While its existence has been known about for a few weeks thanks to leaks and wholesaler images, the McFarlane DC Multiverse 2-Pack of Superman vs Batman Devastator has gone up for pre-order with an April 2021 release date. Both figures are repacks, although Superman has got a new head update for this set. A diorama base is also included.
Storm Collectibles Mortal Kombat
Storm are expanding their 6 inch Mortal Kombat roster later this year with the arrival of Kung Lao. He will feature two head options and a number of interchangeable hands. He also comes with two hats, one to wear and the other including an effect piece for one of his signature moves. This will pair up with the blood splatter effect to add some gore to your display. Kung Lao also comes with the 'Friendship' Rabbit from the alternative finisher to the fatality from MKII.
Mattel Masters of the Universe
While we have no images as yet, the new line of 7 inch scale Masters of the Universe Revelation figures, based on the Netflix Kevin Smith sequel series, have been listed via Sonner Toys in the UK confirming the line up of He-Man, Teela, Skeletor, Spikor, Mossman, Man at Arms, Evil-Lyn and Beast Man and a deluxe Battle Cat. They are all expected around Autumn 2021.
Apex Legends by Jakks Pacific
The 3rd series of 6 inch figures by Jakks Pacific for their Apex Legends line have been unveiled and put up for pre-order with a release sometime in the 2nd quarter of 2021. The three figure wave features Mirage, Pathfinder and Bloodhound - each with game appropriate weaponry and accessories.
This weeks Iron Studios news stays with the Harry Potter theme from last week with another 1/10 Art Scale release in the shape of Harry Potter riding Buckbeak from the Prisoner of Azkaban. The piece is due for a Q4 2021 release.
(this is your last Spoiler Warning)
Hasbro have announced a new 2-pack of figures from the upcoming Black Widow movie. The set features the Red Guardian and Melina Vostokoff - both featured in the trailers for Black Widow - in their respective suits. Red Guardian has already been released in an unmasked version but was criticised in its accuracy of the look that actor David Harbour sports in the film. The new version includes masked and unmasked versions of the head and a cool Red Guardian scaled action figure which we assume is seen in the movie.
Melina is wearing a white jumpsuit, similar to those already released for Black Widow and Yelena Belova. The blurb on the back of the box and with the press release indicates Melina's origins, so watch out for that if you click the link for the full story.
Disney are running an event through 2021 called 'Marvel Must Haves' which is a similar principle to their Mando Monday process with new multi media and multi company products revealed each Monday through 2021 - aligned very much with the Disney+ content at the time. After the first few for 2021 presented just Funko Pops! and T-Shirts, this week saw the first action figure reveal with the new Marvel Legends 'Project Cataract' white Vision.
The new figure is believed to be part of a Disney+ wave which is going to be revealed slowly over the course of the year. We'd expect more on Monday 8th after the WandaVision finale and then see the reveals move on to figures from The Falcon & Winter Solider and then to Loki.
Star Wars Black Series
The Star Wars Gaming Greats line, as we know, is moving into Phase 4 packaging and following the reveal of the Deluxe Cal Kestis a couple of weeks ago, a new figure was confirmed this week.
The Imperial Rocket Trooper looks to actually be numbered ahead of Cal Kestis, although not necessarily #01 in the series if Hasbro are announcing these out of sequence. The figure is based on the Trooper's appearance in Battlefront 2 and therefore the colour scheme of ice blue for gaming greats is confirmed to cover all releases from any game. The figure is a re-use of the 2019 Jet Trooper from Star Wars Rebels and you can see a comparison below of the two versions. The Trooper is a Gamestop exclusive in the US and in the UK is a fan channel exclusive.
This Weeks Action Figure Reviews...
About Me : As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I. Joe (Action Force) and M.A.S.K. while also dabbling in He-Man, Transformers and Ghostbusters. Roll forward and I am now reliving that Youth with the action figures of today and am a collector and fan of the larger 6-8 inch figures from my favourite movie and TV licences - including the ones mentioned above, but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Who and the Aliens. I launched The Mephitsu Archives in 2015 with a view of creating a UK focused site or these figures where fans can pick up the latest action figure news, read reviews and get information on where to buy their figures and what is currently on store shelves. I hope I am delivering that to you guys...
