SatTOYday Roundup : Issue 162

Happy #SatTOYday everyone!

We should be heading into Toy Fair 2021 this weekend, but of course that event has been cancelled due to Covid 19. A lot of the companies are planning their own virtual and online reveals over the coming weeks and we will ensure we cover these events as and when they take place.

In this weeks news we have confirmation of the NECA Universal Monsters range incoming in Summer as well as the packaging for Defenders of the Earth. There is also some new Jazwares product for Halo and Fortnite and another McFarlane Batman figure to look forward to in their DC Multiverse line.

Reviews this week were very much Star Wars Black Series focused as I finished off a look at the Archive figures of Han Solo & Luke Skywalker Hoth and then moved onto the latest main wave from the Galaxy Collection with reviews for Greef Karga and Kuill.

NECA Universal Monsters

The big news of the week was the confirmation that the Universal Monsters have indeed come into the NECA stable and that a range of 7 inch scale Ultimate figures are on their way. The line will launch in Summer 2021 and will celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Universal Monsters and particular the Boris Karloff Frankenstein movie of 1931.

The Black & White figure of Frankenstein's Monster will feature three head options, swap out hands and a pair of shackles. There are also daisy accessories.

Once Frankenstein's Monster was announced, NECA wasted no time in teasing the next Universal Monster in their plans with this image of The Mummy.

NECA Defenders of the Earth

The NECA Defenders of the Earth figures, as unveiled last year, are also on their way into stores - starting first at Walmart in the US as a timed exclusive before a general wider release. The first three figures have now had placeholders listed on the Walmart website with boxed images of Ming the Merciless, Flash Gordon and The Phantom.

Hasbro Power Rangers

This week saw the first Fan Friday livestream events from Hasbro in 2021 for their Power Rangers line. The event included news around the show itself as well as details from the collaboration with Super7. In the 6 inch Lightning Collection we got the full reveal of Wave 9 coming this Summer. It is made up of the In Space Black Ranger, S.P.D. Green Ranger, Lost Galaxy Blue Ranger and from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the Tenga Warrior

Todd McFarlane Batman

Todd McFarlane has imagined and designed his take on Batman as a figure in the McFarlane DC Multiverse line, and this figure has been released as a Walmart (US) Exclusive under the Gold Label format. It has now been revealed via an Amazon listing, that a general variant of this figure is on the way. The new figure will feature an alternative dark blue paint job and it will replace the goggles with a batarang accessory and the weapons will be tweaked.

Halo by Jazwares / Wicked Cool Toys

The next wave of the Jazwares / WCT 6 inch Halo Spartan Collection has been unveiled and will be made up of figures of Emile 239, Spartan Mk5, Jerome 092 and Spartan Gungnir. The figures should be arriving by the end of February 2021.

Jazwares Fortnite

There was also a reveal, of sorts, of the next Jazwares 6 inch Fortnite Legendary Series Wave with an Amazon listing for Recruit (Jonesy) and a full gallery of images. The blurb for the figure also confirmed incoming figures of Midas and Dark Voyager. An image of Midas has leaked but we have chosen not to show this as it was clearly marked as not for release. As is the way with Jazwares, now that these are listed on Amazon they should begin to arrive in stores within the next few weeks.

"Best of" The Muppets by Diamond Select

We got a look at the packaging for the "Best of" Muppets series from Diamond Select. The first two waves are being released together in February 2021 and like the recent Lord of the Rings reveal, the Muppets will feature a new format of window box packaging as opposed to the larger blister card used by Select figures for many years.

Super7 Turtles

Super7 announced a re-issue this week of their first Series of Ultimates Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures. This re-run will include variant colours on the weapons racks to differentiate it from the first release.

Marvel Legends Best of the MCU

The 2020/2021 Best of MCU wave of Marvel Legends figures first showed up at Taiwanese distributor Damned Toys in Summer 2020. The wave has now started to show up on Aliexpress alongside some clearer images of the boxes and figure contents. As yet nothing has been confirmed for a release in Europe. The wave features re-released figures, but includes a tweaked Black Widow figure which combines parts from previous releases.

This Weeks Action Figure Reviews...

About Me : As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I. Joe (Action Force) and M.A.S.K. while also dabbling in He-Man, Transformers and Ghostbusters. Roll forward and I am now reliving that Youth with the action figures of today and am a collector and fan of the larger 6-8 inch figures from my favourite movie and TV licences - including the ones mentioned above, but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Who and the Aliens. I launched The Mephitsu Archives in 2015 with a view of creating a UK focused site or these figures where fans can pick up the latest action figure news, read reviews and get information on where to buy their figures and what is currently on store shelves. I hope I am delivering that to you guys...
