Happy #SatTOYday everyone!
It is definitely a bumper issue this week with news from right across the spectrum. It was Hasbro's first fan event of 2021 this week, with a number of new Star Wars reveals. Super7 went one better with an entire week of reveals and teases including a very very large Thundertank and new licences to look forward to in 2021 and into 2022.
There were new images released from Diamond, Medicom and NECA for new 2021 releases including Lord of the Rings from Diamond, The Boys from Medicom and Predator from NECA. New announcements included a John Constantine from Mezco, a new Fortnite 'oversize' release from Jazwares, and a Godzilla vs Kong product from SH Monsterarts.
I am still very slow off the mark for reviews in 2021, and managed just one this week with the Doctor Who B&M Exclusive Set, Companions of the Third & Fourth Doctor.
Hasbro Star Wars
The first Hasbro Fan Event livestream of 2021 took place on Friday the 29th of January and focused on this years celebration of 50 years of Lucasfilm.
Hasbro will be celebrating this 50th anniversary with a number of Star Wars releases. We start with a wave of figures from the Sequel Trilogy - each packed on 1999 era Phantom Menace Card backs. All the figures included are repacks, including the brand new Jar Jar Binks deluxe release. The other figures will be Count Dooku, Mace Windu and a new version of Qui-Gon Jinn with retooled head and updated face print apps. They will be a Spring 2021 release.
A second line of figures will feature repacked figures, repainted in classic Kenner styling and packed on Vintage era cardbacks - similar to how Hasbro released 4-LOM and Zuckuss last year. This line will include A New Hope Obi-Wan Kenobi, Greedo and a Jawa. These will be Amazon exclusives in the US and UK and pre-orders are now up for release in May (although the UK pre-orders are listing these arriving between March and May.
The main Black Series line was waiting on the final figure to be confirmed for Wave 4 of the new Galaxy Collection, and that figure has been confirmed as a new trooper, the Elite Squad Clonetrooper from Bad Batch. He rounds off the 5 figure wave alongside Hunter, Crosshairs, Bo-Katan and Asajj Ventress. The wave is a Spring 2021 release.
Looking further ahead, the Star Wars team are going to start to provide us with 'pipeline' information about other figures in development for the Black Series and Vintage Collection. Currently in the pipeline for the Black Series for late 2021 and into 2020 are Tech from the Bad Batch, Zero and Koska Reeves from The Mandalorian, Aurra Sing from The Phantom Menace and General Lando Calrissian from Return of the Jedi.
There were also Vintage 'pipeline' reveals with 3.75 inch figures in development for IG-11 from the Mandalorian and Lando Calrissian from The Empire Strikes Back.
There were Vintage Collection reveals too, with new figures incoming from The Clone Wars Season 7, The Siege of Mandalore, with Ahsoka Tano and Darth Maul.
And as part of the Lucasfilm Film 50th Anniversary we have new figures from The Return of the Jedi as Hasbro continue to try and bring us all of the original 96 Kenner figures in the new Vintage Collection. The AT-ST Driver, Paploo and Princess Leia Endor will be US Walmart Exclusives.
Hasbro GI Joe
It was also clarified this week that the running change to Wave 1 of the GI Joe Classified Series for 2021 not only include redeco of paint for Scarlett and Roadblock, but that Duke would also have some paint updates vs the original release (new versions are shown on the left in the images below).
Super7 Week of Reveals
Super7 have been holding a full week's worth of teases and reveals which started with a bang and this image of a 7 inch scale Thundertank from their Ultimates line of Thundercats figures.
As the week went on we received more details on the Thundertank including dimensions which are an impressive 27 inches long and 17 inches wide. The vehicle can seat up to 6 Thundercat Ultimates figures and is priced at $450. Super7 will open the preorders on 2nd of February and hold this open until the 2nd of April - with a payment plan available. The items itself will ship in Q1 of 2022.
Reveal number two had been teased the previous week, with the Ultimates 7 inch scale Papa Emeritus I from Swedish Rock band Ghost. The figure will come with two head options, each with a different Mitre. There are also two sets of robes and two Thuribles for Papa Emeritus I to hold as well as a microphone and stand accessory. The figure pre-order is open until the 26th of February 2021 and the item itself will ship in Winter.
There were new licence reveals too in the Super 7 Ultimates 7 inch scale. The first was the collaboration between Super7 and Toho International to produce Godzilla action figures. The first releases will be 3.75 inch Re:Action figures, with 7 inch Ultimates coming in 2022.
Super7 have also teamed up with Hasbro to produce Re:Action and Ultimates from key Hasbro properties. The Power Rangers line will arrive later in 2021 with a first wave featuring the Yellow Ranger, Green Ranger, Goldar, Tyrannosaurus DinoZord, and Putty Patroller.
Another new licence in partnership with Hasbro was Transformers, with Super7 granted a licence from Hasbro to bring us 7 inch Transformers Ultimates figures as well as the Re:Action figures already on the market. The first wave has been unveiled for Autumn 2021 release and is made up of 7 inch figures of Optimus Prime, Banzai-Tron, Bombshell and Starcream's Ghost.
Diamond Select Lord of the Rings
Diamond shared new images of their Gimli and Legolas figures, the first Series in their new Lord of the Rings line. The figures are now delayed until March 2021 and look to have undergone some changes since the pre-order images were released - particularly a downgrade to a single joint elbow which will impede Legolas in particular.
Nightmare Before Christmas
Diamond also released details for more Nightmare Before Christmas Select figures this week. Series 10 will arrive in late June and will feature Mr Hyde & Corpse Dad, Corpse Mum & Duck Gift and Mrs Claus & Choir Elf. There is also a Previews exclusive 2-pack of The Creature and Cyclops who will also be a Summer 2021 release.
The new oversize line of bigger stature Fortnite figures from Jazwares is getting another addition in the shape of Kit, complete with his robotic body that itself converts down into a vehicle mode. Kit will come with two weapons and dual harvesting tools. Kit himself is a removable figure.
While both figures had ben announced, this week saw the promotional images and order details unveiled by Medicom for their next two MAFEX releases, scheduled for late 2021 releases.
Doctor Strange, from Avengers Infinity War, will feature two head options as well as alternative hands and a soft goods cape. He will also include two versions of the Eye of Agamotto as well as a number of magic FX pieces - including the "thousand arms" which attach to the back of the figure. Doctor Strange is scheduled for release in November 2021 with pre-orders open now.
Homelander, from The Boys, will come with three head options, swap out hands, an alternative chest piece and soft goods cloak. He too is listed as a November 2021 release.
SH Monsterarts Godzilla vs Kong
Not only did the trailer hit this week for Godzilla vs Kong, we also had two new SH Monsterarts figures from the movie announced by Bandai. Godzilla will stand the taller of the two at 6.3 inches, while Kong is a little shorter at 5.7 inches. Kong will feature two head options, alternative hands and his axe weapon as seen in the trailer. Both figures are down as a May 2021 release in the Far East, with Bluefin quoting June 2021 for the US and Western markets.
A brand new DC comics figure of John Constantine from Mezco was announced this week in their One:12 Collective series. The figure will be an Autumn 2021 release and features four head options, a raft of hands, magic FX pieces and weaponry including a chainsaw, twin blade and Moonblade. John also comes with his lighter and removable coat and tie for alternative looks.
The NECA team this week showed off a new gallery of promotional images for the Ultimate Assassin Predator we saw last year at Toy Fair. The repaint of the original figure from 2018 movie, The Predator, will include two heads and weapons. He will initially be a timed exclusive to Walmart, and then move to a general release.
Another figure heading to Walmart first as a timed exclusive is the next Ultimate Back to the Future figure, the Audition Marty McFly. This set is a tweak from the original figure (no bodywarmer) and also includes a faded photo of Marty's family, a save the Clock Tower flyer and a faded hand as Marty disappears from time - although as pointed out by fans, Marty is wearing his 1950's gear in the scenes where this happens.
NECA ended the week with a very exciting tease courtesy of an updated social media profile picture. The image of a black and white classic Frankenstein could herald the arrival of the Universal Monsters into the NECA line(s).
This Weeks Action Figure Reviews...
About Me : As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I. Joe (Action Force) and M.A.S.K. while also dabbling in He-Man, Transformers and Ghostbusters. Roll forward and I am now reliving that Youth with the action figures of today and am a collector and fan of the larger 6-8 inch figures from my favourite movie and TV licences - including the ones mentioned above, but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Who and the Aliens. I launched The Mephitsu Archives in 2015 with a view of creating a UK focused site or these figures where fans can pick up the latest action figure news, read reviews and get information on where to buy their figures and what is currently on store shelves. I hope I am delivering that to you guys...
