Happy #SatTOYday everyone!
This week was dominated by NECA's reveals of the four sets that would have been their 2020 SDCC Exclusives. We have an odd Turtles choice, a wonderful looking Predator, an obscure Gremlin and a Glow in the Dark Alien.
Hasbro also had a busy week with a number of new Marvel Legends reveals and two new Power Rangers Exclusives. They also opened a new HasLab project, the first for Marvel, with an enormous 26 inch Sentinel figure. In other news we had a virtual presentation event from Tamashii Nations with a few new SH Figuarts unveiled, and Kaiyodo revealed their new Revoltech Cable figure.
NECA Ultimate City Demon (SDCC 2020)
NECA's Predator exclusive will be a new Ultimate figure of the City Demon. The set contains the Ultimate City Hunter, now cast in a translucent plastic with lightning accents - as seen in the 1987 movie as he climbs the buildings in Los Angeles. The set even includes lighting in the box itself to flash like the lightning storm in the movie.
NECA Glow in the Dark Big Chap Alien
The Alien Exclusive for 2020 is a new glow in the dark version of their Ultimate Big Chap Alien figure, complete with glow in the dark Egg, Facehugger and Chestburster. Even the box gets the glow in the dark treatment with the 1979 movie poster artwork also glowing when the lights go out.
NECA Unofficial Games Gremlin
The Gremlins SDCC Exclusive was leaked last week via Walmart, and was officially confirmed this week with the details of the set which is based on the 1984 advertising campaign of the movie as it tied itself in, unofficially, with the Olympic Games held in the USA. The set features Ultimate Stripe with soft goods swimming trunks, snorkel, flippers and Olympic Torch.
NECA Turtles on Tour
The Exclusive Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Musical Mutagen Tour set from NECA is based on a live stage musical event that ran in 1990 featuring the movie turles in conjunction with Pizza Hut. While NECA don't seem to have the rights to the logo for the event (Coming out of their Shells Tour) they have imitated the styling for the four Turtles and provided each with appropriate musical instruments as well as varying mask options and soft goods denim jackets, complete with the tour logo on the reverse.
We started the week with Marvel Monday, a relatively new concept where new Marvel Legends products are revealed on the first Monday of each new month. For July it was the reveal of a new Deluxe Toxin figure - arriving in November 2020 via the Fan Channel and via Hasbro Pulse in the US and Canada
But there was more.... Fan Friday was also Marvel Legends focused with the first ever Marvel HasLab project announced as an enormous 26 inch tall Sentinel figure from X-Men : Days of Future Past. The set includes a flexible tentacle and an exclusive figure of Bastion who comes with an alternative Sentinel Prime Head.
The HasLab project requires 6000 backers to make it to production, but is only currently open to US and Canadian collectors via Hasbro Pulse / HasLab.
Power Rangers Reveals
Hasbro were also revealing Power Rangers Exclusive this week with two new sets releasing on the 1st of August and exclusive to Amazon.
The SPD Omega Ranger and Uniforce Cycle introduces the first vehicle into the range.
We also have a multipack of the Psycho Rangers, with 5 of them presented in a new Amazon box set. The Blue and Red Rangers are repacks, while the Black, Pink and Yellow are now to the range. Each figure includes a weapon, alternative hands and FX pieces.
Tamashii Nations Features 2020
Tamashii Nations held their Features Event online this year due to the Covid 19 pandemic, and within the displays revealed a number of new figures in their various movie properties.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe was the best represented franchise, with a full display of the new Iron-Man figures and a second display of figures from the Endgame Final Battle. New figures revealed were a Final Battle Thanos, Final Battle Iron-Man, Final Battle Scarlet Witch and a Battle on Titan Doctor Strange. Other reveals included a Mk7 Iron-Man from Avengers and what looks to be a new Falcon.
Star Wars was limited to a single plain display of figures from The Mandalorian. While the Imperial Remnant Stormtrooper and Biker Scout with Bike were on display, neither had a release date and were listed as "display only". The only DC movie figure was a lone Wonder Woman 1984 figure.
Kaiyodo Revoltech Cable
The Revoltech Cable from Kaiyodo was first shown at the Winter Wonder Festival in Japan in early 2020 as an unpainted prototype. The full colour glam shots have now been released to show the figure will be well armed with two large blaster type weapons as well as a pair of hand guns. There are two head options as well as alternative hands and FX clip on parts.
Jazwares AEW at Smyths
UK fans of AEW will be pleased to see that Smyths Toy Superstores will be stocking the new AEW 6 inch action figures from Jazwares this September.
This Weeks Action Figure Reviews...
About Me : As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I. Joe (Action Force) and M.A.S.K. while also dabbling in He-Man, Transformers and Ghostbusters. Roll forward and I am now reliving that Youth with the action figures of today and am a collector and fan of the larger 6-8 inch figures from my favourite movie and TV licences - including the ones mentioned above, but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Who and the Aliens. I launched The Mephitsu Archives in 2015 with a view of creating a UK focused site or these figures where fans can pick up the latest action figure news, read reviews and get information on where to buy their figures and what is currently on store shelves. I hope I am delivering that to you guys...
