SatTOYday Roundup : Issue 129

Happy #SatTOYday everyone!

A full on week this week, and interestingly not dominated by Hasbro. Diamond Select definatey led on volume of reveals as they continued unveiling what would have been their SDCC 2020 exclusives. Mezco showed off a glorious new 1978 Superman, while McFarlane had a very impressive 4 figure line up for the DC Multiverse range based on Dark Night Metal.

While we still had some NECA reveals courtesy of a Wholesaler, NECA had some official press releases for us this week and a complete surprise in the shape of a very famous Ape.

Diamond Select Toys : SDCC Exclusives

San Diego Comic Con 2020 is cancelled due to the current global pandemic, but will go ahead as a virtual convention for all to attend. Exclusives made for the show will now find alternative routes to market - and for Diamond Select that will be via their Previews PX catalogue and distribution into independent comic book stores and retailers. They started showing off their SDCC exclusives last week and continued into this week with some more items.

Up first was a variant version of their 7 inch Tron figure. This exclusive is the VHS reveal, and is painted like the Tron pictured on the original VHS cover. It even comes in a VHS cassette box package and glows under black light.

Fans of Nightmare Before Christmas will be looking forward to the Oogie's Lair box set from Diamond. The set includes Oogie Boogie, Jack Skellington, Zero and Santa Claus, each of them with special glow in the dark paint jobs. The box then includes a built in dark light to show off the figures and their glowing decoration.

The final SDCC 2020 reveal of the week from Diamond is a new 5 figure box set from the Muppets. The Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem features the full Electric Mayhem band line up with figures of Dr Teeth, Zoot, Animal, Floyd Pepper and Janice. The set is packed in a theatre inspired multi levelled box.

Mezco One:12 Collective Superman 1978

Mezco unveiled their exclusive 1978 Superman this week, taken from the Superman movie and as immortalised by Christopher Reeve. The set included two heads, alternative hands, kryptonite shards and neck chain - and a light up Fortress of Solitude base piece.

It is exclusive to Mezco so wont be on offer at any other retailers. The good news is that the Mezco store deliver internationally and calculate the appropriate tax rates in advance.

McFarlane Dark Night Metal

McFarlen unveiled four more figures for their 7 inch DC Multiverse line this week, all based on the recent Dark Night Metal comic book storyline for Batman. Each figure is an alternative version of Batman including Dawnbreaker, Devastator, Murder Machine and the Grim Knight.

NECA Godzilla

More NECA items have shown up this week via overseas wholesalers, with no official word from NECA on their existence. Two new Godzilla figures were listed on the site of a Mexican wholesale, Distrito Max.

The first uses the existing Godzilla from the 2003 movie Tokyo SOS. This new variant adds some different paint apps to replicate Godzilla after his battle with Kiryu and Kiryu's Hyper Blast. The second uses the sculpt from the 1989 vs Biollante movie and again adds paint variances, this time to represent Godzilla after being covered in Biollante bile. Both figures are listed as August/September releases.

NECA Turtles

NECA did have some official reveals this week, starting with these boxed images of their 1990 movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - now repacked into 2-packs. This re-release of the figures will give collectors another chance to add Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo to their collection. In the US they will be a Walmart exclusive - as yet we are unclear if these will come to the UK.

NECA King Kong

NECA surprised many this week with a reveal of this glorious King Kong figure in their Kaiju line. The 8 inch Kong is inspired by his previous movie appearances - although is not particularly licenced to any movie. He will include two head options as well as an alternative pair of hands

NECA Ace Ventura

NECA also revealed their next addition to the Toony Classics line of 6 inch stylised action figures as Ace Ventura Pet Detective. Ace is depicted standing atop an alligator. He will come in the standard Toony blister packaging.

Hasbro Marvel Legends Best of X-Men

It wasn't just new NECA product being listed early by wholesalers, Australian Wholesaler Creative Wholesaler put up a listing for a new wave of Marvel Legends X-Men figures. The text indicates this is a Best Of wave with figures from previous waves re-packed into a new wave with an existing BAF reallocated amongst them. We await more details...

SH Figuarts "Birth of Iron-Man" Tony Stark

As we reported in Issue 127, SH Figuarts have a 4 figure line up planned for Iron-Man from the MCU over the coming months. We saw the Mk1 suit back in that issue, and this week the 2nd figure was revealed as a Birth of Iron-Man Tony Stark figure.

Tony comes in his business suit from the start of the 2008 movie, complete with glasses and mobile phone. The clever aspect of the set is the ability to swap his head and whole upper torso to create the Tony we see captured in the cave as he builds his Mk1 suit. The set even comes with an anvil, hammer, tongs and a Mk1 armour faceplate.

About Me : As a child of the 70's and 80's I grew up in a golden age for action figures and in my youth bought and sold myself through collections of Star Wars, G.I. Joe (Action Force) and M.A.S.K. while also dabbling in He-Man, Transformers and Ghostbusters. Roll forward and I am now reliving that Youth with the action figures of today and am a collector and fan of the larger 6-8 inch figures from my favourite movie and TV licences - including the ones mentioned above, but also the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Doctor Who and the Aliens. I launched The Mephitsu Archives in 2015 with a view of creating a UK focused site or these figures where fans can pick up the latest action figure news, read reviews and get information on where to buy their figures and what is currently on store shelves. I hope I am delivering that to you guys...
